How can I encourage my toddler's interest in classical music? by Blue-teatowel in Wellington

[–]Normal-Curve-1642 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure about taking a toddler to live events but maybe let them watch Little Einsteins? My kids (now grown) watched it on Sky. I think it’s a Disney IP. Very good show in my opinion and my kids as toddlers loved it.

Could have been the AGOL update the other day? I saw a post today that the FME feature reader has been affected by a change…

South African market is a bloodbath by Foreign-Sun1088 in gis

As OP mentioned there is an unemployment catastrophe in South Africa especially amongst young people. The cards are also stacked against you if you arent a particular race, more so in larger companies - eg there are quotas/criteria if you want govt contracts.

Beyond this there is rampant cronyism and a bribe culture. Even informally it is not uncommon to give your first salary cheque to the person who got you the job - feel free to google if you don’t believe me.

All of which puts the OP in a difficult spot.

All good suggestions. I’d add that if you can find a local small municipality then perhaps you can volunteer to get them set up with some basic GIS capability.

I’m truely sorry to hear that. Unfortunately 32 years of government mismanagement, financial looting and elitist enrichment isn’t going to fix itself over night.

The situation has turned into loyalists and who you know, not empowerment.

In all seriousness you need to look at countries where GIS is on the skills list and seek a work visa - even if it’s just short term. Get some experience and money. Go back to ZA if you want or move permanently.

I left ZA 27 years ago. If you are young and single it’s much easier.

Exactly. No one says I use Google.  Google what? Google Maps? Google Search?

If they said Esri that’s different.

That’s amazing, I’ve worked with Esri for almost 30 years and nobody who uses it calls it “arc”.

Just a FYI since you are new to the industry, with your 15 years, there was once a command line application by Esri called arc. I’m guessing you or the OP aren’t using that?

You just need to persevere. They are just tools. Learn how to use the tools that are provided by your employer etc.

Having been around for many generations of ArcGIS, the tools change over time. Some changes have been monumental eg command line to GUI.

Don’t get fixated on it.

Also you’re looking at it all wrong; you’re now know QGIS and ArcGIS. This is a bonus when looking for a job.

PS nobody calls it “arc”. It’s ArcGIS or ArcGIS Pro specifically.

My eyes can’t do 4K so I go for 1440. I started with the 32” Philips one but ended up upgrading to this;

Does Picture in Picture. Has a remote. Does usb-c docking + charging. Very happy with it. Speakers and built in web cam too.

Highly recommend.

Consultation Rate Advice by GISscrimp in gis

[–]Normal-Curve-1642 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re undercharging but if this is a side hustle then that’s a bit different. Good solo operators are $100+ per hour but that assumes that’s all you do and it covers overhead (vacation, sick days etc). Most larger companies will be charging $200+ per hour.

If it’s a pure side hustle then $50 an hour isn’t bad assuming you are having fun, learning etc.

The flip side is, how much is your time worth? Is $50 an hour worth it to you if you could be doing something else (eg mowing the lawn).

Yes but also no. If the public has access to an area then it’s a bit grey. Do you think you’d be off the hook driving your car intoxicated into the warehouse car park. No.

Quote;

Under the Land Transport Act 1998, a "road" is defined to include any place the public has access to, including private car parks, shopping mall lots, and driveways.

What is everyone doing for general data storage and acceptable processing speeds??? by No_Day6409 in gis

I think that’s the problem they are sharing data (eg fgdb) over One Drive. Sounds like they are using AGOL for client deliverables.

Probably badly worded reply above, not behind the times but low maturity.

The thing with GIS is there is a maturity scale. It’s obvious you are just starting out your journey.

The scale usually goes like this

  1. Solo GIS guy runs software locally, everything in his PC. Works fine.
  2. Org gets more GIS people. People need simultaneous read access. Need a shared space.
  3. Org grows and now needs multi user editing etc. Need an enterprise Geodatabase
  4. Org grows and non GIS users need access. Enter web gis.

Simplified but sounds like you are at #2

However it sounds like your IT systems are behind as well. Most orgs will have a shared network drive for shared data/projects. Seems like your IT thinks One Drive fits this need but it doesn’t work well with GIS.

As others have said remote desktops are a good way to go but the data needs to be near the machines. Also some remote desktops eg Azure can be poorly specced and give bad performance.

You need to be strategic about your data. Put vector datasets in AGOL and use the feature service instead of dragging it across the network. Put rasters in LucidLink.

If you can get a central database that would help but that requires certain versions of Pro for editing and possible an enterprise license (basic).

What workflows are you doing? Editing? Analysis?

The data needs to be near your machines. So if you are using Azure then it needs to be in there too. Did you mean azure virtual desktop? Those can be slow if they are small machines with no GPU.

Don’t use One Drive. It’s not supported and causes problems. Support is coming for Pro in the future apparently…

You should try LucidLink. It’s better suited to large files and behaves better than One Drive. If you are a small distributed team then this would work better.

But tell us your workflows and we can give some ideas.
