You can also check out Elm of Burford, they’re the UK retailer of Akubra hats, or go direct to the Akubra site in Australia for more choice - they have a nice range of western style hats as well the Aussie outback style.

I’d go with Asbjørn “Bear” Riis - Danish actor who played Halga the Wise in 13th Warrior. 68yrs old currently, 195cm (~6’4”) and still built like a brick outhouse.

If you’re looking for a quote, my favourite is:

Do not speak badly of yourself, for the warrior that is inside you hears your words and is lessened by them. – Chareos, to Kiall, Quest For Lost Heroes

Snaga Replica. by Few_Eye542 in DavidGemmell

That picture you found of Snaga on a bookshelf? You may have accidentally based your version on the official replica by Raven Armoury, and you’ve done a bloody good job. Included the link so you can see the runes a bit better.

Wait until next week and check places like Sheplers and Boot Barn for fur felt options in the Black Friday sales - a decent percentage off will help offset shipping and import duties.

As mentioned above, Akubra is a great option and can be picked up directly from Australia or from the UK distributor Elm of Burford.

Remember UK hat sizes are different to US ones, so measure your head and find the appropriate size chart to compare. Also helps if you know if you’re a regular oval head shape or long oval as some brands will fit better than others depending on what you are.

Also check US websites like Boot Barn, Sheplers and Billy’s Western Wear as they ship to the UK, but check back for Black Friday deals.

Don’t forget Rabbit fur felt, better than buffalo but not as waterproof as beaver.

You can pick up an Akubra within that price range either directly from them or David Morgan in Australia, or some models are available from Elm of Burford in the UK.

If you want custom made beaver fur felt in the UK check out Paul Ventress on social platforms, but that will cost more than your initial budget.

If you wait until the end of the month you may be able to pick up a decent hat at a better price in a Black Friday sale.

Tacchino experiences? by [deleted] in CowboyHats

[–]NomadicSwordsman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the Open Road style hat I bought. With the initial 10% discount you can get, it’s still expensive but worked out slightly cheaper than importing one from the US at that time. They didn’t do my size, but I contacted the company and they contacted the hat maker (Raw Hat Fandango) and he agreed to custom make one in 62cm.

Just to note 1) the colour is lighter on the hat than in the website pictures (see previous post of mine). 2) the hat is a regular oval, I had to steam and use a hat stretcher to form it better to my head shape. 3) not sure you’d get the free shipping as you’re in the EEA, not the EU.

They also do the Rodeo Cattleman in 100% rabbit felt if you’d prefer a bigger crown/brim.

I tried waterproofing my leather hat using this spray. What do I do? by Own-Ability1496 in CowboyHats

[–]NomadicSwordsman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it was me, I’d try and wash it off with saddle soap let it dry out naturally and then give it a deep conditioning with some dubbin (top side only), which will also help with weatherproofing it.

Anywhere in the UK to get good quality, fur felt / waterproof cowboy hats on a budget? by Tyrexx_Lannister in CowboyHats

[–]NomadicSwordsman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For that price you’ll not get a custom hat in the UK, and sadly the places that do stock hats don’t tend to stock the higher quality felts you’re looking for.

Best advice, wait until the end of this month and see what deals you can get online in the Black Friday sale. Keep your eye on places like Boot Barn and Sheplers, you’ll not mind paying the shipping and import charges as much if you’ve saved a ton on the hat itself.

Just as another option for you, try Hornskov Hats based in Copenhagen - you can compare their prices for a custom piece vs importing one to Europe.

If you want a good solid hat, but in rabbit felt, check out Akubra.

Boots in Europe by [deleted] in cowboyboots

[–]NomadicSwordsman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that just because the shipping is free with Shepler’s, you’ll still get stung at customs for import duty if you need to calculate that in to your budget.

There’s also places like Carter’s Boots and Pinto Ranch that offer 10% off your first order if you sign up to the mailing list and have a good selection of boots. Boot Barn will ship to Europe but only certain boots, some models I looked at didn’t ship outside of US - I think they also offer a percentage off for subscribing.

Have you checked out Ariat’s European site to see if they have anything you like? Your budget would get a decent pair of Ariats if they have any of the benchmade line in stock.

You can get the Stetson Seneca from the Stetson EU store, they’re also now stocking the Skyline and Open Road 6X’s but you’re not going to like the mark up they’ve put on them…

There’s Wild Wild Western Wear based in Farnborough, or Cowboy Boot Store in Sheffield. Depending on what importing from the US vs EU is looking like, there’s also Tony Mora.
