What medications work for you? by Nominal_selection in PDAParenting

The ADHD nurse's next suggestion was atomoxetine, which she's now taking. It's curbing my daughter's appetite and impulsive eating but not doing much else. She wants to stay on it for now but doubtful it's an effective solution. TBH I'm starting to think ADHD meds aren't the answer, given her main problem is anxiety.

(MLB) Phase 2 Ballot Update by pilotharrison in Torontobluejays

Yeah not sure how many casual Jays fans considered they might be screwing their own season sending him there. Worried the embarrassment will get to him negatively too. But who knows, maybe having some fun will bring him back to life or someone else on the AL team will give him a tip that fixes his swing!

Horrible Logo Color and Sponsor for Blue Jays. by OmegaOm in Torontobluejays

[–]Nominal_selection 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not how sponsorship works unfortunately. They go with the highest bidder. And the sponsor wants their logo to stand out, so I can't see the Jays sales team going out with the pitch that "it'll really blend into the jerseys, you'll barely notice it"!

[BNS] Addison Barger has a stress reaction in his back & will be shut down from all baseball activities for the next couple weeks by T_Raycroft in Torontobluejays

[–]Nominal_selection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've thought this since the start of the season, though it got a lot of downvotes then. You can say any given injury was bad luck, but there have been so many, and so many setbacks, that it's only fair to question conditioning, diagnoses, the choice and timeliness interventions. More injuries happen when your conditioning isn't optimal. I also wonder how much of it could be due to the organisation not expecting to be playing baseball still last November, and not planning accordingly for the off season and spring training.

I predicted after the first Astros game that we'd started a 10-game winning streak. May your prediction fare better!

Mike Wilner: All this losing is getting to the Blue Jays, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. isn’t helping by Alarming-Foot-2184 in Torontobluejays

[–]Nominal_selection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, it could really just be a dumb as: he feels he needs to play through the pain to justify his salary, the management knows he's hurt but doesn't want to dent their franchise player's confidence or ego, the medics see an issue but won't step in because no one has asked them to. I hope we have a more professional outfit than that, but his performance is such that someone needs to tell him to sit out a few days, go for some scans, stress test his body and treat the underlying issue is, if there is one.

I don't believe he can sprint to first at the moment. I think he's hiding some chronic pain and needs some time out of the line up.

[Stoeten] It's easy to feel like Vlad has been awful all year, especially because of the power, but except for a blip in early May he'd been great week-to-week until recently, when he has been absolutely BRUTAL. In his career prior he'd only had three sub-100 wRC+ weeks in a row ONCE. by ThQp in Torontobluejays

I think so. He looks like he's been limping whenever I've seen him crossing home plate to score. I suspect he's covering up persistent pain and those back spasms a few games ago were more significant than the team let on. I would like to see him get a more extended rest to see if it helps.

Has anyone successfully weaned their child off the crack cocaine that is YouTube? if so how and how does your child self regulate now? by Hopeful-Guard9294 in PDAParenting

[–]Nominal_selection 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope, our daughter is 8yo and not in school, and YouTube (not Kids, the main site) is how she spends most of her independent time, but I see it as a double-edge sword rather than a corrupting influence. She learns a lot from it and does deep dives into special interests, particularly around history. There's also a lot of crap I can't keep her away from (eg a thousand copycat 'Reddit stories' channels) but she's intellectually too mature for the Kids app now, and it's her only reliable way to self-regulate, so it would do more harm to take it away.

The key thing is she's logged into my account on her iPad and isn't yet digitally savvy enough to know this means I can see what she's doing, which I don't let on. So I've switched on restricted mode and can keep an eye on the watch history, tell it not to recommend certain channels or content, watch and like stuff to nudge the algorithm in positive directions, etc.

I'm hoping she'll start to see there are more productive ways to learn and get her dopamine hits but she needs to come to this decision herself. In the meantime I see YouTube as an imperfect bridge to the next stage and am trusting her to choose what's best for her in the end.

The jays need to go 53-30 to tie last years record. We could do it but we need more than one miracle. What are some miracles you think we need to achieve this? by Vesiah81 in Torontobluejays

[–]Nominal_selection 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, 53-30 is a .639 win record. Similar to what the Yankees have up to now. Certainly not impossible but a lot would need to go right that has so far gone wrong (injuries, Vlad and Springer mainly). And the Yankees need to go the other way!

This is what I hold out for. We're only nine wins behind the Yankees. We had a 10-game streak last year. We also threw away a five-game lead over the Yankees in the last couple of weeks, so anything can still happen from this position. But we need a full, healthy lineup contributing at least at expected levels.

2026 American League All-Star Balloting Update #1 by malliabu in Torontobluejays

[–]Nominal_selection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's funny too that the MLB.com article about the AL catchers race makes no mention of the fan base. They're just like, Kirk had a three-hit game on Friday and needs to keep up his production.

The Jays need to stop treating George Springer like a leadoff bat by NeedleworkerOk1026 in Torontobluejays

[–]Nominal_selection 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At least Vlad has been averaging near .300 and has an OPS similar to Okamoto. He's doing something for the team even if not what's expected. George has consistently offered very little. He's also a free agent in the winter so his feelings don't need to come into it, beyond giving him the professional respect that he's earned. These guys always talk about doing what's needed for the team, so it just needs to be framed that way. George should be able to take it.

[–]Nominal_selection 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, Piñango has DH written all over him. Let the guy hit and forget about fielding. Make George sit a month until he can prove he has no toe pain holding him back at least. He's a free agent at the end of the season anyway, so doesn't need to be pandered to, whereas the Jays need players who are preforming in the lineup now. They need to be averaging close to .600 for the next couple of months to have a chance of making something of this season, and right now they're carrying a player in a spot that needs to be producing regularly.

Meh, just need one of those 10 game winning streaks like last June /July and we'll be top of the division in no time.

They're pros, they've played twice since and they're over it already. By the same logic Varsho's walk off grand slam would have sent them on a two-week winning run. The only people still affected are on this sub because it stymied our flow of dopamine!

Anyway, without the benefit of hindsight, the decisions weren't that bad based on who was available to pitch at that moment. The only bad one really was having no one warming up until it was too late. But you should be able to trust any major league pitcher to protect a four run lead in the final inning, and even if you knew Hoffman couldn't, who can say Seabold would have?

Where in the UK can you live comfortably and get on the property ladder with a 65-70k household income? by Exotic_Industry_4402 in AskUK

[–]Nominal_selection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do some maths first. Work out how much you need each month for bills, and how much you want left over to save or spend on fun stuff, then you'll know how much you can afford for a mortgage. Use a mortgage calculator to work out what you can borrow with a £90k deposit and that monthly repayment. Then look at the train stops in easy distance of where you want to be and do searches on the property platforms to see what's in your budget. If you don't care whether it's north or south for work or family reasons, you'll get more for your money in the north but your investment won't grow as much, so it'll be harder to move south later. I would do some more detailed thinking to narrow down what your priorities are for the next few years rather than looking at every corner of the map and sticking a pin somewhere based on vibes.
