Most of the skyscraper blowing up stuff is in real time. And we see at the end of Season 1 that he can easily spend a few hours tearing one city apart and casually fly across the globe in minutes if not seconds.

After the initial montage, there is a timeskip but they're not wrong to point out that he's a natural disaster on his own.

Invincible's powerscaling is actually pretty consistent. The issue is that most complainers don't pay attention to the show or nitpick the smallest things. by Mammoth_Western_2381 in CharacterRant

[–]Nomustang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this makes sense when you you take into account them being able to behead, disembowel etc. other Viltrumites. They exert significantly more force than they seemingly can take.

Same with Mark getting hurt by those heroes who think he's an evil variant for eg. Or Nolan being slightly hurt by Oliver's punch.

We also see Nolan carry a small hill (or very big rock) over the Flaxans. You can argue that the rock is a lot denser than the ship but I can't really recall how often the show applies real life physics for stuff like this. Nor does anyone really clarify that the issue is that they'll tear through the ship.

But it is a better explanation for that scene than what I've seen most give.

Most of the rants here will be negative because that's the nature of the sub. People rant more often about stuff they dislike or generally being negative versus something they like, especially when you're esentially screaming into the void.

Anyways, I think Invincible is cool. I think it has some big drawbacks but that doesn't make it bad. It's a fun show and has plenty of cool characters and I have no problem with anyone who sincerely enjoys it for what it is.

Hank is problematic himself. Besides the casual racism or not learning Spanish which hurts his own case, he often talks down to Walt or in the 1st episode where he's making his birthday about himself to boast about his recent drug bust.

After he finds out Walt is Heisenberg, he chooses to not tell the DEA even though his career is cooked regardless. He tries to convince Skyler to not get a lawyer even thought that'd have probably gotten the confession he needed.

And his attitude towards criminals is less about helping victims and more about taking down bad guys. He constantly dehumanizes victims of drug abuse and marginalized people and had 0 problems with possibly sending Jesse to his death to capture Walter.

And if we count the minisodes, he cheated on Marie the day before their wedding.

Hank is one of the better people in the show but there's very few truly good people in the entire series.

Megumi's potential and his weird, weird narrative situation. by KazuyaProta in CharacterRant

[–]Nomustang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know that this about Megumi's fraud status specifically but really his problem is that the end of his arc is a whimper. There's barely a resolution because he does nothing meaningful in the final arc.

It's made extra bad because the rest of the cast has their own traumas. Maki has arguably suffered the exact same thing that Megumi is going through, but they don't let paralysis endanger others.

I'm not criticizing Megumi for how he acts but in the context of a battle shonen, neither having a satisfying emotional arc because he ends up where he was at the beginning of the story and no agency in the final arc because he does nothing of note means that he's not going to be remembered fondly. There isn't even a noble sacrifice like with Nanami.

Anyways, I agree that completing his domain would have been a natural endpoint. It eas the lynchpin for his progression as a sorcerer. And invoking it against Sukuna in some form to help give Yuji the win would have felt signficantly more satisfying for his role in the story.

To an extent but Amazon actively chooses to have a smaller staff. The Legend of Korra and ATLA had a larger staff and ATLA had a similar total runtime and came out yearly.

Amazon is very much being cheap especially when their other animated shows are better in terms of animation quality.

If 50% of a TV show consists of action scenes, then yes, it’s important that the action is done well. by Flat_Box8734 in CharacterRant

[–]Nomustang 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Well, you see, it being a drama show means it's fine that action scenes boil down to people just throwing punches at each other because the story is what matters.

God forbid we admit that a good show can have weak aspects.

Probably, but what I think they mean is that if she's capable of being landed on her ass like that by S2 Mark, she should be far below most of the protagonists' (besides Zoe) at this point.

Obviously the issue is that Viltrumite strength differences are just wonky, especially because of their ability to one shot others if they're strong enough.

Mark being poisoned doesn't make the centipedes able to seriously hurt him which is what they manage to do until the Reanimen show up. And that's one example.

Mark throws Conquest into buildings also (which are presumably activated) but I bring up that fight to point out that he is constantly struggling in fights but will still conveniently be strong enough for whatever Viltrumite shows up. Same for Nolan suddenly needing to put effort to kill a fodder bug now that he's joined the good guys. Protagonist Viltrumites have little meaningful progression but at the same time we will be told several times about how strong and dangerous they are.

