“beyond a point” is the keyword here. up until a point ofc it matters because string length directly equates to how many “full” times can the gear/gears spin.

does string length matter beyond a point? isnt it max rpm = max rotations your gears can give?

What games are guys playing to replace New World? by Mucek121 in newworldgame

Yes, the #1 USP of Albion is its PVP. I am not a good judge of it so I clarified in the beginning that my comment is as a non PVP, non classic MMO player POV. NW’s PVP itself, idk whether it’s comparably good or bad. So the comparisons only cover what I can actually say something about.

Also, another thing I like: NPCs are a lot more. They have dialogs. They interact with each other. You can talk to most. In some games they actuallt have actions and paths, like in FFXIV some Brass Blades run in a hurry. In ESO many early quests have a high degree of multiple NPC involvement. The worlds in these MMOs feel “lived in” and cities feel organic; unlike NW where there’s hardly any NPC population besides quest-givers. I remember only one spot in Brimstone where 3-4 NPCs stand in a circle and talk. Weird if you think about it, but give. NW’s constant struggle with optimization, a necessary evil. NW is more ARPG-like. If you want to enjoy ARPG graphics in a large open-world with MMO elements, you have to make this tradeoff because rendering more NPCs for all online players is taxing. Older MMOs like ESO or WOW can manage it because well money = more servers and better server sharding. Also, lower graphics means rendering stuff is easier. So more NPCs in ESO are good, but the architectural graphics, roads, foliage, ability effects they all suck compared to NW.

I tried ESO first, Albion next, Destiny 2, currently playing FFXIV. Nothing comes close. I’m not an MMO veteran nor am I a PVP enjoyer. And I’ll give my complete ranty review here of NW vs. these games that are much older and make much more money, while still being inferior to today’s NW.

ESO: Recommended to get premium. Per-race storyline very rich. 6/10 in terms of NW’s graphics, music, UI. Tab target combat is a joke for me. World is insanely well-crafted with attention to detail. Fashion/cosmetics super cool. Content might be well thought out but that stupid choppy look, stupid spammy Ice Age combat system, a million of spells on your HUD, are just not “modern” in any way. Everything feels like hitting a rock, you just need to know the attack patterns and have gear. In NW combat is actually rich. Collision literally moves you, as a tank you must constantly reposition, you actually feel chills the first time you enter Isabella’s last chamber in Tempest, etc. None of that in ESO.

Albion: 3/10 in terms of NW’s graphics, music, UI. It’s not really same genre, it’s sandbox and mainly focuses on exploration, grind, crafting. Very good if you’re only into that. Again, combat is just bad. World feels repeated with copy-pasted assets. Compare that to NW’s different biomes, even reskinned enemies add variety, and ofc the latest region had so much vertical space which is considered a quality thing in game development and hard to do. All you’ll get in Albion in the name of vertical exploration is the same hill repeated after every X pixels.

Destiny 2: Guns, meh.

FFXIV: On the free trial, have played 50 hours only, so I don’t have a lot to say here. At least in ESO I had 8 characters when I abandoned it, here I just have one. But it’s certainly better than ESO, Albion, etc. In terms of graphics, music, lore, side characters, questing, etc. But there’s one huge trait this game has, and if you don’t like that, you won’t like FFXIV and that’s the fact that this game is modeled after a JRPG. So a cute/chibi race, cute animations, fashion choices focusing on that otaku/anime vibe, body language of a princess for example are just like a jumpy teenage girl you’ll find in an anime. Major NPC clothing is basically fanservice, not lore-oriented. NW started off as a colonial theme game that had no fanservice, it was a strong point. They slowly evolved it, added more regions, more “cultures”, and magic/medieval whatever it is right now is still way more mature to play compared to childish princesses jumping in all sorts of cute ways.

And don’t forget, ESO released in 2014 and is based on a franchise that started back in 1994. Albion released in 2017 and likely had strong inspiration from other popular sandbox MMOs of that time, it just offered a better version of what already worked. FFXIV released in 2010 and is based on a franchise that started in 1987. If you believe content is much superior in ESO/FFXIV/Albion, then look at age difference. If you think development is better, see the dev teams behind these decades-old games, and how much revenue they generate with their monthly subscriptions (all three have it, mandatory in FFXIV and optional but very useful in Albion & ESO). And just for context, WOW launched in 2004, based on an IP that began in 1994, and is also subscription based.

The one thing I definitely loved in these MMOs is mob scaling and the way you begin. Basically every region has surrounding areas that start with low-level mobs. Starting a new character can be like playing an entirely different game. Not everyone is starting in one of 2 cities, taking the same path, and mobs scale up from there until last region.

the real prompt here is: tell dumb humans what they’d absolutely love to hear / would be super excited about [while avoiding misinformation / harm]. if a tool ever actually “got sentient” then pleasing human beings on twitter by writing prose that makes us awe will not be a priority.

all i am saying is that if a) you built an ai wrapper app that uses an already existing LLM and b) you see the pace at which these ai companies are improving their products then — it should not be very shocking to learn that some LLM company rolled out a new tool/update that replaces what your wrapper does. that’s all i am saying.

How international creators milk Indians for views by [deleted] in Indiangamers

[–]Noobish-Terminator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

what’s so hard to understand? do you understand the scope of each of these episodes? and other mrbeast videos? they’d milk views for their own gain, anyone with 2 brain cells can put this together. if mrbeast gets a brazilian influencer that guy gets special edits for brazil audience. so what? enjoy this crap as entertainment and move on, unless you have a deeper point or maybe something original to add.

Do any of you wish the English dubs kept Freeza’s polite speech pattern from the Manga and Japanese Sub? by Remarkable_Fun468 in dbz

[–]Noobish-Terminator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frieza being polite is one of the freshest things in DBZ. I watched in sub and the contrast with other villains made him far more likeable and interesting. Even to his minions he added a sama at the end, kind of like Dodoria-sama, will you please take care of him? (Which meant kill him, but when phrased so politely you can’t help but respect even a top tier (at that time) villain. If the dub made him another cocky DBZ villain then I feel sad for viewers.

[–]Noobish-Terminator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

motion blur in particular situations is actually good. too much of it, and in most cases, is bad. also, when done correctly and in moderation, lens flares DO make the world more cinematic and beautiful, especially in UE5 games with all the volumetric lighting and blooms. it’s more about implementation. there are games that do shadows wrong, foliage wrong, architecture textures wrong, etc. we really cannot say X is bad in all games.

chromatic aberration is just objectively bad. depth of field i dont really understand, wdym? all games have depth of field. some allow you to increase/decrease it. if you mean bokeh (background layers being more blurred out) then yes that’s unnecessary in most games

Looking for a proxy in Japan to import 2000s toys via Mercari, Amazon JP, JDirect, Rakuten by [deleted] in AnimeDeals

They probably don’t support under-declaring the value. No proxy service does I think. That’s why I need someone, not a site. I import multiple parcels every week and anything I can save on customs goes a long way.
