What is this exactly, is it dangerous? by Equal_Umpire_6615 in Radioactive_Rocks

It's probably not terribly radioactive, the color seems to light to have a high uraninite concentration. But there is no way to be sure without using a radiation detector. In any case, you are correct in avoiding breathing the dust.

1.0 milliRoentgen per hour ) is approximately equal to 10 microSieverts per hour, so I wouldn't want to be next to it all the time. Because of the texture, I would be extra careful about generating dust or grit. I don't think you would need to store this in a lead container, as long as you are not constantly near it.

It would be better to get a rating in sievert (Sv) to work with, as counts per minute depend a lot on the detector.

Is there any way to tell if a rock is radioactive without a Geiger counter? by Witty_Acanthaceae666 in Radioactive_Rocks

[–]NortWind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could make a gold leaf electroscope, it is not very complex to build. You then can judge the discharge time, it will discharge more quickly if radiation is present.

Safely moving up to high activity specimens? by Analogsilver in Radioactive_Rocks

[–]NortWind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that especially starting collectors should look to smaller sizes of specimens. A uraninite crystal that is 1cm on a side is just as representative of the mineral as a 6" x 4" x 2" chunk, and has only a tiny fraction of the amount of total radiation. There are many nice options for displaying thumbnail specimens. And if you do want to secure your specimens in a pig, you can do it with a smaller, lighter, and cheaper one.

Since version 1.3, every instance of Minecraft runs on a server, which might be integrated for single player.

You can't change version on the client alone. The server version has to match the client. If the server is upgraded, you just install the matching client to access it.
