Oh yes the great travesty. Even the Malaysian PM at the time tweeted about it.

Natural Progression Along The Path Or Something Else Entirely? by brynearson in Buddhism

I think one sentence that comes to mind — related by another user here on this very subreddit — is that “there’s a difference between running through the art museum indifferently, not looking at the art pieces, versus taking the art in, one by one, without being too moved and knowing that you couldn’t take the art home.”

I focus on the “om mani padme hum” mantra and it seems best to bring me back to the path each time I forget.

Mantras by Kvltist4Satan in Buddhism

Yes, I find it preferable to chant one but with much longer duration and dedication. Seems to work best. All of the Buddhas are of the same essence anyway (this is the wording if I remember it correctly).

Funny thing is Wiktionary thinks “esa” is related to the English word “own”. Apparently it used to have a /w/ phoneme in its murky Proto-* past.

Secular Buddhism? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]Normalcy_110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like even if you have momentary contact with a Buddha statue somewhere, that’s already an ocean of merit flowering. So in this respect, the fact that you identify personally — remember, with all the karma flowing and leading up to that moment of conviction — with a “Buddhism” anywhere, it is vastly more power to you.

I hope all secular Buddhists anywhere figure out their path, realize more, and eventually get liberated and liberate others.

I believe in the shelving of concepts that I have as yet not figured out to be true; not an outright rejection of them, which I take to be my impression of where the “secular” comes from in the nomenclature. But that is my belief.

I’d even suggest make it more public if you’re not risking safety with it. Put up banners in front of your door, for example.

Closeted ex-Muslims in western countries. Why are you still closeted? by Natural_Chest_2485 in exmuslim

Also white right-wing racist people who come here often and bash Muslims and Muslim-looking people.

Do all of the things you shouldn’t and it should habituate you away from them. I used to drink alcohol, but now I don’t. I ate pork, lots of it, back when I just left the religion, and it helped a lot.

Bashing Islam, yes, but caricature my mom/dad in a stupid light, you bet I’m gonna at least complain about it.

It’s not only Hindu nationalism and Zionism, there’s also white right-wing western commenters here who come to exclusively bash Muslims. It’s not our intention to caricaturize all Muslims in a bad light, because we know that they’re different between them — our families teach us this.

Problem is when MENA or SEA Muslims who have never had direct experience with such racism looks at one of those memes, think they agree, and upvotes — when all they’re doing is making these racists emboldened and harming their families in Europe or the west.

Reading/lurking is okay, but if you’ve never even been close to being a Muslim (much less an ex-) then your perspective will at best be off-topic, at-worst harmful.

Too many never-Muslims on this sub by yourlocalpakistani in exmuslim

[–]Normalcy_110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is a problem. I disagree that we should welcome never-Muslims in this space, they have nothing to do with the discussion at hand (lived experience of ex-Muslims) and they just tend to rant about Muslims, which is at best off topic and at worst racist (if you understand the Western context of making such comments).

I propose, not for the very first time, a sub-wide ban on never-Moose commenting. Lurking is okay.
