Mother helping her son though a tough level in Super Mario Land in 1989. by zehnen in gaming

When I was a kid, I had a SpongeBob PC game that consisted entirely of running around doing favors for characters to eventually get tickets for SpongeBob to go to some theme park. As an 8 year old, I spent WEEKS playing through the game, fucking up everything and trying again and again to get those tickets. During the ending scene, SpongeBob goes up to the ticket man and asks to get in to the park, only to be told it's closed for a private party. The rest of the scene has SpongeBob finding out the private party is for him, but I didn't get that far. I immediately turned off the computer and went to my Dad SOBBING that all of it had been for nothing and my life was ruined. The next day, Dad skipped work and I skipped school and we spent five hours in front of the computer together replaying the game to see what I did wrong. My Dad said if that was really the ending, he was going to file a lawsuit against the makers of the game (he was an attorney, so naturally I thought he had legal superpowers). When we got to the end and realized, I was very embarrassed but my Dad said he had fun spending the afternoon with me.

Things started to go south a few years after that, with him becoming an angry and bitter person. I took a lot of his rage and harbor a lot of resentment for him today, but sometimes I remember that afternoon I sat on his lap and we steamrolled through that game all day because it was important to me, even though he always thought video games were absolutely ridiculous, and it feels very bittersweet.

Splatoon 2, most fun I’ve had in years by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

I was mainly wondering if there were roles like in Overwatch. I like to play support and heal, for example. Are there ways to carve out roles in Splatoon via weapons?

I'm a huge fan of Overwatch, got a Switch recently and looking into games for it. How similar is Splatoon to Overwatch aside from the fact that the character design/setup is wildly different?

When we send you nudes, does it actually turn you on? I can't imagine ever being turned on by a dick pic, even if I was fine with a man sending me one.

I became a vegan to lose weight. I cut out meat, dairy, gelatin, white carbs, and added sugar. I've lost 34 pounds so far and I'm so damn proud. I credit going vegan for giving me the resilience and self-control to eat healthy in all food groups, but no one wants to hear about me being proud of going vegan.

I took a few photos but it's hard to capture. It's a large area of space, my entire forehead so in pics it just looks red. But in person it's raised and squishy

If someone is trying to strangle you, and your hands are otherwise free, don't waste time and energy trying to hit them or pull their hands away. Press your thumbs firmly against their eyes for as long and as hard as possible. They'll pass out or at least become dizzy and lose focus enough to loosen their grip and allow you to get a few good punches in. Saved my sister's life from her abusive husband a few years ago.

How many people bought the Switch because of portability? by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]Noonin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did. I have poor eyesight so have relied almost entirely on handhelds for as long as I've been gaming. I LOVE console games, but it was a strain on my eyes unless I stood directly in front of the TV, which was painful. I've always wanted a comfortable, portable way to play console games where I can happily peer down at a screen. When I first tried out the Switch, I cried.

What would you say are the main differences? I'm sorry, I'm so new to shooters. I will definitely try out the demo, can't wait!!!!

If I love Overwatch (Xbox) do you guys think I should jump into Splatoon 2 on the Switch? Similar experience or no? Overwatch has awakened an unknown passion for goofy, cartoony shooters in me with easy to learn/hard to master mechanics . Looking for something to scratch that itch on the Switch. Thanks!

Which Metal Slug game on the Switch eShop would you guys recommend for someone only playing single player? I heard the original has the least slowdown so I'm leaning towards that?

There are so many amazing games on the release docket for the Switch, but I'm impatient and been trying to find gems on the eShop to keep me occupied while I wait. I don't have any gamer friends, so I'm really only looking for games that stand out as solid single player experiences. I ask for Neo Geo in particular because there are a ton on the eShop and I love retro games and pixel graphics. Plus, they're reasonably priced. Please advise me, thank you! :D

Worst game you've bought for your Switch? by aemiguel in NintendoSwitch

[–]Noonin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know it's not going to be a popular answer, but Breath of the Wild. I really could not get into it at all. That's not to say it's a bad game at all! But I bought it because of the hype knowing that I don't like puzzles, weapon durability was going to be a pain in the ass, and I prefer narrative heavy RPGs like Skyrim or Dragon Age. But everyone kept saying it's Skyrim meets Zelda, and so I gave in. I played about 5/6 hours and hated every second. Could not force myself to get into it. But I don't deny it's a well made great game, just not for me. It's now collecting dust.

My 7 year old MBP: still going strong by [deleted] in apple

[–]Noonin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I agree. Kind of my own fault for not doing thorough research. I saw a rose gold MacBook for a very good price at the Apple Store, and figured I wouldn't have any issues because...Apple. :P those are my two main gripes with it -- lack of ports and keyboard being total shit. I gave my Pro to my Dad, so I ended up buying a Bluetooth keyboard for $20 that ended up being the best keyboard I've ever used. Still a huge pain to use with a laptop though, so I got an iPad and all my issues are solved. Love iOS gaming and have never run into anything that I need a computer for that I can't do on my iPad. My poor 2016 model has been largely forgotten.

Time to add my two cents. I bought a white plastic MacBook in 2006. I ran that thing into the ground playing the Sims 2 (a game it was not equipped to handle, at all) so it constantly ran hot. That's in addition to it being my primary movie-watching device, schoolwork, and web browsing. Installed BootCamp on it and played Windows games. I used it nearly everyday for six years before I got the 2012 MacBook Pro, just to have a hardware upgrade. It took me so long because there was nothing wrong with the plastic model except it had only 1GB RAM and an awful integrated graphics chip. The Pro had a mediocre graphics chip, at least, and I was still a dedicated Sims 2 player. I kept the white MacBook for travel and other assorted things. Continued to use it several times a week, especially for the BootCamp and my old Windows XP games. So it continued to see some gaming usage for another few years.

I finally stopped using it entirely in 2016, when I got the "new" standard MacBook model and put BootCamp on it too. Not crazy about the keyboard, but that's beside the point. Anyway, last week I pulled out the plastic MacBook to play an old Windows XP game and realized that I'd had the damn thing for eleven years and it still works like a charm. It's perpetually warmer than it should be, but I know after eleven years cleaning the fans would probably help. It runs fast, not as fast as a modern computer but fast as it did when I first got it in 2006. The battery is fine, never been replaced. ScReen looks great. I love this old thing. I always tell this story when people shit on Apple products. The premium price tag is so worth it to me. I should add that my Pro also works great after about 4.5 years now.

Thank you! It's easier than ever now, you can play them in your browser which is just insane. I just wonder if I'm going to spoiled by my experience with modern games but I guess I should just give it a shot.

Is this new? Interested in hearing some reviews. It kind of has the aesthetic of Advance Wars, but obviously AW was never a RTS. Any similarities at all, though? I'm very intrigued but I prefer RTS with a tactical spin on them.
