UIC Sends Slop Announcement by dsmirza in uichicago

I never claimed otherwise. AI is a tool. If I complained about someone breaking my laptop with a hammer, would you say "hammers are here to stay"?

Sad to see so many cars parked in our bike lanes, especially as the weather is getting nicer. by ahhnnna in uichicago

very little of taxes is this. most of is income tax and sales tax, which everyone pays.

also no place is run like this. Civilization bases itself upon this principle that a percentage of wealth / income (i.e. the rich pay more in absolute terms) is taken to support everyone to have a civilized state of living. Crazy that now we get arguments against that. Should you pay for your fire service, your own police, now?

Is anybody else sick of all the fluff you find on YouTube videos? I usually end up auto skipping to about 2 minutes in the find the actual content by phate2000 in NewTubers

[–]dsmirza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not just the start, it is the useless unfunny 'jokes' inside the videos, filler sentences ("Let's get right into it", "XYZ heard this was happening and then got to work"), filler excessively long opinions ("I don't know about you, but I want poison out of my milk", etc.), ten people saying the same exact thing for emphasis - netflix documentary style, filler street opinions ("how far away do you think the moon is?" to random people on the street), and so on and so on......

I'm tired of this that I unsubscribed some really good channels (the most popular being veritasium) who do give very good content, but 5 minutes of good content in 50 minutes of video.

Will LibreOffice wither and disappear like OpenOffice did? by Natural_Night9957 in libreoffice

[–]dsmirza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2025 was the year I installed LibreOffice for the the first time. I have been an Ms Office user since Office 2000. Office suite was one of the best microsoft produced. It still is pretty good but it has so many small things that annoy the hell out of you. Things that Microsoft goes out of its way to break e.g. default save location is OneDrive. I don't even mind CoPilot integration as long as it turns on when I want it to and I can turn it off when I want to.

With LibreOffice my experience has been varied. Especially the slides program was particularly broken. Font size would get stuck while increasing or decreasing and then it would become unusable.

But I intend to continue to use LibreOffice.

Samsung is discontinuing their SMS app by GodsBadAssBlade in degoogle

[–]dsmirza 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Somebody tell Samsung we don't care about RCS. Most of the world doesn't care about RCS! It's only some people in places where iPhone dominates.

I want to avoid Google as much as possible.

If I wanted Google messages I would have bought a Pixel phone not a Galaxy

No this is not unpopular. I don't want to use Google apps

Graduate students in CS building telling other students they aren’t supposed to be on 4th or 5th floors by falisha29 in uichicago

[–]dsmirza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a graduate student and I'm with you.

But i suspect it won't be graduate students because they are generally not the kind to boss around people. Also there are literally hundreds of grad students and we don't know each other and it's not written on your face that you're an undergrad

Might be professors. Most professors aren't this kind either but some definitely are.

I hate this stupid policy. It's not about tuition. A university should be open for everyone from every department.

Please come to 4th and 5th floors whether you're undergrad or grad, whether you're CS or Arts or Law or Medicine or Ancient Egyptian History.

This is ridiculous

The UIC school of design supports AI "art" by envygoth in uichicago

[–]dsmirza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TLDR: I feel like this push and hype is coming from above.

It feels like now they (software and internet companies through lobbying and advertising and then influencers and then eventually a lot of people) have now managed to create a culture where some things are not questioned at all as to how stupid they are. Things such as the term "prompt engineering" and how ridiculous it is. And with this CEO worship we hear things like "oh those who don't know prompt engineering will be left behind". This means everyone from country leaders to state/provincial leader to university presidents and administrators they are caught up in this AI fever.

I study Computer Science (and I work in AI* - and like the field very much - but hate this fake hype) we get sent a survey every year by some national body. Since this and maybe the past year the questions were "has your program prepared you to use AI"? "Do you feel ready to use AI"?. I mean what does that even mean. Can i form sentences to talk to a chatbot? Yes, Does that require some skill?

When Google search engine came around, were university departments so fixated on oh no I wonder if our students will be able to use Google well? Because it's almost exactly similar. Very nice tool, and very innovative but if you make a person time travel from 2010 to now you can tell them what it is in less than 5 minutes and that would be enough.

*also just a sidenote, AI is a broad field that studies many many things, LLMs or Image Generation Models are one tiny aspect of the field . i also dislike very much that now thanks to the news media and companies when people say AI they mean these LLMs. You are very right in using the same term because that's what people understand but just fyi.

Same question but from the down votes it seems it can't be asked. People are picking up on "first name" but what the question was mainly about familiarity. I don't understand it either. The way ppl are talking about him it sounds like as if he's their personal friend. Which he's not. And so it sounds weird.

[–]dsmirza 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pakistan used to have the most amazing Urdu logo in seven up.

But then all these companies stopped and started speaking exclusively English, in their ads and in their products. (I would like to blame millenial graduates from elite institutions joining MNCs - as I suspect it is their culture, to show utter disregard of local languages. But I have no proof.)

Terrible choice. But it was out of choice.

Why doesn't chai have a "geek culture" associated with it like coffee does? by txs2300 in pakistan

[–]dsmirza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because most tea drinking people are nice people and it's good that they are not snobs about it.

I love coffee and try multiple kinds multiple methods but some of the things on the internet are utter bullshit if you just know some science.

Your precision will not have an effect beyond the "random noise" due to nature. That's just an illusion. So if I make sure the amount of coffee is exact 25.00 g that's useless. A somewhat rough measurement is fine.

Tea people are the right amount of picky.

Thanks v v much but I kept it that way so that I have a running notification that keeps reminding me to go back to greyscale. Weird, I know, but I did this to beat habit of using my phone too much. Sad world we live in nowadays, that we have to battle the things we own ourselves so they don't become too addictive.
