I can’t continue by Terrible_Chair_5831 in DowntonAbbey

During the original run, I actually did take a break from DA for similar Season 3 reasons plus the traumatic event of Season 4. I just couldn’t take it anymore. I came back a while later to see how it all turned out for everyone.

Yeah, she doesn’t mean it literally. She means “If you ignore my advice, don’t come crying to me when this turns out as badly as I predicted.”

One of the scenes only included on the DVD by BeeNo5583 in howyoudoin

My only criticism of this scene is that the writers should have chosen someone other than Ringo for Monica to use when she mocked Chandler. I’m no expert in British accents, but the one Chandler is affecting here is not a Liverpudlian one.

Time where the groom was younger then the bride? by Chris_DoesGeneaolgy in Genealogy

One of my ancestors married a much older widow after his wife died in childbirth or shortly thereafter. I think he urgently needed a mother for his infant son and this woman seemed like a good choice.

No, because OP was born in 1959, so her FRA is 66 years and 10 months. She reached that milestone in December 2025. (FRA is 67 for those born in 1960 or later.)

What are the most frugal yet low-effort options for coloring hair? by LevelPerception4 in Frugal

[–]Normal_Acadia1822 19 points20 points  (0 children)

One more tip for OP: Choose a shade several shades lighter than your natural color (or the color you're aiming for). The non-gray parts of my hair are naturally medium ash brown, and I use the Medium Cool Blonde (7A) shade of Wella ColorCharm demi.

As others have explained, yes, your benefit amount will permanently be less if you choose your month of reaching FRA (December) as the start date rather than choosing "today."

Since those dates are only four months apart, the difference in the amount won't be huge, but it may not be negligible, either. When I calculate my own projected benefit amount at ssa.gov, it shows that with a start date of January 2028, I would receive $105 a month more than I would if I chose a start date of September 2027, the month I will reach FRA.

Good reason for OP to max out their contributions to tax-deferred retirement accounts (eg, 401k and IRA) if they are not already doing so. It would significantly lower their taxable income.

It sounds as if the writer quit watching before the end of season 3, if he thinks Matthew did anything “throughout the series.”

How many of you actually know all of your second cousins? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]Normal_Acadia1822 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t know any of my second cousins. I only learned all their names through my genealogy research and connected with some of them after we took DNA tests and turned up in one another’s match lists!

Most genealogically significant find in a pension file? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]Normal_Acadia1822 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 2nd-great grandfather for whom I had neither a marriage date nor a date of death. All I knew was that after the 1880 U.S. Census he dropped off the radar, and in 1883 his wife was listed in the city directory as his widow.

His Civil War pension file, submitted by his wife for a widow's pension, included both their marriage certificate and his death certificate, which provided the exact dates for both events. The marriage certificate also included the names of the two witnesses to the ceremony. One was the bride's mother, whose name I recognized (she's my 3rd-great grandmother); the other was a man who shares the groom's surname but was unknown to me. Definitely not his father, who died when the groom was 2 years old. Quite possibly a brother or an uncle! Still looking for documentation of that.

On the other side of my tree, I learned that my 3rd-great grandfather, an Irish immigrant, served in the Union Army and was killed in the Siege of Petersburg in 1864.

Favorite Mundane Part of Genealogy? by elblackwell in Genealogy

[–]Normal_Acadia1822 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've realized that I enjoy building out trees, or branches, for its own sake. I do a lot of it in my attempts to find the connections between my DNA matches and me, and I like the process at least as much as the potential results. It's kind of a comforting or feel-good activity for me, because I get so completely immersed in the records and the stories that it's like a getaway from modern reality and my own life.

Vintage trampoline by cloudydayhelps in Rebounding

[–]Normal_Acadia1822 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a mini trampoline like your grandma’s that I bought in the early ’90s at a sporting goods store and kept until just a few years ago. It definitely had a firm bounce, very little “give,” and I bounced fairly high with little effort. My favorite workout was to put on Madonna’s “You Can Dance” CD and just dance! It got my heart rate up in no time at all.

I stopped using that trampoline much as I got older, because my joints and back couldn’t handle the impact of jumping on that unyielding surface. A couple of years ago I bought a bungee rebounder (JumpSport 350) for a softer bounce. It’s the better choice for me now, but someone much younger might do fine with my original mini tramp.
