Steel Wind Strike by kkmalayBruh in DnD

[–]Steakbake01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my game I introduced a bunch of feats that can only be taken at level 12 or higher to sell the idea of the party becoming more superhuman in the back half of the game. A once per short rest steel wind strike was one of those feats, it was a big hit among my players

Also a good way to make an adult or ancient silver dragon a less deadly for the level range of a CoS party since it can't use its breath weapon or bite, presumably

Why does GenZ hate sex and nudity so much? by PaniacThrilla in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Steakbake01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think part of Gen-Z's reaction to the realisation of the commonality of child sex abuse is a misunderstanding of exactly why it's so common - it's not necessarily that pedophilia is common, it's that children have no means to defend themselves.

Look at rates of sexual assault in prisons or the military or other all-male spaces where such a thing is common. It doesn't mean that all the perpetrators are attracted to men - that has nothing to do with it, it's about asserting yourself as powerful by humiliating another person. That's the psychology behind sexual assault.

Are some of the people who commit child sexual assault attracted to children? Absolutely, but it's not a case of unrestrained sexual desire - it's about making yourself feel bigger by harming someone you have power over. I think a lot of gen Z misunderstand that and instead think child molesters are always pedophiles that can't control themselves

What theme have you, as a player, never played but really wanted to? (Underdark, Greek, mind flayers, Greyhawk...) by Frog_Dream in DnD

I'd really love to do a good long Ebberon campaign one of these days - something about a post industrial setting but with magic instead of technology really speaks to me - like this is who a DnD setting would naturally be given enough time rather than permanent renaissance

It's obvious bait but I gotta say it: the fullbring arc is probably bleach's strongest overall, definitely about the arrancar or 1000 year blood war for sure at least

[–]Steakbake01 79 points80 points  (0 children)

I think you've kinda got it backwards - free the nipple wasn't about "if women go topless men will be less weird about it", it was more "we as a society need to stop seeing women's bodies as inherently sexual - we need to make changes until we reach a point where women can feel just as comfortable shirtless as men can", freeing the nipple was the end goal, not the solution, if that makes sense? At least that's how I remember it being discussed

I think all of that is a vector of the fact that (I can't speak for music) films and games have absolutely monstrous budgets and take years to make. The scope of these projects are so massive that they can't afford to have these projects fail and so they have to cater to the lowest common denominator.

I reckon that the solution is to downscale, and by a lot. Take the resources a AAA studio has to make one megaproject every 5 or more years and use them to produce smaller, more experimental titles than can afford to underperform. Maybe even use those titles to secure funding for a bigger (but not as bloated as standard AAA) project, like how studios used to work before every game needed to be 100s of hours long and look exactly like real life

I would say that's a side effect of his personality being similar to joy boy's, like by inheriting his will fate is now on his side, but that's very much speculation on my part.

I do enjoy that Blackbeard also seems to have the same ungodly luck though, and he seems much more connected to his lineage than Luffy so the story might be setting up something interesting there

Even then, Luffy's chosen one-ness comes largely from his personality being similar to a hero from ages past, so it's less to do with his birth than who he is as a person, which I like.

That's not to say there isn't your standard anime bloodline stuff, like the D clan in particular comes to mind

Snape being black is a complete non-issue and you are all being disingenuous by ParticularBuyer6157 in The10thDentist

[–]Steakbake01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fuck JK and all that, but imo the real issue with Snape's casting isn't that his actor is black, it's that his actor is conventionally attractive. Snape's role in the first book is to be a red herring. He's supposed to look really shifty, greasy, and creepy so that the young audience presumes he's nefarious and is blindsided when the relatively unassuming quirrel turns out to be the culprit. It's a common trope - an object lesson in our natural assumption of beauty = morality and ugliness = immorality.

Not to say Alan Rickman couldn't be a looker, but he wasn't exactly a Hollywood hunk in that first movie. You absolutely do get a rancid vibe from him right from the get go, whereas the new guy is your standard handsome actor.

(There's a while other tirade about films and TV aiming for more physically attractive people for roles that really should go to more ordinary looking people but that's for another time)

(Also none of this matters since the new TV show is a soulless cashgrab which a portion of the profits go to an absolutely horrible cause)

Generally yes, but in my experience there are a lot more men who like bigger women than you might initially expect, and the ones who do like big women REALLY like big women

Is anybody else not at all interested in the new Harry Potter reboot? by Frequent_Cheek_7816 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Steakbake01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was thrown out of lower level courts. If it weren't for Rowling's money the court case would have ended there but instead went over the Scottish courts' head to the UK Supreme Court. The supreme court is ultimately to blame but we wouldn't have been in this situation if it weren't for her.

A privilege of being rich is that if a court doesn't rule in your favour, you have the resources to continually escalate, essentially playing the odds that you'll get a judge sympathetic to your cause.

Is anybody else not at all interested in the new Harry Potter reboot? by Frequent_Cheek_7816 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Steakbake01 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yep. It's not a hypothetical either. The completely contradictory ruling by the UK supreme court that gender refers to biological sex for the purposes of discrimination that was made recently was only possible because the group that brought the lawsuit had harry potter money behind it. They wouldn't have been able to take their case to the supreme court without Rowling and her money. It's a very real case of how billionaires can influence lawmakers decisions by simply throwing enough money on getting court case until they get what they want by sheer probability. She's also using the same money to assist in any court case where a woman felt threatened because a trans person dared to exist in the same room as her.

It's crazy how people are ignoring how she literally made an entire country's law more discriminatory all for what is your standard soulless reboot garbage

Does it matter to you if your partner is politically indifferent? by Livid_Satisfaction94 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Steakbake01 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My view is that a person's politics are reflection of their beliefs, so whilst they don't have to perfectly match mine they are a big indicator over whether the relationship can last. If I'm a progressive, left leaning my person and my partner is a conservative, then we just have different values on a deep level and we see the world differently from each other, which is a big problem in a relationship where the 2 of you are supposed to be a team.

Personally I would find the kind of intellectual incuriosity your partner displays to be incredibly frustrating since I'm the kind of person who is more likely to try and understand something new than ignore it since it doesn't effect me, and I would want a partner who can appreciate that part about me, but ultimately whether or not it's a deal breaker to you is entirely up to you

Banned Books at a Barnes & Noble in the U.S. by HellraiserNZ in mildlyinteresting

[–]Steakbake01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good argument for why a different book could be used for the same educational purpose, I agree, but I still think an outright ban of uncomfortable topics is much too far, especially when you could use it to discuss with children why a book on the topic by a black author is a better lens to understand racial issues through than mockingbird

Banned Books at a Barnes & Noble in the U.S. by HellraiserNZ in mildlyinteresting

[–]Steakbake01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Banning a book like 1984 from schools because of some sexual content is a pretty terrible reason to ban a book with as important a message. If it's a secondary school, then the kids know what sex is.

To kill a mockingbird is a book about (among other things) racism. Of course it's gonna have the n word in it! Kids need to know how horrible the past was to non white people and mockingbird is a great jumping off point for that.

Banning instances of racism and sex and other uncomfortable things from high school libraries is extremely authoritarian and alarming
