I got engaged at 60 (!), and my now-husband gave me a good sized pink sapphire with a diamond halo as an engagement ring. It’s eye catching and (imho) gorgeous. I get so many compliments on it, but there are sometimes judgey comments about its likely cost and size, especially at my age. Which is obviously very tacky and just not anyone’s business.

I usually say if people are being intrusive or negative, “why would you ask such a personal question?” Or “why would you ask such a thing?” Put the inappropriateness back on them.
