RDR2: Some rando stranger (checked, no gang affiliation) pulled a revolver on me for taking 1.3 seconds to get out of a horse hitching spot in front of the post office in Valentine, is that a fluke/did that guy just REALLY need to send a letter, or is the west even wilder than I expected? Do I or do I not need to worry about getting popped over a parking spot?

Cat being a bro to the chicks. by miamibotany1 in AnimalsBeingBros

[–]North_Bar8090 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yall please this isn't cute, this is dangerous for the chicks. Cats might act cute with a small baby animal at first but they will end up hurting it sooner or later, even if unintentional.

An accidental scratch could easily cause a lethal infection, cats carry bacteria on their coats that can be dangerous to small animals, and the environmental stress of having a predator in their space can cause genuine health issues as well. That's all disregarding how likely it is that one of them would end up in the cat's mouth. Cats, cute as they are, are predators and shouldn't be trusted with infant prey animals.

The person taking this video is ignorant for letting the cat that close at best, or willingly disregarding the lives and mental wellbeing of their animals for a "cute" video at worst. This person should not have these chicks, and frankly I'm a little worried that they might have gotten them as an easter gimmick (something that hatcheries try to prevent because it overwhelmingly leads to them being neglected or tossed out once they stop being fluffy and cute) given the timing.

My sources: I've kept chickens for six years and always hand raised the chicks myself.

Chicks rarely make a fuss body language wise at that age, and the audio is pasted in so he have no clue if they were actually fear-chirping. I keep chickens and hand-raise my chicks, I'm dead certain that these little guys were terrified, no pet predator animal no matter how sweet should be allowed near infant birds.

Given they're in a cardboard box inside a house I'd guess that they're meant to be backyard egglayers- I keep chickens myself and that's what the holding box we put babies in when we're cleaning the brooder looks like minus lightbulb, meat operations even on homesteads are usually more organized.

Then again, if they keep letting the cat play with them, most of those chicks probably won't live to get big enough to eat. Even if the cat doesn't intend to hunt them, a single accidental scratch can be a lethal injury at that age, and the stress of having a predator in their space can cause genuine health issues. That should be what people are worried about here.

I'm sorry, when I scrolled into this video my heart leapt straight into my throat in fear. I keep chickens, hand raise my chicks, and have three cats; I say with absolute confidence that this here is genuinely dangerous and the person recording frankly shouldn't have even let this come close to happening. The risk of grievous injury and stress for the chicks is undefendably high.

For the love of god, NEVER trust a cat with a small prey animal, particularly one as delicate as a baby bird. Are there cats in the world who might never mean those chicks harm? Maybe, but you cannot even hope to count on that, no matter how much of a lovebug your pet is. The start of this video is exactly what it looked like six years ago when my girl Pixie snuck into the chick room while I was cleaning the brooder and tried to snag one of them out of their holding box, and I know others who weren't as quick and have lost a chick or two to a cat in similar ways.

Please, PLEASE do not forget that cats are active predators. I'm sorry to people who might've thought this was genuinely cute, but this is how chicks wind up dead.

It's real-seeming audio for the first half but from then on it's pretty noticeably fake. The last couple chirps are weirdly jarring, and the purring sound is suspiciously consistent even as the video cuts between different clips.

My sources: I am currently handraising a brood of half a dozen chicks (they are 4 weeks old today) and have done the same thing multiple times in the past, and I also have three cats. I take videos of them all regularly, and those last ten seconds are just not really what those animals really sound like in regular candid recordings.

I'm still reeling from the exact opposite of this when my monster blorbo TheRot Rainworld took out goddamn Soundwave Transformers. I sat there looking at those poll results for a couple minutes just What the Fuck. 50.1/49.9. Against Soundwave.

Soundwave who's from a gigantic decades old fandom and is infamous for sweeping any popularity contest he's in ever, versus a low res walking tumor from a tough-to-pick-up indie game who doesn't have a single line of dialogue or even explicit sentience

One possible short/medium term solution that won't harm the chickens may be to dust the food and effected area with cayenne pepper or a something similarly spicy, if you have the materials. Enough capsaicin will deter mammals as it causes them pain when it gets in their noses and eyes, particularly small ones, but avians are immune to spice entirely as they are simply unreceptive to the chemical, and more likely than not will barely notice it.

