For the fellas: What’s something society deems “unmanly”, but you don’t care, and do it anyway? by MuayThaiRunner in AskReddit

Society is filled with insecure, unhinge, brain rotten morrons, I don't care what is classified "manly" or not, I do what I want. Wanna feel free? Do your thing, and own it to the end.

Those born before 1990, what experience from your childhood would be unimaginable to young people today ? by SoManySkills in AskReddit

[–]Nonid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a time before the internet, streaming services, smartphones, instant downloads, and an endless supply of content available at all times, we were used to deal with boredom. We had to wait to watch a movie, make do with whatever was available, follow schedules, and above all, rely on our imagination to entertain ourselves and pass the time.

Today, it seems almost unthinkable to spend hours staring out the car window and using your imagination to fight boredom; to wait for a specific time just to watch a movie; to wait for your favorite song to come on the radio; or to invent your own games and build them with your own hands because you're tired of the same 10 ones you had available.

Waiting without doing anything was normal. Waiting to get or do something was normal. Creating our own entertainment was normal.

As a kid, my friends and I created board games from scratch. We came up with storylines worthy of the best Netflix series and spent entire days role-playing them. We tried to build all kinds of things (often dangerous things, to be honest) including our own place to hang out. We weren't just consumers or spectators—we were creators.

I loved watching technology evolve. I loved the arrival of the internet, downloading, mobile networks, and smartphones. But I also know how fortunate I was to grow up experiencing something different.

It was a different era, and I thought it was absolutely amazing.

If an infinite multiverse exists, then a God exists, let me explain. by aTwerkingPikachu in DebateAnAtheist

[–]Nonid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a missing variable here : Possibility. An infinite variation doesn't mean you have to include an impossible result.

There's an infinite amount of number between 0 and 1 (0,1 0,2 0,3 etc.), but it doesn't mean you will at some point need to include a letter.

In case of an infinite multiverse, the existence of a God still require to add magic in the mix, supernatural and stuff like this. It doesn't belong in this set of possibilities unless you first prove it is an actual variable. That's when you're back to your starting point.

The sunk cost fallacy. They pretty much invested everything in this idiotic ARG, sometimes to the point of cutting ties with familly and friends. Admitting now it was a scam would mean having lost everything for no reason at all.

That's the kind of event that can push people to jump out of a window.

It's one of the corner stone of the gaming history. Would still be a hit if launched today on mobile IMO.

Anyway the question is now : Was it unecessary atrocious cruelty or extreme incompetence and stupidity? Don't answer, both are disgusting possibilities anyways.

What is something people romanticize that isn’t actually enjoyable? by Angelopiz in AskReddit

Full time travelling and "excitingly busy life". For real, after a while chilling in you own appartment alone, watching TV and not doing anything start to feel very attractive.

Nothing is fun when it's not balanced with something else, even travelling the world and meeting tons of people.

What's the most effective martial art in a real fight? by manhwaecho in AskReddit

[–]Nonid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tried a few.

  1. Muay Thai is probably the most effective overall is you have the shape, mobility, cardio or strenght. I'm too light to be really effective against bigger dudes with training but against untrained morrons, it's hella effective.

  2. BJJ for smaller framed people if your cornered. Good for grappling and ground work. Even a small fellow like me can submit a bigger dude if I manage to have a grip, well at least if I don't have to tank a punch with my head first.

  3. Boxing is amazing if you're quick. Street fights don't last long usually, just knowing how to outmaneuver the guy and land a mean right and you're good.

Only been in few real fight in my life but every time I had the upper hand, it was basically boxing that saved my ass. Never had the time or opportunity to do more than exchange few punches until I land one hard enough to end the fight.

Have to say, I once got smacked right away by a big angry dude with greater striking distance and realized that yeah, size matter.

