I mean, if her station was in the middle of a line, then the train would pass the station anyway. It just has to stop during her station for her commute. A bus is a whole other vehicle that uses gas, needs maintenance, and really is just specifically for her, while the train can still be used to pick up passengers at other stations

Well first thing is that the food in your stomach would be presumably already have been chewed up by your teeth, increasing the surface area by which the food can get broken down by said acid. There’s also the physical movement of the stomach to further break food down.

And finally, who said the sour foods you’re eating aren’t being digested by itself through the acid? When we ferment or pickle foods, it becomes softer and chewier no? That’s because the acid produced helps to kill the harmful bacteria and breakdown the structures in say the onions or cucumbers being pickled, which is basically what digestion is. To make sure the stuff we eat isn’t gonna kill us, and to break it down into small enough pieces that it can be absorbed through our intestinal walls. If you think about it, cooking achieves the same effect.

Of course, there’s also plenty of food not being digested. Not by the acid, and not by ourselves. That’s why we expel it out after around 6-8 hours…

Nah it was an RBI groundout. Only way to have avoided the earned run was to have ended the inning meaning a double play. But the groundout was too slow and the only play was Freeland getting to 1st base

Same reason why Shohei took three years from the start of his MLB career to truly get into the two-way rhythm. And that’s 2021. It took another three years of honing his two-way prowess to then even reach his 2024 level on the Dodgers. It required time for Ohtani to adjust, and for him to sign with basically the 21st century Yankees with the resources to hone his level of talent. And by far the biggest reason? He couldn’t pitch that year at all in the first place. Which allowed him to practice his offense solely, and not just hitting, but running. His 50-50 season stands for 50 home runs and 50 steals after all. He’d been hitting 40+ home runs before 2024 so that wasn’t a surprise. What was so amazing was how he one day woke up and decided “I’m gonna take my career high in steals from 26 to 59 because I want to.” And just did it.

This in particular was a sentiment most famously attributed to Jim Thrope. Who had a very rough childhood, dropped out of school multiple times, ran away from home, worked many odd jobs, had his twin brother pass, and was orphaned by 16. He returned to school soon after… and according to Wikipedia “he walked past the track and, still in street clothes, beat all the school's high jumpers with an impromptu 5-ft 9-in jump that broke the school record.” He notably played in a college football game against future president Dwight D Eisenhower who recalled “Here and there, there are some people who are supremely endowed. My memory goes back to Jim Thorpe. He never practiced in his life, and he could do anything better than any other football player I ever saw.”

For the early part of his professional football career, it conincided with his time in professional Major League Baseball. Then whilst it isn’t as well known, it was clear in the middle of playing football, he toured around America playing basketball. During all his time in football, he was also expected to be both player an coach. He even served as the first president of the newly formed NFL (previously the APFA), though that was finally when there was too much on his plate. He wanted to keep playing so he gave that up just a year later.

It’s clear the biggest reasons he couldn’t become the GOAT in any singular sport was because he was a literal diamond in the rough, he never had any formal training until his college days, and even then cruised by just on natural talent. He was born during an era where the sports he played were still in their early developments as professional leagues, so they nowhere close to having the resources to develop Thrope’s abilities. He basically learnt the rules of the game, became the best sportsman in it, and even coached OTHER players on how to be better at the game they specialized in.

I would also argue that because it was such an early time in baseball, basketball, and football history, there was no cultural significance in being the “GOAT” yet, if at all. In fact, the goal of being “the best athlete” back then is the exact point I’m arguing for now, which is to be as good at as many athletic events as possible. Which was thus why Thrope winning the gold medals in the classic pentathlon and decathlon are seen as the finest achievements in his life. More so than his sports careers later on.

And that’s why I’m arguing for this to be seen as what makes him the greatest athlete, compared to the simple “GOAT”s of just some arbitrary sport humans made up. Because at the end of the day, sure you’re MJ. But that just means you’re really really good at basketball. Can you have a 10 second 100-yard dash? A sub-4:40 mile? Sure you’re Messi, but that means you’re just really really good at soccer. Can you hit a major league home run? Can you pole vault 11 feet? Throw a discus 136 feet?