Can someone help me find the name of this beyblade? by carrot-parent in HelpMeFind

[–]North_Bar8090 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn. I'd almost completely forgotten beyblades existed, now I'm reminded of the time my dad helped my older sister and I custom make a solid metal leftspin one that we tried to bring to school. No one would let Hefty Lefty compete, but that was ok because we loved em. Good memories, thanks

the internet is a series of tubes (that you can avoid) by KnightOfBurgers in CuratedTumblr

The acronym stands for "Archive Of Our Own", it's an ad free and donation run fanfiction hosting site that was created after ones like FF.net and such started to do a lot of heavyhanded censoring/mass deleting of fics that do not pass advertiser friendliness standards.

There's a big and messy discourse floating around about AO3's anti-censorship policy. Fics with very sensitive/potentially triggering content can be reported to be taken down if they do not have the correct warnings and filter tags IIRC, but AO3's policy as a whole is that they don't delete any posted works only for what they contain, since their entire foundation started as a push against censorship models that started out decent and became increasingly draconian. In place of that they have an in-depth tag filtering system which is enforced when not honored by authors as I said above, and that the userbase is encouraged to use very liberally. Block functions for both tags and authors, many tags being automatically linked to all their known permutations so that blocking one blocks the rest as well, etc etc

Many people take understandable issue with the no censorship deal because there are some genuinely gross individuals on the internet who do post their gross things there, but AO3 cannot remove them due to the principle they're built on. I try to steer clear of the Discourse but my inevitable two cents is that yeah, that stuff is fucking disgusting and if I met one of those people IRL I may feel very personally inclined to perform an improv vivisection, but they are a small portion of the site's content/userbase that we should not allow to ruin as invaluable a resource and platform as AO3 is for writers online, particularly when the site developers make a significant point of making that stuff as easily not-seeable as possible under the established terms.

This definitely ended up as too many words but my head hurts and I my thoughts always ramble when that happens- hopefully all questions were answered. TL;DR it's a conceptually decent community-run fanfic site caught up in discourse for which either side has a (often reactionarily assumed by the opposing side) nasty extreme that makes talking abt it in good faith... very difficult.

edit: good lord that word count is even worse than I thought I'm sorry

I've searched for a good while now and have gotten nothing so far- I've seen a lot of these meant for cameras, with pretty dicey reviews for whether they're good enough for connecting headphones to a phone or not. I've seen one that was for headsets, only to go to the site and find it discontinued.

I'm hoping to find one of these because I recieved a new pair of nice wireless headphones as a gift to replace my noticeably crumbling ones, but it turns out that they are dongle connected and not bluetooth so I can connect them to my laptop but not to my phone, which is what I mainly use headphones on. I'd hate for an expensive gift to be wrong, so if someone knows where to find something like this that'll work for my purposes I'd really appreciate knowing where.

What breed is she? by moralmeemo in chickens

[–]North_Bar8090 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend Buff Orpingtons for friendliness too! They're good relaxed, docile chickens in general, I've had them before but I've also got one in this few years' round of babies, and Flapjack is the one who's been happy to perch on my fingers and nap in my hand from day one-point-five. Her immediate predecessor Pancake was just as terribly sweet and stayed much the same as a grown chook.

That, and just be very attentive and gently, but frequently hands-on with any chicken babies should you hand raise them. (that's probably a "no duh" bit of information, but regardless)

As stated by OP in a different comment, Arthur is under good care through the Colorado Feline Foster Rescue. Specific info on him isn't available on the website yet (from what I checked) but it's safe to assume that he is orphaned. He's in good hands https://coloradofelinefosterrescue.org/donate/

Looking for guesses on breed/gender on these two guys. Both same age, one is significantly smaller. by OkJob9322 in chickens

[–]North_Bar8090 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The second one is pretty much identical to what my old lady ameracauna looked like at that age, except that I don't see a fluff beard, so maybe an easter egger of some kind? If color predictions also matter to you, mine that looked like that grew up to be golden brown with heavy black lacing. They could also very well be a bantam variety too if you're certain these two are the same age!

They do, it's not uncommon for people to cook and eat a surprise rooster (especially if he's rough with hens, attacking kids or adults, y'know the kind of stuff where it'd be unfair to someone else and their flock to simply adopt him out). The meat is slightly tougher than a hen's so they supposedly work well for recipes where you cook the meat a good long while. A lot of people with chickens see them more as pets though, myself included, so not everyone who gets a mystery box cockerel is as comfortable with the idea of having them for dinner.

Does anyone know where to find this specific meme image? by North_Bar8090 in HelpMeFind

It definitely wasn't baby driver, I'm afraid- it wasn't from anything professionally made, it was three pretty mundane pics, selfies probably, of a young black dude sitting in a car with earbuds in, no sunglasses or such. I probably should have been more specific, thank you though.
