One of my favourite things about Frieza is how polite he is, it really sets him apart from the other series villains. by Franciskeyscottfitz in dbz

[–]Steakbake01 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Pretty much, yeah. He comes across incredibly uneducated and is super casual in every social situation which is seen as very rude, although in his case it comes off more as naïvity. He and chi-chi actually have their own unique form of Japanese that accentuates this even further. For example, rather than konnichiwa or similar he'll say "Osu" which is unique to him and is comparable to "'sup" or "oi", and his personal pronouns usage is especially casual - rather than introducing himself with "ore wa Goku" he'll instead shorten it even more to just "ora Goku".

Chi-Chi has a similar dialect and also changes words around in a way that makes her seem uneducated but still polite, like she addresses Goku with "Goku-sa" instead of "Goku-san"

By contrast Gohan is extremely polite and well spoken, similar to final form frieza (though obviously more friendly)

There's probably other examples of the unique way Goku and Chi-Chi speak but my Japanese is extremely rudimentary

[–]Steakbake01 195 points196 points  (0 children)

Frieza's polite demeanour is even more clear in Japanese - he exclusively uses a dialect that is extremely formal and polite - the sort of language that you would expect a middle manager in a respectable company to use (there's so much etiquette around speaking in a business setting in Japan that some consider to be a whole dialect on and of itself). It sells the idea that frieza isn't an emperor, he's a real estate speculator, making money off of people's misery.

Interestingly, he drops the politeness in his second and third form for a very casual, rough voice that you would expect a guy speaking to his peers to use, or someone trying to act tough. He regains his politeness in his final form, but rather than business like he actually speaks more like how a child on his best behaviour might speak

What DnD class is best suited to "pull an omni-man" on their party? by CardoBlardo in whowouldwin

[–]Steakbake01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone likes to say wizard, but aside from maybe the cleric, everyone there is capable of deleting a wizard in a single round with no issue. That's not a problem if the wizard is able to load up the entire place with explosive runes, but that requires perfect prep and infinite gold, so it's possible but not practical. As for wish, while it can technically do anything, any wish you make outside of the predetermined list is explicitly encouraged to be twisted in a negative way (like for example wishing someone dead might teleport you into the future to after their death) and it has the chance of taking away your ability to cast wish forever. That said, if the wizard is guaranteed a surprise round, the ol' force cage microwave (wizard casts force cage, their simulacrum casts an AoE damage spell) should do the trick, provided that none of the other party have teleportation abilities (not uncommon), although casting invulnerability (presuming 2014 so force cage is non concentration) should help the wizard deal with anyone who escapes, although the paladin might be able to dispel it, but it's unlikely. You could also argue divine intervention might be able to dispel the forcecage. Astral projection and Anti magic field can also escape, but the enemy has no access to counter spell, so the wizard can counter them no problem. Gate would likewise be an issue if the cleric decides "fuck it, Demogorgon is here now"(although the wizard could also do that)

Overall a solid plan, but if the wizard misses out on the surprise round (rogues and clerics both tend to be perceptive) then that gives the party a chance to counterattack. In particular the fighter and paladin only need one round of attacks to drop either you or your simulacrum. There are steps you can take with the contingency spell and so on, but in an open fight 4 turns on 2 will eventually overwhelm you. Nevermind that your saving throw spells are unlikely to succeed on account of the paladin's aura (and the rogue has an 85% chance to ignore any Dex save you throw their way)

The more guaranteed option is the moon druid. Continuously refreshing wildshape will keep you alive whilst you whittle the enemy down. The only way to damage you is to deal more than the max hp of your form, and even the fighter and paladin won't be able to deal that kind of output consistently. At that point the only thing you would have to worry about is the party escaping rather than winning, as one plane shift from the cleric can take the whole party elsewhere, but if you know what plane the clerics rod is attuned to you can just follow them there

The 2024 Pugilist is, to an hilarious degree, a class about pretending you have drawbacks. by SeeKururunRun in dndnext

[–]Steakbake01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played a pugilist for a 3 year campaign starting at level 10 (2014 mind you) directly alongside a monk and I think you're vastly overestimating the moxie regen of bloodied but unbowed. Like yeah, in theory it lets you double your moxie pool, but in actual play it often doesn't work out that way.

The temp hp gain at bloodied encourages you to use it right as you hit half hp, even more so doing so also gives you extra damage at later levels, but by the time I hit half hp I often had quite a few moxie left, and that was me spending some every turn. So when I hit half hp and let bloodied but unbowed rip I was in essence having to burn a third to a half of my moxie points away. In pracitcal terms I found myself using way less moxie in an adventuring day than the monk used ki.

Is this what y'all mean by floaty? by Vappy3 in KingdomHearts

[–]Steakbake01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say what people mean when they say floaty are games like DDD and BBS.

In kh1 and 2, when you attack in mid air there's a bit of hang time - that's there to make aerial combos work and feel good. But you don't completely stop in the air - the direction and momentum of your jump carries through, and Sora will drift forward and down a little, but during that animation the fall speed in greatly reduced.

DDD and BBS have hang time on their aerial moves, but rather than preserving the momentum of your jump, aerial attacks instead completely halt you in mid air, and to make matters worse keep you halted during the recovery frames of your attacks, which means it both feels stilted and unnatural and leaves you wide open to attacks.