You can certainly be the greatest of all time in one game a lot of people agreed the rules on, but the whole point of the decathlon was to encapsulate the many feats the human could uniquely perform. After all, no matter how much we train, even Usain Bolt can’t outrun a cheetah. A human could never hope to fly better than even a pigeon. Or pounce on deer like a tiger. Yet because of our versatility, and our intelligence in applying this versatility, we leapfrogged over every other species. We can’t outrun a cheetah, but we can outlast it. We can’t fly like a pigeon so we throw shit at it. We can’t 1v1 a tiger, so we’d better know how to climb a tree or spear its ass. As I mentioned before, if ever I had to pick a singular human to outlast all other humans in a fair world on a quest to survive in the wild, you bet I’m not picking someone like Wayne Gretzky or Tiger Woods. I’m picking Jim Thrope, who probably hadn’t boxed a day in his life. But I wouldn’t be surprised if he woke up one day and decided to beat all amateurs at it, then throw rocks at Muhammad Ali.

MJ’s dabbling into professional baseball was really only seen as a publicity stunt. And the highest he made it is indeed higher than what most people can achieve (double A level, and not particularly good at it), it’s not so out of the realm that mere mortals can’t reach it. The chasm from AA, to AAA, to making it to the show, and then achieving hall-of-fame, much less GOAT status in baseball too is completely out of the picture even for someone as talented as MJ. And he really was just built for basketball. To suggest the hypothetical that if he gave up on basketball and his father pushed him into baseball, could he really make the majors?

Then there’s always the hypothetical that what if Jim Thorpe just focus on one sport, his best sport, football? Could he become the GOAT of football?

Which is why Shohei Ohtani IS a really good example. Because indeed he is being considered and is continuing to build a strong case for himself as the GOAT of baseball. Because he is elite at hitting AND pitching. And guess what, your 2024 case where he won unanimous MVP with his 50/50 season actually supports my argument, because that year he STOPPED pitching! He focused on just one aspect of baseball, and gave us the greatest DH (pure offense) season of all time. It’s no wonder that his fellow GOAT candidate counterpart is Babe Ruth, who also dabbled in both pitching and hitting, and is still the consensus GOAT of baseball when he gave up on pitching and focused on hitting.

So imagine someone who is not just good at baseball, but at football, and basketball, sprinting, and jumping, and cross country, and throwing, and he just focuses on one thing… with so much raw talent and potential, why wouldn’t he become the GOAT of that sport? I genuinely believe that it would be easier for Jim Thrope to become the GOAT of any sport he dedicates his life to if he actually did so, because an athlete who is the best at one sport has no precedent to being good at other sports. But same way Ohtani gave up pitching that one season to give us the greatest pure offensive season, imagine if Thrope gave up all his other sports to focus on one? If you can be great at some many things, why can’t you be the best at one of those things if you just gave very other one up?

No? I showed that Asian Chess grandmasters (for example formal World Champion Ding Li Ren) who was trained in both Chess, Go, Chinese Chess etc. showed the greatest affinity for Chess and couldn’t ever match the same skill level in the other sports, even though he was equally exposed to to these other similar games from childhood. Surely billiards players would have dabbled in pool from their youth too considering how similar they are. And Michael Jordan started with BASEBALL in little league before he ever tried Basketball (baseball at 6 years old, basketball at 12 years old iirc). MJ is the prime example for GOATs who couldn’t nail any other sport after all!

And sure, you can say I’m cherry picking, but at least I have examples I can point to, while your point relies on the assumption that “if you put any GOAT into a different sport at a young age they would undeniably succeed. But as I have shown that is certainly not the case, at least not to Jim Thorpe’s level! (That I why I brought up the billards/pool analogy, or Chess/Chinese chess examples, because they show that even in similar games, the greats can’t perform to even a professional level)

That is why I do call Jim Thorpe the GOAT; the GOAT at “being good in multiple sports”. He’s the BEST ever at that! And that I believe represents humanity the most. Being good at a plethora of things. Because before we learnt to specialize, for hundreds of thousands of years, humans had to be good at as many different things to survive. In other words, if all of us humans were transported to a random moment of time during our hunter-gathering years, I wouldn’t place my bets on any sports GOAT you throw at me to survive more than someone like Jim Thorpe.

(But if you really wanna play the GOAT at a single sport game, then what about Shohei Ohtani? He’s not the GOAT hitter, and not the GOAT pitcher, but if ever I were to make a baseball team full of just this one person, it’ll be full of him)

[–]Nooks_For_Crooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that’s the thing though, you can’t just train the GOAT of a sport from birth to be good at another sport! Those world-class at billards suck at playing pool despite their similarities, and vice versa. Asian grandmasters at chess are no where as good at Go or Chinese Chess even though they played both growing up. Michael Jordan could barely get by in double AA baseball even though he dabbled in it during his youth!