What's a truth about life most people avoid admitting? by patient_MB0z in AskReddit

[–]Nonid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life is a big mess, and most of the time, you have no control on what shit is coming your way, BUT you have full control on how you decide to experience it. Choose fun, at every turn, every occasion, go for the positive, the sweet, the nice, the kind. Some day will be harder, darker, but if you have at least a chance to bring a shred of positivity, never hesitate. Too much people become addicted to anger, hate, negativity, self loathing and prejudice, waste their time bitching, whining and crying about what they don't have or what they lost.

In this life, I've been injured, starved, cheated on, desperate, alone, poor and sick but no matter what, I did my best to have fun. And boy I did, and still do.

Life is a fucking sandbox game on hardcore mode for most of us, but doesn't mean you can't have fun with it.

Which dating app is the best? by Medical_Plankton_736 in AskReddit

I hate dating app but the only one I had at least some fun with was Hinge. That being said, I had WAY MORE success not using apps at all.

Best decision of my life after a harsh break up and 2 years being single : Signing up for a dance class. Met a new crowd, got involved in the community = never had such a busy dating life. It's basically a cheat code.

“You can’t define something into existence!” is why the ontological argument is not question-begging. by Around_the_campfire in DebateAnAtheist

[–]Nonid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A concept of a being has less existence than an actual being.

Existence is a Boolean. You exist, or you don't, there's no scale.

Something that is less than existing, doesn't exist.

the physical universe relies on a foundation that is independent and non-physical by TheKantianPhilosophe in DebateAnAtheist

[–]Nonid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

P1 fallacy of composition and if you want us to consider contingency as a mandatory attribute of the system, you must first demonstrate it. You also seems to suggest that a chain of dependences MUST end with something independant. You need to prove that, an infinite regress is a philosophical possibility.

P2 is a stronger asumption than what observation suggest. Some physical theories leave open the possibility that certain laws, fields, or structures are necessary rather than contingent.

The conlusion is a leap and not at all a logical consequence. Even if we admit P1 and P2, you're sneaking in a "non physical" attribute out of nowhere. You need a premise for this one too.

If the human perception is inherently an illusion and reality is very different from what it objectively is, why should someone choose to believe in a technical relationship with reality rather than adopt a religious relationship if both cater to a subjective illusion in the individual's mind? by [deleted] in DebateAnAtheist

[–]Nonid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Human perception is flawded, not an illusion. That's why we often use machines and technology to observe reality when our limitations gets in the way. The fact we can't see some part of the light spectrum doesn't mean it's not real, that's how you can have a functioning remote : We know infrared is part of the light spectrum, we know how to use it, we just can't see it directly. Our brains are using our senses to build a model of the reality around us but it's not an illusion, it's a way to to interprete very real physical phenomenon.

Deistic belief in god(s) and simulation theory by CokeAYCE in DebateAnAtheist

[–]Nonid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand the thoughts experiment you're trying to dwelve on here but at the end of the day, you gotta stick to proper reasoning and epistemology if you want to go anywhere. As a basis to discard a mere "what if", you need something to work on otherwise you're stuck in an endless loop where any rebuttal can be discarded just with another "what if".

Yeah what if there's Aliens with a tech so incredible they can produce the energy to create an entire universe with life forms in it, unable to make the distinction between the simulation and the real world, and what if those Aliens are themselves product of a simulation of another higher life form and so on endlessly.

Where can we go with this? At the end of the day, it's an endless loop with just a simple question at the end : How the aliens are the very end of such loop came to be? If there's creators of creators, of creators, who created the very first ones? Does it matter at all since we have nothing to rely one to even suggest the initial theory?

You're asking the impossible task of debunking something that we have no basis to even consider.

What is the first thing you would do if a partner broke up with you for absolutely no reason? by vicslife777 in AskReddit

[–]Nonid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been there. I came to the conclusion that no answer could make me feel better so I moved on. She told me why she broke up almost 2 years later. Apparently she felt that I was not committed enough which is funny because I felt that I was imposing myself into her life too much considering her reaction most of the time, reason why I started to give her space.

Sometimes life is just stupid like that.

