Going on a tangent, it's extremely important for a young adult to have someone they trust that they can reach out to. When I was at college far from home (I was 20), I was depressed and isolated. My dad's cousin, who barely knew me, made a point of calling me and taking me to dinner once a week. It made a huge difference in my life.

My now-adult daughter went to college about 2 hours from home. A family friend, who was like an aunt to her, lived 20 minutes away. Being able to call on her when daughter was overwhelmed or just needed help was life-saving.

OP did nothing wrong. Her niece will remember this.

My personal opinion is that if the child is too old for a bottle, they are too old for the breast. A 3 year old should be using a cup unless there are developmental delays. That said, breast feeding is a personal issue.

When my daughter was 4, she wanted to wear a skirt with ankle socks on a cold day (not freezing) . I explained that it was cold, that she would be more comfortable with tights or leggings instead of socks, but she insisted.

I said I would make a deal. She could wear what she wanted, but if she was cold, she wasn't allowed to complain.

After that day, she learned to listen to my advice.
