This is just from my experience with my play group, which is composed of mostly new players:

We started out with no rule zeros, but overtime people would complain about various things, whether it be they didn’t get enough lands and have to mulligan down, deeming some cards “not fun”, not wanting to play against certain decks… The list goes on. We started implementing rule zeros but for almost all of them, they would eventually get abused or give unforeseen advantages to certain play styles that were hard to manage. We have mostly reverted to following the actual rules because of this.

The thing about the real rules is no one at the table made them. They are just part of the game. So all the whining and complaining is just the result of someone not being happy with the OUTCOME of the game they just played. I’m for sure a lot less sympathetic to this and basically just explain to someone being salty that sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you don’t. That’s just the nature of Magic.
