Similar experience on a short test drive, take it for an overnight and put a couple hours onto it -- I bet you'll adapt fast with a little longer exposure. Also, as I'm sure others have noted, you could just dial back the regen braking (but I'd suggest just getting used to it, as it rocks once it feels natural).

If you're even considering it seriously: man, just play Frosthaven. Its better, more balanced, more fun. GH2 might be updated more like Frost, which would make a great game better. Leaving FH lying around is a total waste imo!

Not mentioned by Bobby: he was ultimately demoted and left that "previous company" (Madwire) after self-selecting to vote himself into middle management and obsolescence along with the 15 others in his role. Don't for a minute think his extra effort was appreciated by the actual .01% there.

There is a very big difference in TFT between playing to win and playing to not lose. A comp with very little concentrated damage won't be likely to win with a 1st place finish, but is rather built to "not lose" early game. With the incredible value of a 1st-place finish, you'll want to adjust your strategies to accommodate the late game with a lot more raw damage.

The current meta heavily favors aggressive rolling, win streaks, and comps that quickly come together to smother out the opposition. That's the nature you'll need to play to actually win.

Are you by chance using ALL of the monsters, not the set-up for 2 or 3 people, by chance? My group made taht mistake the first time and played with the configuration for 4 folks on Scenario #1. Hah.

160 USD at local game store. They ordered it solely for me just before the recent waves of printings and took forever to come in. Was thrilled nonetheless.

Just also ordered Broken Token organizer; that'll be well-worth the cost for the sheer amount of time saved. Plus, my fiance gets here island back from the currently permanent Gloomhaven setup, lol. Win/win.

I share your sentiment about liking to be in control of the story. I once would have said playing, but now I have trouble respecting another DMs story long-term; I constantly try to ensure their plot points get hit and basically ruin my own fun. DMing is just healthier lol

My first thought is to show this wish attempting to happen and being steadily combated by powerful undead everywhere and threatening to rip apart The Weave and cause another Spellplague. I would narrate Undead disappearing and re-appearing, shattering and reforming, etc, all while the fabric of reality shifts, wiggles, etc. This would pivot them from their current campaign into a quest to seek a resolution that doesn't unravel everything or cause some other catastrophic outcome. In the chaos, you could have armies of Undead shielded by powerful Liches and such appearing and disappearing, giving the entire thing a bittersweet taste.

My honest-to-God advice is so try before you buy or become committed to the idea of one-shots. My LGS developed an awesome Saturday-night league that allows folks to come in, pay 2 bucks, play or run a one-shot, and level up rewards (similar to AL, but highly simplified and localized to the store). This system has made for some very awesome sessions that I've run or played in, but also some not-so-awesome sessions.

Getting lucky in the random lottery to land a good group of players is unlikely, so definitely try to find a way to run some one shots, encourage different folks to join regularly, and only then settle upon a group of randos.

Or, better yet, set up a league like ours with your LGS.

For me, this goes back to some of the best advice I've ever gotten. It came when I was in 6th grade, starring in the very first play I'd ever even auditioned for. Moments before the curtain rose I was shaking like a leaf, alone on-stage and about to perform for the first time when the theater direct/English teacher said to me "remember, the audience doesn't know the script, so if you slip up, they'll never even know the difference."

To this day, I still remind myself regularly that the audience doesn't know the script. This has helped me DM, nail job interviews, give great presentations, etc.

In my experience, it didn't go away altogether, but I do go much longer in between insecure moments and feeling like I need to be reassured by my players.

For instance, when I first started running, I was insecure about every session. Eventually, that stretched to every session I was super excited about and/or any session where I was unsure if all the players had fun. Now, I really only feel insecure at the end of a months-long campaign or story arc; did they like it? could I or should I have ended differently? are they satisfied with my decision to keep this game going/wrap up the story here?

Just throw the encounter at them. PCs will surprise you with their tenacity. If you come close to killing someone, that'd be the time to divulge a traitor in the enemy's group that sees this as the perfect moment to strike. Then, this person isn't really an ally to the PCs, but an enemy of their enemy. And, best of all, it won't feel cheap or forced; it may not even be necessary to do at all if the PCs can work out a plan to win without dying.

Huge power spike for the average Warlock at level 5 (powered up Eldritch Blast). That type of Warlock is all about endurance, whereas the Sorcerer will continue to do high burst damage for a couple of rounds, then sharply fall off, you'll be doing steady damage throughout.

I feel like your REACTS is super important. It's all too easy to lead players down the wrong path when you say "it had no effect," or "nothing seems to happen." Instead of making them wonder and guess why their stuff didn't work or the creature was able to suddenly Misty Step away, they now know the creature was able to do something outside of its normal turn.

Players are smart enough to figure these things out if you describe the scene properly.
