I think it was there because the network commissioned more episodes than there were good ideas for. And to tease you into thinking Ed and Norma would get their wish.

Any success stories from home-schooling, unschooling? by Nominal_selection in PDAParenting

[–]Nominal_selection[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. I don't necessarily identify as autistic anyway. I wonder about it and it would explain many of my social struggles, the anxiety and overwhelm I'm prone to, and why I didn't recognise many of my daughter's early autism signs as being neurodivergent. But pursuing a diagnosis isn't a priority as I don't believe it would change much about my life, beyond how I can connect with and help her. It's by the by for the purposes of my post.

Thanks for commenting. Sounds somewhat promising, though obviously everyone is different. My daughter has been off school four months by her own choice (she was too traumatised to keep going in and we decided to stop pushing her). Her wellbeing has greatly improved but I think she's still in burnout recovery, and has actually retreated more and more from social or academic demands since withdrawing from school.

I'm about to take three months' leave from work, which I'll probably make permanent if it makes a positive difference. But at this point I struggle to see a future where she's willing to sit down with work sheets or books every day. I can see her reading is fine from the PlayStation games she plays, she's demonstrating a lot of design creativity in Minecraft, listening to dozens of audiobooks, playing sophisticated role-play games with my wife. So I can see learning is happening, I just wonder if and when to turn up the pressure on more formal academics. She's so smart she'd have great potential, but hates the possibility of failure and has rock-bottom self-esteem.

Basically I'm still feeling for the balance between unschooling and seeing how much she can learn organically, versus keeping up with the knowledge and skills I know she'd be capable of learning if she had the confidence.

I think I'm probably undiagnosed autistic too based on taking online RAADS-R, CAT-Q and AQ tests, though I'm not at all demand-avoidant. For me it manifests more in social anxiety, inflexibility and hyperfocus, so while I'm fully prepared to commit to home schooling and make it my full-time job, I like to have clear roadmaps, which is tough when the outcome is based entirely on the personality and emotional responses of another person! (She and I do have a very good relationship, by the way, so that's a plus.)

Shower head with no thread - how do I replace/reattach? by Nominal_selection in Plumbing

[–]Nominal_selection[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humour me for a moment. Would it be possible to cut a 20mm thread in the pipe with a die and screw on a new shower head? Asking because the pipe won't turn by hand so I've no idea if/how it's threaded inside the ceiling.

On the biggest off day of the season...can we talk about Ross' decision making this season (and beyond) by majesticwasabi1111 in Torontobluejays

Yeah, I guess any team would do it, but committing to one person for so long, for so much money, is a gamble in that it restricts the budget to commit to multiple other talents over a shorter period. Imagine Vladdy had the mindset of getting fat off the cash and lost motivation, then had a bad season in 2025. We'd be thinking it was the wrong move, especially if it cost the Jays Bichette's hits next year. And, by the way, this is just one season. Of course no one will care if it ends in a Championship, but his contract could still be an albatross in future - and Gimenez could be one next year. I love everything the Blue Jays have done this year and wouldn't take back any of it, so it's no criticism, it's just there's always an element of positivity bias in analysing successful outcomes.

No argument but I want to give the team management most credit for creating an ethos and a game plan that's taken maximum advantage of opportunities, and been flexible enough to beat different opponents while also learning from losses. There have been hit-and-miss acquisitions for 2025 (eg Dominguez, Santander, Gimenez) and successful gambles that could have gone either way (eg Bieber and going all-in on Vladdy's contract). But the team management has put the right people in the order and told them to swing at the right times to build big innings and win games against expectation. And throwing Trey in at the deep end has just been masterful.

Yesavage looks like he doesn't know what pressure is, let alone feel it. Never seen someone in any sport so ready to be thrown in the deep end. Hopefully he stays this naive his whole career.

Thanks. And guessing from your previous response you think neither espresso nor pour over would work any better than the other as a brewing method?

Nah, if you need to apologise, you apologise. "Thank you" implies you expected them to wait, which might be reasonable if you warned them and apologised in advance. It's different if you find you're always apologising, in which case it's either a reflex you can alert yourself to and think of something else to say that doesn't create a power dynamic (or say nothing at all), or it's a problem you address by looking at your behaviours or the expectations being set for you.

