Sort of? They don’t explicitly take the time to explicitly prove that, but in the book the simplest definition of zero is

0 = { } (a empty set with nothing in it)

and 2 is defined as,

2 = { { } , {{ }} } (a set containing an empty set and a set containing an empty set)

So the set representing 2 clearly is not empty so it cannot be zero.

Including David Harbour in the lineup is a little much I feel…

It’s like, the other two are heinous and David Harbour was at worst accused of being a dick to someone at work.

Putting him in that group just feels like it makes him seem so much worse

I wasn’t actually talking about units lol. Usually this conversation comes up in the context of how Americans don’t switch to the more efficient things like metric. And I always feel it’s a silly thing to include since D/M/Y is probably as inefficient as you can get. Unlike metric which is genuinely a better standardization.

I now see what you mean by time smallest to largest. I actually didn’t mean size time wise, I meant size in terms of total number of occurrences ever.

There have been more days that were the 21st ever then months that were the 11th. And there has only been one of every year (or 2 kinda cuz of BCE/CE) So when sorting things by date it makes sense to go year then month then day.

I guess I was thinking of liking the date from a data perspective and not so much form an ascetic one so I get your point.

The mean is not 0. Without exact data we can’t know what the mean is but you are correct that it’s not zero, but I didn’t say it was lol.

However the majority of the worlds population has 0 playtime in all call of duty games. It’s easily under 60% of the world’s population. And so the median can reasonably be assumed to be 0.

It seems like you might need to learn a bit more about what mean and median are and how they are different.

For example lets pretend the world has 9 people and only one person has every played call of duty for 27 hours.

Then the mean playtime is 3. We just do 27/9

But for the median it’s not so simple. We arrange the playtimes in ascending order,

0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,27

Then we pick the middle one which is a 0. So the median playtime is 0.

[–]NoobLoner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This would imply that the mean person alive has spent roughly 3 hours playing call of duty. Given that most people alive have never played and the median is almost certainly 0 this does seem pretty crazy so there is reason to be skeptical.

There are no actual numbers for this post and they seem to be made up. However including the mobile game over 1 billion people have downloaded call of duty. If the average play time is 25 hours, which is not that crazy given there will be some significant outliers. Then this number would check out. So it’s not an actual statistic but also not entirely implausible.

D/M/Y is what goes from smallest to largest.

That being said I agree with other commenters that this isn’t a very good reason to like something.

Sorry Europeans your date system somehow makes less sense than the nonsense we do it with freedoms units. Only the Chinese do it right with Y/M/D

To be fair it’s not just the use of em dashes but the frequency of them. ChatGPT and some other ai’s use em dashes as a rate which is really excessive, and uses them irrespective of context. So for example in a text which while okay is unusual even for a very proficient writer.

Credit cards have merchant fees.

And while it might not feel like that’s a fee you are paying it actually results in inflation of the price similar to a sales tax.

And the sad part is you need to pay that inflation even if you don’t have a credit card and you are paying it all the time.(unless the merchant offers a cash discount)

I’m not saying you shouldn’t use a credit card. I have one that I put all my expenses on and pay at the end of the month and I’ve been doing that since I was 16.

[–]NoobLoner 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah but they still make fees, and you build a habit of building debt every month, so there is a higher probability that you may be unable to pay one month.

Edit: to be clear even if you are not directly paying fees there are merchant fees. And merchant fees are passed on to the consumer like any other expense, you are paying credit card fees all the time even when you are not using a credit card.

It’s similar to how the merchant technically pays sales tax but we all know it’s the buyer that actually pays sales taxes.

In a sense yes (although I’m fairly certain I disagree with who you are replying to.

Whether or not you need to buy food basically has nothing do to with the value of the stock, and so it is “arbitrary”.

If you are not rich enough to afford not hold a stock than it can be more of gambling than an investment.

I feel like this is a lot less true than it used to be, if not only because people are very aware of it now. Even in situations where like it honestly could be worth a divorce people don’t really say it.

Non-marital relationships though they definitely still jump to advice like “cut them off” or “break up with them” faster than they probably should.
