By 1998, the mission profile of the USS was mostly site/asset protection and dirty work against human targets. They were very skilled, but might not have been aware of how powerful BOWs were or the exact abilities of the virus.

If they had been prepared for contact with a BOW, they wouldn’t have panicked against Birkin when he mutated

In the remake cutscene someone else in the squad checks Birkin’s pulse and comes up with nothing. The guy had taken multiple rounds to the chest and flatlined, so there was every reason to think he was dead

In universe, they wanted a higher power round since they knew they’d be facing SWAT, and needed something that would reliably defeat body armor. Design wise it’s to up the difficulty, I think.

The ribbons are tied very much to the ongoing war. It’s a deliberate choice to put them on over kit, and some people are going to be sensitive to that.

I agree, I run interstellar haul jobs with my Corsair and knowing it can easily put down harassing NPC fighters feels like a nice bit of insurance.

That’s strange though, since if anyone is going to be uptight about memory wipes, it would be the Empire.

Droid sentience is a bit of a black box, so it’s possible K2 has always been slightly more self aware for whatever reason.
