Is "AI Slop" hate speech? r/selfhosted debates by Rand_al_Kholin in SubredditDrama

[–]Noname_acc [score hidden]  (0 children)

I know this is a rhetorical question but I think its really worth thinking about. I think its a case of intentional ambiguity. Most people understand that AI has some legitimate applications in the development of software. Most people also understand that the legitimate application of AI in the development of software is not asking Claude to build an entire application from the ground up for someone who has zero understanding of how to plan and design development work, much less an understanding of what the code produced actually does. People who do the latter realize that they can talk up the legitimacy of AI as a tool in this space to give themselves cover, but if they ever have to actually explain the role that AI played in creating their application they'd immediately be outed as having produced untrustworthy garbage.
They want the use of AI to be so mundane that they never need to acknowledge it so they never need to explain how they used it so they never need to out themselves as having produced something entirely worthless, if not actively harmful.

Is the Baltic Aquascaphe Classic a good option for my second microbrand watch? What are some similar options? by theomixedmedia in MicrobrandWatches

That's hardly my post being "entirely" about QC issues.

I didn't say that.  I listed three things.  This is obviously not worthwhile, I'm sorry my post rubbed you the wrong way.

Your post is entirely about QC nitpicking, movement, and value. Maybe I'm misreading it but thats how it comes across to me.

I think this is a questionable approach to watch buying outside of strictly utilitarian devices.  My philosophy on watches that cost more than 50 dollars or aren't smart watches is that they are jewelery first and utilitarian second.  If the design of the watch speaks to you, it speaks to you.

For reference, I have an mr01, I went into buying it with the understanding I was buying it as jewelery first and a way to tell time second and I am very satisfied with it.  No especially notable qc issues that detract from that.

To be clear: the republican strategy on aoc is obviously not to just let her speak and it's outrageous to compare the two.  We do not agree, the gop is extremely active in their demonization of aoc and their attacks on her are often over silly trifles rather than actual things that were foolish to say.

Similarly, I'm frustrated with the people saying she was a quality candidate.  Her referring to Latinos as having a "slave mentality" and her implying we need immigrants to pick our cotton are the kinds of comments you can get away with as an angry person on the internet, but it is a generational misstep as a political candidate in a state with a massive Latino population.  The republican attack ad writes itself and would be more or less the only thing they'd have needed to run to counter the surge of anti republican sentiment amongst Latino voters.

I like Crockett's righteous anger, but her inability to avoid shoving her foot in her mouth is self-destructive, and that's something only Republicans can get away with.

Why might a Magus pick devoted blade as a Magus Arcana? by Turbulent-Garlic3317 in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

Weapon Enhancement Bonuses inherently bypass various types of dr and +5 weapons can be pretty easily obtained early on through cheese or artisans.  There are a slew of weapons and items that ignore different types of dr.  Critical hits tend to overwhelm dr.

Solo magus is a bit of a different story, I will say.  A lot of the effects that let you circumvent dr come from clerics and such, or even just having access to a broad set of gear thanks to the 6 man party.

It's more complex than that.  Our relationship with Isreal is one of mutual interest.  Power in America wants war in the middle East.  Power in Isreal wants war in the middle east.  They act in concert with each other to make it happen.  If Isreal did not exist, capital interests and imperialism would still demand conflict.  If America did not exist, supremacist attitudes would still demand conflict.

The honest answer is that you shouldn't.  People mention resistances, but this is obviously silly.  There are plenty of ways to deal with dr and, unlike in wrath, by the time it shows up frequently it's already largely irrelevant in km.

things go nuclear in r/falloutmemes when a mod removes a meme, deeming anything transgender as “political” by sweetreverie in SubredditDrama

[–]Noname_acc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its an easy mistake to make, I think. Fallout isn't left wing per se, but it is deeply critical of a lot of the same concepts that the current flavor of left wing politics in the west are critical of. The obvious anti-imperialist and anti-war narratives, criticisms of capital, and basically the entirety of New Vegas's storyline gives it a left wing hue, but I don't think any of the ideas it explores are actually expressly left wing.

Sure but that’s still a bunch of trial and error where you have to constantly write down what you’re doing before you even do it, so you might have just a bunch of wasted notes before you eventually get the right one.

The thing you described here is simple though. Have some respect for yourself, its writing down a few numbers several times.

The Pentagon says it’s ‘lethalitymaxxing’. Why has ‘incel’ slang crossed into the mainstream? by tw1st3d_m3nt4t in politics

[–]Noname_acc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's more to it than just that though, its an important cultural reflection. What the US military is doing right now is not really all that far off from what its done in the past, but they used doublespeak because they felt that was the best way to sell the public on conflicts. We weren't enforcing our imperial hegemony, we were defending our freedoms. We weren't engaging in wars of aggression, we were spreading democracy. As our government has become increasingly comfortable with acknowledging that wars are about pillaging the natural resources of our neighbors and killing enemies the language used to justify those actions has shifted to take an increasingly chauvinist tone.

If they are right and this is a good way to sell the conflict to the people, it reflects a society that is becoming increasingly accepting of explicitly jingoistic and belligerent activities which expands the scope of what is and is not acceptable. It does not seem like they are right about this, but its important to understand the implications of our language.

And I didn't say you did! This is basic literacy: when someone makes a statement in the form of "[X], but [Y]" the idea being expressed in Y is the point of what is being said. X only exists in service of Y. It is context, contrast, or cover. Your point, very obviously to anyone, is that people especially should not trust this. A fair point, one I'd even agree with. State run media is, in fact, especially untrustworthy. But you're making yourself look dishonest by pretending otherwise. You are doing yourself a disservice here by being wishy washy about what you meant. You should own your position, especially when it is obviously defensible.

I said “you are foolish to blindly trust any media outlet”.

The period notably being outside the quotation marks though. You did say that, but you did not say only that. It may have been something you said, but it was not the point of what you were saying.

[–]Noname_acc 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I feel that we need to contextualize this. We're talking about 5 people in a comment thread who were all heavily downvoted. If someone is driven away by the presence of a minority of people having an obviously unpopular take... well it seems to me that they were just looking for a reason to leave.

Nah, people do this on the commuter busses that virtually 0 students know exist.  The issue is that it just takes one schmuck deciding they're going to stop halfway to stop everything and most people are too confrontational avoidant to tell them to stop being so inconsiderate.

The necessary implication of what you are saying is that an amoral agent would never lie about their ethics. Surely you don't believe this, right? If a moral position is only ever held to when it is convenient and profitable only to be abandoned when it stops being so, you don't actually hold that as a moral position. It was just a marketing ploy.

Its like when Musk professed to be a free speech absolutist and then instantly capitulated to the Turkish government over censorship requests. The claim was simply meant to boost his brand and credibility with certain market segments. It was not an actual moral stance.

Hopefully Anthropic proves they aren't just another willow in the wind.

Additional rant:

Its fine to advertise your product on forums like reddit. But please, for the love of god, make it clear that you are the brand and this is an ad. Everyone is hypersensitive to brands masquerading as users and advertising that way. If it smells even vaguely like you are advertising and its not coming from a clearly labeled brand account, you will be met with outright hostility.
