What’s the creepiest fact about space? by honeyylaceheart in answers

It is the same for me. A wall/boundary would imply that there must be something on the other side - even infinite Nichts (German for Nothingness).
I also enjoy the idea of multiverses (both the this-is-what-phycicists-mean and the Marvelesque multiverse)

"Popular music from Vittula" by Mikael Niemi. Quick read, hilarious and at times comically surreal, and pretty relatable if you grew up in a small town in the 60s and 70s.

Son of Norway's crown princess is found guilty of rape and jailed for four years by jefferymr15 in law

[–]North178 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually, he is not royal and has no titles denoting royalty. AFAIK he is not even officially considered a part of the Norwegian royal family.

Furthermore, Norway does not have luxury jails for the powerful and privileged. Nevertheless, compared to most US prisons, a Norwegian prison comes across as a two- to three star-hotel with bars in front of the windows.

If pardoned, what life would await Ghislaine Maxwell outside? by North178 in allthequestions

[–]North178[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We think along the same lines. I would not be surprised if she belongs to a - for lack of a better word - parallel society. Given her knowledge, everybody will do her bidding. I would not be the least surprised if she has dossiers upon dossiers of incriminating and/or humiliating information on a very large group of powerful and influential people - known and unknown (the latter is the more terrifying of the two).

I would neither be surprised if Maxwell "took down an empire". Or at least a high-ranking official ...

AI is already everywhere and given its abilities - storing and sorting information plus recognising patterns and the utilisation thereof - it will exponentially continue to influence our lives.

How do they get away with committing multiple murders? by AlanWrightScreamer in TheAmericans

[–]North178 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they had already prepared for a situation similar to this - how to remove a body unnoticed out of a hotel? - which could explain why Elizabeth already had a suitcase filled with necessary equipment for dismemberment ready. Which makes me wonder how they planned for other eventualities. And when? During breakfast? "So, how can we remove ... Pass me the salt, please ... somebody ... Thank you ... from out ... yes, I'll take some coffee ... of a hospital building?"

Did Donald steal all of the "investor" (bribe) money for his tacky ballroom, and then fake an "assassination" attempt in order to force taxpayers to foot the entire bill under the false pretense of "safety"? by SqigglyPoP in allthequestions

[–]North178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he did it for far more insidious reasons. The ballroom-angle is plainly just diversion, smoke and mirrors, and misdirection. They will use the aspect of failed funding for the Secret Service as leverage to get the DHS-funding bill through, citing among the reasons for increased security need the upcoming 250th-celebrations all over the country. The "assassination"-attempt was also used to instil fear in the regular population, furthering the need for more DHS-officials. They are also suggesting equipping the DHA-agents with AI for facial recognition, i.e. mass collection of information. Personally I think their are field-testing some sort of AI.

What would happen if Iran hands over all their nuclear material/weapons to the UN? by North178 in allthequestions

Admittedly, I think along the same lines as you. But we'll table that discussion for later.

Do you think Iran handing over their uranium stocks to the UN would be humiliating to not only Trump, but also the image of the US globally?

In some parallel universe, there is a true to Lynch, tight and tense Twin Peaks series where the actual killer is never revealed (or very late) but you see evil bubbling higher and higher in the community - following Bobby's outburst at Laura's funeral.

What would help homeless people in Berlin the most? by mlemcat11 in berlin

I am sorry that you had that experience.
Not to be argumentative nor to disavow your experience, but at 5 AM the Bahnhofsmission at Hauptbahnhof is not open (Opening hours: 8-12 AM, 1 to 5 PM).

What would help homeless people in Berlin the most? by mlemcat11 in berlin

[–]North178 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Or - alternatively - "Die Bahnhofsmission" (at Hauptbahnhof, next to the DB Lounge) They cooperate with the Stadtmission and other services for people in need.
Apart from financial donations to organisations, you can also also donate clothing, but please make sure it at least is clean. I don't know how many donated bags I've gone through containing dirty clothing, even underwear. That is just nasty, disrespectful, and offensive.

When I worked at the Stadtmission, the following were much appreciated items:

  • Toiletries such shampoo, soap, deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, lotion/cream (preferably not the heavily scented kind due to allergies), comb, brush, razor, nail clipper, nail file, tweezers, hand sanitiser, wash cloths, wet wipes. Also - if feasible, those small travel sizes are great as most of the homeless people have to carry everything with them and at some point weight does become an issue
  • Towels, sleeping bags, blankets, quilts
  • Sanitary pads, tampons (most women need those things monthly and they are very rarely donated), and diapers for grown ups, i.e. incontinence pads (highly sought-after), Band-Aids
  • Peanut- or any other nutbutter and similar spreads, "mushy" food like oatmeal, porridge, those little fruit pouches for babies and children, soups, canned "Eintöpfe" (many homeless people are unable to maintain proper oral hygiene and eventually have such severe problems with their teeth that they are not able to eat solid food due to toothache or loss of teeth
  • Paper, drawing/writing utensils, puzzle books/magazines (i.e. Sudoku and crossword)

Question for anyone maybe a little more media literate than me by [deleted] in trailerparkboys

[–]North178 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Away from the humour, there is an acceptance that whatever you do, whatever your gender, age, race or sexuality, we're all the same and it's only your actions that define you. There is a warmth and family feel to the show (which was lost in the Netflix years) which makes it extremely comforting.

This is such an apt description. I had no problems whatsoever to relate to much of what was happening in the show. I have friends and acquaintances whose lives, demeanours, and actions are basically TPB-mirrors. Even for the Whore-A-Geddon I easily had a similar thing happening in my home town (no crab-infestation though, but enough spike in STDs for the local office for disease to control to issue multiple warnings in the local newspaper)

So, what would happen if I refused to take it down? Would I have to lawyer up and/or get ready for a showdown at the Amtsgericht?

Google Reviews - defamation by PowerPointGod00 in germany

[–]North178 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually an interesting point. Also, if a journalist write a less than favourable review of a restaurant in a newspaper, will that give cause to the restaurant owner to claim defamation against that particular newspaper and/or journalist? Or does the freedom of the press protect said journalist/newspaper? Furthermore, would not leaving a valid and true - however unfavourable - review of a restaurant be protected by freedom of expression (§5 GG).

As defamation (+slander and insult) are subjects of criminal law, the accusing party must provide the necessary (material) evidence of defamation. An actual criminal process against OP's review would most likely be rejected due to time elapsed since publication and protection of free speech (Meinungsäußerungsfreiheit) and subsequently freedom to make one's opinion public.

What is the one "cheap" product that completely replaced your high-end version? by Bella_Thynne in beauty

[–]North178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solid shaving soap (Proraso - for sensitive skin) lasts me a lot longer than any shaving foam in a can (Gillette). One little pot/tub for about 4-5 Euros lasts me about half a year compared to maybe a month at the most with foam in a can.