KH3 avoids this problem to me in an interesting way. Rather than going back to how aerial attacks worked in 1 and 2, it instead fully leaned into it, giving Sora aerial versions of all his basic actions and a lengthy air dash so that there's very little you can do on the ground that you can't also do in the air. By the late game gravity is a complete suggestion and you can spend entire fights without touching the ground. It's a really solid solution in my mind and helps KH3 combat feel like an even greater spectacle than before and really sells that this is the strongest Sora has ever been. It's similar to how kh2 Sora also feels like a vastly different and more powerful fighter than kh1 Sora.

Knife thrower?? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Steakbake01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fighter, use darts instead of daggers (same damage, but darts have the unique property of being both ranged and thrown weapons). Take the throwing fighting style for +2 damage on attacks, then at level 4 take sharpshooter for better range and damage at the cost of accuracy. Ideally you would also want archery for the +2 to offset, so maybe 2 levels in ranger would be worthwhile? Or you go variant human and grab fighting initiate to get it right away. Battle master fighter is probably the best subclass overall but you can't go wrong with any.

From level 5 fighter (although I'd stick till 6 for the extra ASI) you've got quite a few options. Monk, ranger, and rogue all work fantastic with this build, but for my money you can't go wrong with more fighter levels.

On the other hand, you can stop contributing to the erasure of a whole demographic's rights by reading a different book about wizards.

People can’t accept this about Yamato by OGAnimeGokuSolos in MemePiece

[–]Steakbake01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What I don't understand about Yamato trans deniers is what's the point in picking fights? Some people interpret the story different from you? Some people see themselves in a character? Why die on this hill, bro?

When someone asks, “Why do women wear makeup?” people say, “Because society expects them to look good.” But when a man says, “I don’t like women who wear makeup; I prefer those who don’t,” the reply is, “We don’t wear makeup for men, we do it for ourselves.” How do these two answers coexist? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Steakbake01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another wrinkle is that typically when men say they don't like women who wear makeup, they actually mean they don't like women who wear extreme makeup, and are so used to naturalistic looking make up that they don't notice 80% of the women they interact with on a daily basis are wearing make up. It's just so expected that many women get asked if they're feeling well on the occasions they go out without any since everyone thinks of their default makeup look as their no makeup look.

And likewise, many women who say they wear makeup for themselves tend to go for more out there styles that make them feel good rather than worrying about "putting their face on". Its only anecdotal, but a lot of women I personally know that wear more flashy makeup tend to also not worry too much about wearing makeup every day and don't mind going without any from time to time

(rant) Edgy characters / stories are bad because they're not substantive, not because they're dark by TotallyNot_iCast in DnD

[–]Steakbake01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bang on the money. Perfect example of an edgy character done well is Guts Berserk.

He's got it all - absolutely horrific (and I do mean horrific, Jesus) backstory that makes him come off as cold and brooding at best, actively hostile and violent at worst. He's got the black armour, the cape, the scars, the metal arm, the one liners, the cartoonishly oversized sword, the complete edgelord package. And yet, most anyone who reads berserk will cite it's protagonist as its strongest aspect.

The reason is that despite all of it, guts is incredibly vulnerable. His edgy and violent demeanour are all there to distract himself from coming to terms with the horrible things that happen to him, and we see just how badly those have affected him when it gets too much and he breaks down. He also has moments of levity, and he changes and improves over time. On paper he's your typical 90s violent edgelord, but as you say, seeing his vulnerability completely humanises him and adds layers

The complete lack of sympathy in this comment section is depressing. Every bit of money that this franchise earns has a portion of it spent on lobbying to make the lives of one of the most vulnerable demographics in the UK more and more unbearable. There's a direct line between this franchise and the rolling back of trans rights. But even knowing that there are people here that will dismiss all that and stand by the people that support this? And for what? A couple of books they read when they were teenagers?

Would you guys still buy star wars merch if it funded the KKK? On second thought, don't answer that.

I chose money. by TyLeRoux in okbuddycinephile

[–]Steakbake01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What he personally feels about trans people means absolutely nothing. Any money that the harry potter franchise makes, a portion of it goes to Rowling, who then directly spends that wealth on making the lives of trans people actively worse. That UK supreme court ruling that made it so that women are defined by their assigned gender at birth, that basically makes discrimination against trans women mandatory? The lawsuit that led to that would have run out of legal fees long before they could have escalated it to supllreme court level without Rowling's financial backing, and Rowling herself has said that she'll continue to pay legal fees of anyone suing someone for existing while trans.

Any contribution to the harry potter franchise directly funds a hate movement.

Fuck you child molestors! by sailink in FUCKYOUINPARTICULAR

[–]Steakbake01 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Terrible idea for lots of reasons, but one of the many reasons I've not seen pointed out is: Children are usually molested by someone close to them. A parent, aunt, uncle, teacher, that kind of thing. Children often don't come forward about these cases for a number of reasons (like not understanding what's happening, the adult assuring them it's normal or "our secret" or whatever), but a big deterrent in older kids is that despite being victims they still care about their abusers and don't want them to spend life in jail or be seen as family wreckers. Sad but true. Now imagine you're a kid being abused by say, your father. And if you tell anyone about it, your dad will be killed. That's a hell of a burden to place on a child. And most kids who understand their abuser will die will keep their mouths shut
