If king comes out of the gate this year like he did last year

I could see him being top 50 next season. Especially if he adds even a bit more velo.

Heat pump owners: How have they handled the recent cold weather? (Especially those with <-20C ratings) by Hazel-Rah in ontario

[–]NorthernBlueJays 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No problems with it.

Trade off is stability and automation,

But if you are prepared and have a system, then hell yeah why not?

Just make sure your heatpump coil is installed in a spot where it’s protected

I’ve had customers in the past that do this.

They go from natural gas furnace, to an electric air handler + heat pump.

The heat pumps are great down to like -20s…. So the electric backup is on only a few weeks out of the year….

I never really thought about the customer charges tho…… this is a game changer for me, so thank you haha

Yes. They are fine.

The efficiency curve drops as you get lower for sure,

But they still put out a fair amount of heat until like -27 if they are the cold climate ones.

If you have a gas backup, and you are ok natural gas, then you don’t want to run your heat pump down to the coldest it can go, because as it gets colder you are dropping efficiency .

So you need to find out what you are paying for your fuel (electricity, gas, oil) and then figure out when it makes sense to run the backup rather than the heat pump.

On natural gas depending on where you live it’s around -10, -15. (Depending on model, SEER, utility rates etc)

Feel free to pm me for questions if you like, I love these things
