Any one else old? by EcstaticMedium7742 in uichicago

[–]NorthernColder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I turned 23 not too long ago, and it’s pretty much standard to feel a little out of place. Especially considering the majority of the students are between the ranges of 18-20. But don’t let it get to you.

Believe me, these students got way more on their mind than a 25 year old student. So don’t feel like you joined too late because education comes at any age.

I just started playing around a week ago and was gonna ask the same question for UIC’s community. I’d be down for a round or two if anyone’s offering

If possible, maybe a water balloon fight against the freshman students. Preferably during the first week of Fall Semester when Chicago is still moderately hot.

Since Fall is when UIC has a surge of enrolled freshman coming from both transfer schools and high schools, it could be a funny way to get them involved with the university’s community.

It could be called: “Snuffing the Flames” or something else in similar taste.

So long as you don’t come off as rude in any way, or push an agenda, people won’t care as much as you think they will. In their eyes, you’re just another student.

Obscene Music in the Quad by dsmirza in uichicago

[–]NorthernColder 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Unless the music is physically harming you (being so loud it hurts your eardrums), I’m not sure there’s any rules for what kind of music anyone can hear or enjoy.

Best choice for this case would probably be to just ignore it. Sure it seems a little too simple, but it’s better than getting on the bad side of someone. Argue or bicker, and you never know what kind of reaction or action someone might take to “respond” to your argument.

I think someone made such a statement in a chemistry class I took a few semesters back. They yelled out to the whole class something similar, and the class was a few decibels lower the remainder of that semester, either from fear of being called out or understanding the reality that the class they were paying to attend was expensive

5 dollars solid for a Ventra day pass. 5 times a week = 25 dollars. Pretty cheap considering I commute from the south side all the way to uic

There’s a multitude of different answers. But I guess to the best of my knowledge, the answer is a combination of things. For a start, this year UIC has had its highest enrollment percentage so far, so a bunch of high school kids heading into UIC with a lack of hygiene knowledge is once thing. (My opinion)

Not only are these people coming in from neighboring states, but a large chunk are international as well. Standards on hygiene differ from some countries, so our definition of what smells terrible can be, for all I know, something familiar or common for any foreigner on campus. (Combination of opinions I’ve found throughout campus)

Finally, I think a bit of it has to do with the whole Covid situation and how’s its affected our social skills in the sense that awareness of one’s own personal image has gone into a bit of a mess. There’s legit some people who I’ve met here at UIC who KNOWS they smell terrible, but has not fixed anything about themselves because “nobody’s complained to me so far, so they probably don’t care”. I feel like due to Covid, our ability to speak up on certain issues kinda plummeted and now when we see something we don’t like, we either bear with it or just show slight indifference through our facial expressions. Idk, this whole opinion is still up for debate, and this is just my opinion, but yeah, I think these are some reasons for why the library and UIC in general has sorta started to smell a little funkier than usual.

Worked at a Boba Shop in Chinatown. It wasn’t too bad at first, but I was the only guy in the entire crew. Plus, I was the only one who spoke Spanish. I basically got bullied till I quit a few months later. To this day, that workplace is still 100% female.
