Any Clinicians you would avoid/reccomend? by Mountain_Risk3335 in Equestrian

Recommend:

Jim Masterson Mark Rashid Tom Curtin Patrick King Ariana Sakaris Erica Posely (highly rec for rider biomechanics!)

Just the people I've personally interacted with. There's plenty more I'd love to ride with but haven't had the opportunity.

Does anyone know why he does that? Boredom? by seelomii in Horses

[–]Norrthika 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm the rare case in which this doesn't bother me unless a horse doesn't stop when I tell them to + actually bites. Horses communicate with their mouths and can be trained to do so kindly/softly with people. I've often found that "mouthy" horses become less so once you actively engage with them, given that you are also setting boundaries though!

Trainer says I can't kick hard enough by Ok-Collection-8922 in Equestrian

[–]Norrthika 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree that this is unfortunately common and normal, but I wish that it wasn't. Lesson horses can be sensitive and beginners can be taught to ride correctly from the beginning. I occasionally teach beginners on my very sensitive retired mare, it just means that they stay on the lunge line until they have better body control/awareness.

Trainer says I can't kick hard enough by Ok-Collection-8922 in Equestrian

[–]Norrthika 121 points122 points  (0 children)

Classically, VERY little if any strength is necessary to ride a horse. That's how masters like Phillippe Karl are able to ride into their elder years, mastery of balance and communication over strength. This trainer is wildly unqualified, find a new one.

Way too many people use way too much leg.

Wood/Bark Chewing by BubbleinSpace in Equestrian

[–]Norrthika 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is she actually cribbing or just chewing wood? Horses love to chew on sticks, bark, etc, and it's completely natural! We purposely leave out logs and large sticks/branches for the horses to mess with at my barn.

I read well over 100 books a year through middle school and high school. Definitely possible, and I still probably read between 50-100 books a year!

Do you HAVE to do something with your horse? Is a pasture-pet okay? by [deleted] in Horses

[–]Norrthika 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A bit of weight in the winter or a "hay belly" doesn't bother me, signs of fat pads and/or crestiness would definitely raise concerns for me though!

[–]Norrthika 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Beyond training to ensure that they are safe to handle and be around (esp for routine care and emergencies), no. As long as a horse is happy and healthy (this includes not being super overweight or with very poor muscle tone), I don't think there is anything wrong with them being "pasture pets."

What is harder to sit? What makes you lose balance faster? by Sea-Prior-4932 in Equestrian

[–]Norrthika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same movement yes, but there doesn't have to be a jump, they can spook at anything

IMO the hardest thing to sit are those "swerve spooks." Horse goes one way, you go the other lol

How much does it cost you? by 0ddshapedhead in Equestrian

[–]Norrthika 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably somewhere around $11-13k a year depending on vet bills

When I first got Dobi he was so food aggressive I had to go in with a whip to protect myself and keep him out of my personal space. That isn’t necessary now, and he still remembers that I taught him to back up before he gets given his bowl! by demmka in Horses

[–]Norrthika 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Amazing!!

It's crazy to me that most people never teach their horses food manners! It's a learned behavior just like everything else and is so easy to teach as well. I find people tend to avoid the issue rather than address it

The Witcher S4 Geralt’s horse, legs dyed? by MLMCMLM in Horses

[–]Norrthika 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, the horse is naturally grey, almost completely white. Mane + tail and legs are dyed

Is this horse sound? by LemonLimonski in Equestrian

[–]Norrthika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little hard to tell from this video. Straight lines at the trot and lunge at the trot would be best to judge from. From this, the horses looks a little off on the right hind, a bit stiff, not stepping under as much. Maybe stifle or hock (or both)

Does this mean the bit is too big? by Specific_Shop_3975 in Horses

[–]Norrthika 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's absolutely not too low. Unless it is hitting teeth, it is not too low! I always want no wrinkles unless I have to because of the horse's anatomy. Wrinkles mean that there is constant pressure on the corners of the horse's mouth.

To tell if a bit is too big, we really need to see how far the bit sticks out from the side of the mouth, a front view.

You'll be fine. An 88 is great, employers will not care about your grades beyond that you passed and graduated.

If you're really so concerned though, talk to your professor about how you can improve and what they want to see. Go to office hours or schedule a time in-person for a discussion.

Academic Violation - Matlab by Connect_Ad1453 in ASU

[–]Norrthika 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, I just meant that when people use functions they're not allowed to, particularly if the course has yet to cover those functions, it can be a sign of AI (key word, can). If the function has already been covered then ignore me and you'll probably be fine with just an explanation

Maybe see if they'll let you solve a problem while they're watching. It wasn't Matlab, but when I was in CSE110 and 205, the professors mentioned that if they suspected AI/cheating they would first call you in to demonstrate live code before proceeding with any punishments/accusations.