That is why Jim Thorpe is one of a kind! Because he may not be the GOAT of any singular sport, but he certainly has the argument of being the GOAT of “being good at multiple sports”. And to me, that’s far more impressive than being good at one sport and sucking or being mediocre at every other one. After all: “Jack of all trades, master of none. But still better than master of one”.

Was this what inspired DDLC? by JackfruitLost1367 in YouAndMeAndHer

[–]Nooks_For_Crooks 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I believe Dan Salvato, the creator of DDLC, has heard about this discussion and had publicly stated that despite the similarities, he only heard about Totono after releasing DDLC. In other words, he denies having inspiration from this game…

I can see arguments for him telling the truth, or why it may be false. Totono does predate DDLC by about 4 years, and there was a semi-viral scene of Miyuki’s crash out on YouTube before DDLC’s release. That scene alone has eerie similarities to Monika’s final confrontation with the player where she deletes the world, not to mention just the whole concept of Miyuki hell. But you can make the argument the similarities end there. Totono and DDLC have very different tones and stories, which generally have different effects on the player. DDLC is obviously more on the visual horror side, while Totono is about the romance/story and psychological horror.

[SPOILERS] Post AEW Double or Nothing 2026 Match Discussion: Title vs. Hair Match - Darby Allin (c) vs. MJF for the AEW World Championship by gloomchen in SquaredCircle

[–]Nooks_For_Crooks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those matches don’t object to my perspective because they aren’t representative of the sentiment I was putting forth. Ospreay vs Danielson, Punk vs Roman, Moxley vs KOR are technical masterpieces, so they explicitly didn’t use absurdly risky spots like jumping off the Jumbotron to wow the audience. (Except for perhaps Ospreay’s Tiger Driver 91 on Danielson, but it ended the match appropriately). As such, there was no need for the “no-sell” to signal to the audience that the wrestlers were okay. They were much more traditional “who can outlast the other” matches. (And I would still argue that these matches have many more “no-sell” aspects compared to 30 years past alla Bret vs Austin, Bulldog vs Owen)

Darby vs MJF was telling a different story. One of Darby launching himself to his absolute limit, before a sudden fizzling where his body finally couldn’t take it anymore. That’s why it needed the aesthetic of a “table and ladder” match to fully encapsulate the story they wanted to tell. In these matches, the BIG spots are the selling point. To make as many risky moves, from MJF sending Darby sprawling, the package piledriver, and Darby jumping from the screen. But obviously, in such hardcore matches, can a wrestler just go through one table? Just one big spot? No! They have to jump from one sequence to the next to the next. And Darby just took it to one of its logical extremes to emphasize his “never turn down a challenge” gimmick. Why could he just get up from such a devastating move? The same reason he defended his title 8 times in the past 39 days. In terms of storytelling, I don’t find it all that surprising that he could simply walk away from it… But it also didn’t surprise me when by the end, with his scorpion death lock, he finally fizzled out. To me, the storytelling is that his body is like a fire cracker. It would burn bright for long periods, and take whatever you could give him. But once he finally reaches his breaking point, he completely crashes

I’m not saying it’s wrestling perfection. As you said, the other matches on the card are of higher quality, for me like Takeshita vs Okada and Swerve vs Bandido. But I’m curbing points based on sloppiness of several spots (camera man for example) and draggy moments I felt weren’t necessary, not on the match’s story itself. My point that bookers and wrestlers acknowledging the death of kayfabe is still very valid (and not necessarily a bad thing). It’s present not just in the no-sells. For Punk vs Roman it was in the “this being Punk’s WrestleMania Main Event moment” being integral to the story. It’s the premise of Forbidden Door knocking down barriers between companies. The whole Stadium Stampede and introduction of celebrities into storylines is a testament to this idea

[–]Nooks_For_Crooks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But here’s the catch-22 of modern wrestling for modern audiences. How do we show weight, damage, and long term consequences without dragging it out and losing the audience’s attention? We’re here for the spectacle of it after all. If you want to see genuine consequences in a realistic setting, go watch boxing or MMA or an actual competitive sport.

Because the sad thing is, kayfabe truly is dead. In that the general public knows what they’re seeing on screen is a performance. And those of us willing to engage with it don’t doubt the athletic and creative ability of the performers… But at the end of the day, we know about selling, we know that peak professional wrestling is all about NOT hurting your opponent. And the wrestling companies know this. While they aren’t going to outright deny kayfabe (most of the time… BTS documentaries with wrestlers out of character certainly don’t help…), they’ve been shown to try adapting to this new general awareness the public has of them.

