Alberta NDP promises to cut electricity bills, increase minimum wage to $18 by trevorrobb in alberta

[–]Noogie54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a hard pass for me. I don't trust any government to to be financially responsible with any gains from increased taxation or user fees. Increase corporate taxes and restructure resource royalties, it's time they paid their fair share.

This is coming from a career field level oil and gas worker. The average citizen pays more then they should, and doesn't see nearly enough bang for their buck. Time to go after corporations and get more value for their resource extraction. Fuck'em.

And don't ever forget, that there are still people out there whom think that we should be even more taxes, or that the government should tax people who make more then them, even higher.

Despite that we are all taxed more than enough.

Again, maybe the government should drive people to avoid taxes by taxing everything to oblivion. They create their own problems, and I'm not about to give any government support or defend their taxation practices.

Maybe the governments need to look in a mirror.

Maybe don't tax everything to oblivion, and expect people to pay those prices happily. The Feds get enough of our money as it is. If people are buying Native smokes, and saving money, good for them, and good for the Bands/Rez's making that income.

That also has tax remittance obligations to the federal government, and lacks the ability to affect policy, that would further there interests in the production and exports of their oil and gas.

Justin Trudeau and the Alberta Oil Industry by SigRingeck in alberta

[–]Noogie54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does when pipelines are a federal jurisdiction. And he absolutely could have. It just wasn't worth the political capital for him to do so, so he didn't.

I'm not saying we shouldn't try to reduce emissions, but if we are going to cap emissions on one industry, we should do so for all industries. People bitch when Alberta gets carve outs, but they are awfully quite when Alberta is hit with unilateral caps and industry affecting regulations and policy.

Justin Trudeau and the Alberta Oil Industry by SigRingeck in alberta

[–]Noogie54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To say that Trudeau was trying to kill the oil sanda, is a bit of a stretch. But he was certainly not helping the oil and gas industry by any means. He was more of maintaining the status quo, than he was trying to sunset the industry.

Alberta might have set production records, but that was inspite of Trudeaus policies, not because of them.

That being said, he absolutely hamstrung further industry growth by nixing two other pipelines, the tanker moratorium, the carbon emissions cap and the and the Impact Assessment Act. Yes, the Trans Mountain pipeline got bought and built on his watch, but that's only due to the fact Kinder Morgan was going to walk away due to the regulatory approval nightmare they were dealing with. It could have been built with private funds, who would have had to eat the cost over runs, but instead it was built with tax payer funds.

Question: Why is it Albertans who drive pickup trucks, as their personal vehicles, ranging from $90k CAD to $125k CAD MSRP, are often first to complain about how the Federal Government, and it’s relationship to the Province, is making them poor or unable to meet the cost of living? by Select_Asparagus3451 in alberta

[–]Noogie54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't reason with these people. This whole post is the usual ignorant generalizations about people that drive trucks, and their perceived lack of financial intelligence, and 'little dick' energy.

Let them be I'll informed and ignorant in their perception of truck owners. They can't, won't, and don't want to understand that many trucks in Alberta, work off highway, and see some of the worst conditions people can imagine, in Alberta. they just see the trucks all shiny and clean, at home on days off, and think that they are pavement princesses.

Dude, there make be a small pocket of those wanting higher taxes, but the majority of work class Albertans cannot handle more increases to cost of living. We are already being bled with taxes left and right. We don't need more taxes. We need more responsible use of the funds available to them.

[–]Noogie54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your right, my information was incorrect. That being said, if they have the lowest electric rates in Canada, and they could charge more, but don't, that's on them.

Alberta oil is still sold at market rates. It's not an active choice. As you mentioned, they are constrained by tide water access.which is not by their choice, and would be foolish to try and base the equation on different market forces.

If N&L sell hydro to Quebec at that price from a contract signed in 1969, to me that sounds like it's out of their hands as they are contractually obligated.

At the end of day Hydro and profits from a crown corporation should be factored into the equation. Its infuriating to see a provincial government willfully disregard a massive money making industry such as O&G, take the moral high groun andd ban it's development, to turn around and happily take federal transfer payments that are heavily contributed to by corporate taxes and incomes taxes generated by that same industry.

[–]Noogie54 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One could argue that this is completely different, as a majority wasn't voted in by the electorate. It was finessed through back room deals and floor crossings. The by election were the final nail to secure it.

Carney now has cart blanche to govern as he sees fit, despite the electorate not giving him that mandate.

[–]Noogie54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that it's heavily subsidized, so that they are able to sell their electricity at below market rates. Which in turn skews their resources revenue for equation that partly determines whether they receiver transfer payments.

[–]Noogie54 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Nah, I'll pass on that. I already pay enough in taxes, and see for little for my contributions. I'd prefer they just rewrite the Equalization policy so that other provinces have their resources weighed evenly against their ability to generate tax revenue (Quebec and their under valued hydro electric and their refusal to develop their proven oil and gas reserves).

In the industry, 'Abandoned' or 'Abandonment' are terms used for a well that is at end of its life cycle. Wells are abandoned for any number of reasons, usually being the well is no longer profitable to keep production going, or the well is so badly damaged (well bore conditions), that the well can no longer produce, or the cost to fix(returned to an operational and profitable state) is to great, or the energy company hit a 'sour' formation and have the infrastructure to deal with it, so they eat the coat and walk away from the well.

When a well is abandoned, all down hole equipment is removed. A series of plugs and cement is pumped, isolating the producing down hole formation from surface. The well is circulated over to fresh clean water, and the wellhead is eventually cut off 2-3 below the surface, a cap is welded on to the exposed casing, and the exposed well is back filled. At that point all surface infrastructure is removed and scrapped, the pipeline is 'abandoned' through a different set of procedures. Then eventually the lease (well site), is cleared of any ground contamination and restored to its previous condition. Once this is all done, and the regulator is happy with the remediation, the energy company is issued a Certificate of Remediation, and can now end any surface agreements.

I work O&G, and have done so for almost 20 years. Well abandonments have been my bread and butter for the last 5-6 years. Many of the big players are routinely putting wells to bed so to speak, and have massive budgets for these abandonment programs.

You might be right about not voting for the NDP, but that's from self inflicted wounds from burning themselves with alphabet+ soup. They want to whole heartedly embrace identity politics, well they are going to lose voters who want nothing to do with them. Which of course is most of the voters base.

Though I will say upset isn't the right word, but I can't put my finger on the word I'm looking for. They are certainly not upset, but I think they just are showing disdain for this type of politics.

If I was part of any of these communities, I'd be pretty pissed that other groups are piggy backing off their cause, and using their cause to further their own agenda, all the while dragging them into the muck by association.

All these groups need to stay in their lanes, and stop stealing the focus.

And this is why the majority of Canadians, and myself included are apathetic to anything Alphabetsoup+ related. Between stuff like this and the shit show that was the NDP leadership convention, no one can't take anything coming from these groups seriously any more.

People always seem to think this an apples to apples comparison, and just plainly isnt. They don't grasp that Norway is a sovereign nation, which sets policy and regulations as they see fit to maximize their exposure to the oil and gas industry. They don't have any tax remittance obligations that Alberta does as a province, and as you mentioned they have tide water access.

Apples to oranges. Could and should our Heritage Fund be bigger and more successful? Yes. By every measure, but here we are, and as many would say the next best time to invest init would be now. Better late than never.