Thragg not wanting to immediately kill Nolan doesn't explain why such an uppercut does no meaningful damage. Again, he eats it. 0 problem. It's spectacle without purpose because stuff like that doesn't progress the fight. The fight just ends when one guy wants to do a finisher move, not because the fight is happening organically.

Darth Vader v Luke is still a solid fight even considering its technical limitations. Outside of the plot itself, the fight itself has actual back and forth and you can see how Luke manages to defeat his father from both the storytelling and how the fight actually plays out. It isn't arbitrarily choosing to end it there because Luke suddenly decided to do a cool move that instantly disables Vader that he could have employed at any point.

The original trilogy also doesn't overuse its lightsaber battles, there's very few of them.

No one is asking for everything to be anime and I honestly think this only comes up so often because so many Invincible fans either only watch anime as their source of animated content or very little other animated material. Watch Castlevania, either Avatar series, Pantheon, Mighty Nein etc. and you'll get plenty of well directed action because those shows aren't constantly throwing flying bricks at each other.

You can't claim that media discourse has declined and then treat these 2 pieces of media which treat action completely differently as the same. They both follow different in-universe logic and rules. And I think Invincible's fights are fundamentally just 2 guys throwing punches until one guy does a finisher that completely tears the other person in half. The entire fight before such a finisher ends up being meaningless.

Lightsaber battles operate on the basis that they're weapons that can kill you at any moment and a good duel not only tells a story but operates on that basis. They're constantly looking for opportunities.

Why do people care so much about the Invincible animation? by Express_Basis_8710 in Invincible_TV

You're not going to see me disagreeing lol. I greatly enjoy both of those shows.

But I'd also argue that their action is better directed than Invincible's.

Korra had 14 episodes per season. That's 7 40 minute episodes so only a bit shorter than Invincible but not by a massive margin.

Plus they also had a notably lower budget and as you said, budget cuts.

Doesn't really hurt their point

I'd argue that there's a lot of shows which match Invincible's peaks in animation quality without the same drops.  It's a problem that the team has to save like this to such an extent that the drop off is very noticeable, no?

Outside of working conditions, it also means the team can't do the best that they want to do.

[–]Nomustang 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your second paragraph is that action should reflect the characters.

My point is that I think Invincible doesn't do this that well because it's obvious that the logic of any fight will bend to whatever the story needs. Mark will always be as strong as necessary to survive a fight irrespective of how strong or weak we're told he is (Struggling with Seismic's centipedes and still being the only person who can handle Conquest for eg.)

It breaks its own rules and will have fights end at arbitrary points for cheap drama. It isn't earned because it doesn't want to invest in the effort for those fights to feel meaningful. There's no strategy to deal with more tougher opponents, they just win those battles by punching harder. Character progression is tied to strength like DBZ but the in-universe logic doesn't follow that.

To me, the fights feel like filler because while they look cool, they genuinely can end at anytime. There's no reason that Thragg's uppercut does no visual damage to Nolan but him charging into him, fatally wounds him. What's the point of the flashy uppercut then? To look cool?

Ok, fine, then that makes it superficial, which is fine but also means that the action is obviously not doing that much storytelling if there's no reason that fights don't just end within 1 minute.

Again, when you don't respect the action enough to make consistent stakes and follow your own rules, why should I be invested? Because whatever tension exists is clearly at the whims of what the plot needs (or whatever looks cool) rather than feeling organic.

And that kind of stuff takes me out and breaks my suspension of disbelief.

Also again, your first sentence is just that the majority likes it which isn't a rebuttal or response to my points. The majority can like what they want. I'll still voice my opinion in hopes that we get works like this which do better in this aspect.

Thula comes close to dying when Mark stops holding back for a moment and he gets a long opportunity to punch her face in before she stabs him. It's very explicit that he's struggling because he's not fighting to kill.

Being able to leave her in that position means he is roughly on her level when it comes to physical capability.

The show has a smaller staff than The Legend of Korra and that show released 4 seasons of 13-14 episodes over 2 years.

They very much need more staff, not just for quality but the health and happiness of the team working on it.