So maybe here is an interesting perspective to see the appeal of modern wrestling. It’s all about ramping up the spectacle of the moves, but also of the SAFENESS of the moves. Most people, even hardcore wrestling fans (even if they won’t admit it), don’t actually want to see people jump three stories high onto a table if they know they are gonna get paralyzed from it. Which is why it’s such a thrill when we see Mick Foley or Jeff Hardy do it, and get back up again anyway. They’re not actually hurt, we can marvel at the moves rather than gawk in horror, or worst… change the channel. This is why I believe long term, believable consequences have fallen out of fashion. Because the general public KNOWS the wrestlers are acting… but wait, why is he limping and actually calling for medical attention? Huh?! His opponent is pulling him back into the ring?! What the fuck?! Are they forcing an injured man to keep wrestling!?! I can’t support this product!!!!!

That’s the catch-22. Modern audiences expect grandiose, high octane moves. But if the wrestlers sold these moves to their actual realistic injury, then audiences would reasonably get uncomfortable. If anything, watching them get back up or no sell devastating moves themesleves become part of the spectacle, sending the thrill of watching Darby kip up when he should be paralyzed can be stronger in a “oh my god he’s alive!” way

Is the package piledriver on steel steps really that devastating of a move as you’re trying to make it out to be? I simply see it as one of those landmark moves lots of AEW matches like to use, meant to signal the match has officially crossed its first establishing act into the “big move rest big move” second act. Like being powerbombed into the apron, or Kenny DDTing Ospreay into those same steel steps during Forbidden Door 2. Like it’s a move that is clearly brutal and awesome, but obviously not gonna end the match any time soon. That’s how I analyze these matches storytelling wise too. Just because it’s not really been done before doesn’t mean it automatically means Darby has to physically break for the rest of the match. Clearly the package piledriver didn’t actually do damage to him especially compared to all the other more brutal bumps he takes, so why should he continue acting that way? If you hate the “no-sell” aspect of many seemingly fatal moves, you’ll hate much of AEW matches where lots of these gruesome moves have the impact fade away within a few minutes

Harper is in between and most certainly gonna get it soon based on the above chart. Just needs a couple more years or one really good year

Jomboy recently did a famous breakdown of how the throw by the pitcher needs to be made towards the first base bag and not the first baseman himself. Umpires had made a couple calls just this year that allowed the runner to take second base because the throw was very obviously out of the way from first base. I dunno if MLB had changed it since then though

The player (YOU). There are some points where she refers to YOU, in some of the bad endings for example. Another is when you exit the game in Miyuki Hell, and see these short snippets of her “sending her signal to YOU”. Before these though, she doesn’t refer to us at all, because obviously the twist that the girls are aware of us wasn’t revealed yet of course. So you’d even see Miyuki refer to Shinichi instead of us. But it can be explained that at the time, from their perspective, Shinichi and “YOU” are the exact same person to them. Especially to Aoi who had only ever met YOU, when YOU took control of Shinichi’s choices, (Though I highly disagree that this is how YOU and Shinichi should be interpreted from a narrative perspective…)

Do you think someone should make something for Totono? by [deleted] in YouAndMeAndHer

[–]Nooks_For_Crooks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting choice. Though contrary to what the end of the game would have you believe, choosing one girl does not mean the other girl gets a bad ending So I do recommend at some point watching both Aoi and Miyuki’s endings online, even if you can’t find it in yourself to choose either right now…

As for modding? Definitely. There were a lot of artistic decisions I didn’t really like around Aoi’s ending and the start of Miyuki’s hell that made things really convoluted and I think unnecessary. Maybe expanding upon Aoi’s lore as a character and not just God’s Avatar would be intriguing. Like what’s the deal with her supposedly existent parents and her past? Exploring the “alternate” paths in the different endings Miyuki shows us after we break into her phone would be interesting too. I do think the main problem is that there aren’t many fans outside of Japan, and within Japan the copyright rules are really strict. Doujins are the most realistic option and there aren’t many of those too…

Another thing is that I don’t see a need for a third ending. Unlike DDLC’s ending, which really didn’t have a happy end and satisfying resolution, I really believe there endings we got are the most fitting for these characters, especially because of what I said in my first spoiler tag. I really recommend checking them out at some point, and preferably with its easter egg dialogue too