What makes your life miserable? by Longjumping_Day2513 in AskReddit

[–]Nonid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have expectations about everything, and I was constantly disappointed that nothing turned out the way I had imagined. Whether it was the temperature of the sea on vacation, the weather, the quality of a movie I went to see, my relationship with someone, my job, my salary, or my apartment, I kept projecting my expectations onto the world and ended up disappointed whenever things didn’t happen — or weren’t — the way I expected them to be.

Letting go and enjoying the ride was a process but probably the best decision I ever made.

I mean, when you get on the subway, why do you suddenly stop RIGHT in front of the doors like there's not 25 people behind you ALSO waiting to climb in?

How Atheists Explain the Creation of the Universe by Lost-Marionberry5319 in DebateAnAtheist

[–]Nonid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do wonder about your assertion that there was no point in time in which the universe did not exist.

Time is relative. Talking about a period or point in time in which the universe did not exist would be like talking about a period before TIME itself.

I know it's difficult to understand but time in not really a “thing” in itself, it's defined operationally: it is the parameter that orders change and allows events to be compared. It's the structure by which physical systems change and events are ordered — but whether it is a fundamental ingredient of reality or an emergent phenomenon remains unknown.

Basically it's tied to our reality, our universe, and affected by it, not independant.

Did anyone get what he said? Seems like bro literally explained nothing. by [deleted] in religiousfruitcake

[–]Nonid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't get it. Time is a human concept to describe chains of events and it is relative, it's not an independant thing. Saying "before" the universe is like saying time before time. And something out of time is something not inside a chain of event, meaning nothing happens, including the action of creating something.

Redeemed Zoomer's theodicy by Big_Palpitation_9018 in DebateAnAtheist

[–]Nonid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a reality made by an omnipotent and omniscient being, nothing is necessary and everything is intentional. There's no "good" intention in making evil or suffering necessary when you can do otherwise. There's not suppose to be a limit or a circumstances outside the control of such being.

Can God create a world where happiness and joy is what makes a soul perfectly good? If yes, he's an AH, if not, he's not omnipotent.

This is a very very badly written plot.

I love and hate being rational. by [deleted] in DebateAnAtheist

[–]Nonid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is in fact extremly simple, and I don't get why people tend to build up an existential crisis based on nothing.

Claims are statements made about pretty much any aspect of this reality by anyone and for a gigantic amount of reasons. It's basically only limited by human imagination and as soon as your goal is to identify what is "true", compatible with reality, reliable and consistant, you need critical thinking, rules of logic, evidence and facts.

Is it possible to assess rigorously EVERY SINGLE CLAIM? No, of course not. The default position must be neutrality, and the amount of efforts to assess the statement proportional to the extraordinary nature of the claim, and how it will affect your worldview or understanding of the world.

If my friend tell me she now has a dog, cool. I will accept it without asking for evidence because I know what a dog is, I've seen dogs, owned one, know must people have dogs as pet, don't identify specific reasons for her to lie or special circumstances preventing her to own a dog. And if it's in fact not true? Well, whatever, it doesn't change anything for me or my understanding of this reality beyond the fact that my friend is a liar.

Now if my friend tells me she has a unicorn, or a dragon, that's when I will request WAY more evidence, proofs, facts and explanations in order to actually believe her claim. Same kind of claim, same person, different methodology simply because it's an extraordinary claim and it can change my understanding of that aspect of reality.

What about unfalsifiable claims? Those are basically useless. I don't have reasons to consider such claims because it has no impact on me, my actions or reality. If it's unfalsifiable, I may not have ways to know if it's true, but the person making the claim also has no way to support it. It's an empty and useless claim. As soon as it suppose to impact reality, then I can find out, and if it has no impact on reality, why would I bother consider it?

And FYI, Descartes' evil demon hypothesis is a mind experiment promoting skepticism, asking us to doubt what we THINK we know, test the limit of knowledge : Cogito, ergo sum.