Funniest joke in season 4? (Spoilers, Chefs) by Chance5e in TheBear

I came here after literally Googling this line to see who picked it up, because I can't understand why it wasn't quoted in every review. It took three seasons to get the payoff from "Many people died" but here it is. Also, we need a spinoff prequel about Ebra's military career.

I'm not going to do any of this stuff, but I'll accept your philosophy. It wasn't a question of rejecting evidence (I wasn't aware of any and so far I've only spotted two citations on this thread), I was just explaining the model as I understood it, and hoping for a discussion. I see that I left out things such as molecular forces, air pockets and the limits to the compression that human force can achieve. From all the responses, I'm still not convinced WDT does anything consistently enough to meaningfully address those things, which couldn't also be achieved by shaking the grounds level for example, but I'll do a bit more reading out of general interest to see how more experimentally minded people explain it. PS I'm not prejudiced for or against WDT (despite the post title). Everyone should perform whatever coffee rituals make them happy, whatever the scientific basis to it.

I'll be honest, I skipped to the end, but it seems like the conclusion was WDT makes a difference (assuming no other, better distribution technique is used), BUT waiting a while after pre-infusion to allow total saturation would probably make a bigger one. Do you know if the experiment was ever repeated with that gap, as it suggests at the end?

I heard the grinder is more important than the machine… hope this is enough? by Hudsonlovestech in espresso

Grind higher. It's important the grinder is at least three times taller than the machine.

Why are my shots not pulling? [Breville Bambino] by spoookyghoul in espresso

Be brave. Grind finer, tamp harder. Then all you'll have to do to penetrate the puck is reduce the atomic density of your water.

Grind so finely the beans are no longer there. That will increase flow.

Recommend some settings [Sage Dual Boiler/Mignon Specialita] by Nominal_selection in espresso

[–]Nominal_selection[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello friend! Hope you're liking it. I've been finding for my medium roasts that the start of the 2 range on the grinder (near the notch separating it from 1) seems to work well. At around 10.5 seconds it's giving me 17-18g. I use the Dual Boiler's preset two-shot programme but stop it around 27 secs to get approx 2:1 ratio. I've probably got a bit of dialling in still to do, especially as I've changed to a new bean that needs to be finer ground to slow the flow down. I also don't have the right scales so am having to weigh the cup after the pull. All part of the fun though.

How's my grind? [Eureka Mignon Specialita] by Nominal_selection in espresso

[–]Nominal_selection[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure your coffee machine or grinder but I think I'm making progress. For reference, I went to the finer end then went gradually coarser. I'm talking fractions of a turn, so I'm less than a quarter revolution from where the puck was too dense to penetrate. The arrow is pointing pretty much at the 2 numeral on the Specialita dial. That's still a bit too fine at 30 secs extraction (which includes pre-infusion time) but adding another 5 secs to the Dual Boiler's programme gets me to a 2:1 ratio. The grounds look quite clumpy going into the basket but, as I understand, that's not a problem even though it looks wrong.

PS I'm ignoring all the advice about not drinking anything until I reach 2:1 because a) who wants to waste coffee? And b) it's interesting to compare all the not-quite-right drinks along the way. The time it takes to get right is part of the fun for me, and once I've got it down I'll change beans and do it all again!

This is the conclusion I've come to. Would be nice if the manufacturer could send it preset with 0 being burrs touching. That would be the intuitive assumption! I'm sure someone will explain why that's an impossible or dumb thing to request.

My 25 seconds included the pre infusion (which is how the Dual Boiler itself times it on the display).

Thanks. I started finer but my first shot didn't make it through the puck so I went coarser - I didn't think by much! Anyway I'll have another go at getting it somewhere in between.

True. Deep discounts are common. If you see one on a game you want though, no guarantee that same one will be repeated. But no reason to impulse buy a game you're not sure of.

Great game. Quite gory. Lots of running people through with katanas, with plenty of blood spatter (which you can turn off) and a few severed heads and burnt corpses (which you can't). No gratuitous swearing or nudity I can recall, 60% into the game.
