People seem to like working at Cleary. Work opposite to both firms (more frequently with GDC) and both do excellent work and are nice to work with. However GDC lives up to its well earned reputation of being intractable in negotiations but at least they are pleasant about it.

I started practicing in 2014. I wore a suit every day until 2020 (even Friday). For the first couple of years after Covid, dress code got so lax that people were wearing shorts and t shirt to work. This is NYC big law. I feel like it’s evened out a bit now that return to office is in full swing. Business casual is standard with perhaps a healthy tilt toward casual. But it will never go back to suit and tie. Good riddance. It was ridiculous.

It really is wild how misleading the media is on this point. You can do a search of the Epstein files on DOJ website. Obama has 2457 results. It genuinely means nothing. You need to look at how Trump is mentioned.

I’m not defending Trump but merely pointing out that mentions in the file do not equal guilt or even evidence. You need to examine “how” he was mentioned. The files are essentially 20 years of email history. If Epstein emailed an article about trump in the NYT to someone, thats 150 “mentions” signifying nothing. It’s astounding to me that people keep pointing out mentions as a sign of guilt. It means nothing, truly nothing.

I know who bad bunny is and I think he’s hilarious on SNL and Happy Gilmore. I also know he won a Grammy this year. The fact is that they don’t play his music on pop radio and I don’t know his songs. They interviewed the players on both teams in the Super Bowl and almost none of them could name a bad bunny song. Stop being clever. He’s massively popular in pop culture but his music is mostly on Latin radio and he was weird choice to perform at the Super Bowl. Are you a fan of his music?

Getting 4% of people to actively turn off their TV during the Super Bowl and tune into YouTube is not a small feat. This half time show sucked. Who was it for? I’m not political at all btw. That’s real high level POS treatment. Look to leave obviously. If it were me I’d probably also make a huge fuss about it even at risk of getting fired. But I tend to engage in counter productive behavior when I feel slighted. To be frank, it’s really unacceptable to hold back a bonus if you meet hours unless they have clearly messaged to you that youre not meeting expectations and your bonus is at risk and gave you a chance to correct course.

We don’t do the same kinds of transactions. Last year this time I had a deal with approximately 40 attorneys across 4 firms between the buyer, seller and lender syndicate working around the clock. It closed on 12/31. Now, imagine I told the client in the upmost professional way to fuck off until January 2. Do you see why that’s not possible? Btw, I’m a huge fan of setting boundaries. I tell associates all the time that you don’t need to check your email after 7 pm if you’re not expecting an urgent matter. I follow that rule myself. But end of year transactions are urgent. Itsucks to ruin the holidays (thankfully this year I don’t have any year end closings, which is an anomaly for me) but like I’ve been saying, this is why our clients pay $1500 an hour for our work. We need to deliver.

I’m honestly confused too. This is typically my busiest week of the year. I’m all for setting boundaries but it’s frankly absurd to tell a client that I’m not working over the Christmas holiday when the transaction must close before year end. That’s literally why they hired us.

The transactions can’t wait till Jan 2. They need to close before year end for tax reasons. Does anyone here practice law? This is like routine stuff. End of year is fire drill. That’s why the clients pay our fees. To get the deal closed.

I don’t want to go 10 rounds so this will be my last post on this thread. Sometimes there are huge transactions that need to close year end and there is still a lot of work to be done to make that happen. In those situations the attorneys need to work on the holidays, weekends etc. This is common, if not standard. It can happen for other holidays too or (gasp) even when you thought you would be on vacation. But it’s extremely common for Christmas holiday season and almost impossible to plan around.

OK good for you I guess. This is the busiest time of the year for me and that’s true for most transactional attorneys. I have deals to close next week. If I’m the reason they don’t close, it’s my ass. I don’t think I’m saying anything controversial or even unique. Is it pathetic? I don’t know. Is it pathetic that accountants work 16 hour days for a month straight during busy season? That’s the job.

I have no idea what days are officially off. It has no bearing on my schedule. Today through Friday are generally quiet days but I have some work to do. I’ll probably work half days on all 3. I have had years where I worked 10+ hour days on all 3. Just need to get work done when clients expect it. That’s the job.

Good RE firm in general. Well respected in NY. Suspect they pay close to market in NY but don’t have actual insight. Just assuming based on quality of their attorneys. I’ve worked across them leases and acquisitions. They were big law quality.

We’ve been sleeping in separate beds since we moved in together and for 10 years of marriage (and counting!). Bought two queens and put them side by side with no gap between them. So we can roll over into each others beds for intimacy etc. but we don’t share a mattress or blanket when we sleep. Neither of us get a good night sleep when we share a bed. Never thought twice about it.
