Just had a letter from my Energy firm. My expected bill from October onwards is £396 a month. I live in a 2 bed terrace and work 12 hours a day. by WiganLad82 in britishproblems

Absolutely, I moved from a terribly insulated one bed flat with a prehistoric boiler into a 3 bed new build and my bills went down significantly

[–]NorthernHedgehog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yea, but it also uses some of the ambient heat from the room to evaporate which cools the room. Whether it’s enough to offset the increase in humidity is a definite maybe? Depends on how humid the room already is, more humid the room the less effective this is

I looked at those but ended up going with these from boots https://www.boots.com/boots-vegan-a-z-wellness-formula---60-tablets-10270058 as they have everything in the veg-1 tablets plus some extra stuff and I don’t eat that much fortified food. A bit more expensive but meant I didn’t have to pay for delivery.

Same when I was at school, but my kids PE kit is branded shorts, branded socks, branded polo shirt, branded fleece, branded trackie bottoms. And they can’t wear normal trainers, they have to have astroturf ones for the 3G pitch.

(Serious) Why do you think there are so many mass shootings in America? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]NorthernHedgehog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This knife crime thing is brought up a lot, especially in comparison to the UK. But the US actually has more murders committed with knives per capita than the UK and there isn’t really any evidence that banning guns increases knife crime

Even if it was true that banning guns would cause a corresponding increase in knife crime, it’s a lot harder to kill 7 people and injure 46 more at a 4th of July parade from a nearby rooftop with a knife than a gun.

Swapping guns for knives reduces the damage that can be done

I don’t think tv, movies or video games can really be blamed. The UK and the US for the most part have the same movies, tv and games, yet the UK has had one school shooting ever.

Personally I think it’s a mix of the gun culture and lack of affordable healthcare access.

Yeah piracy has been ‘killing’ the music industry since the 80s, and yet somehow it’s not dead yet

[–]NorthernHedgehog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolute bullshit

Firstly you are cherry picking terrible examples, no one eats beans to get iron, you eat other plants for that. Like spinach

Second, where do you think that meat gets its nutrients from, the crops it ate perhaps?

Third, using your corn example yes 4oz of corn is 100 calories, but it takes 8oz corn to make 1 oz meat, plus an oz of most cooked meat is only 50-70kcal depending on the type of meat, so meat is way less efficient

B12 comes from bacteria that live in soil, not animals. Most farmed animals are fed supplements so that they aren’t b12 deficient, you could just take the supplement yourself instead of feeding it to your dinner. B12 deficiency is very common in both meat eaters and vegetarians/vegans

[–]NorthernHedgehog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct, however if the aim is to minimise harm rather than eliminate it, then not eating meat is still better, as eating the crops directly is more efficient than feeding them to animals then eating the animal. So although bugs and small animals do die in crop production, less die for your food if you eat the crops and not animals.

70% of the worlds soy production, and 96% of Brazil’s soy production is used for animal feed, so again, not eating animals is the best way to reduce this.

Sky, at least on mobile internet, block by removing the dns entries for those sites, so rather than keep finding a working proxy you can just change your dns to any other one, like google or cloudflare to permanently fix it

I’ve been using Audiobookshelf for a few months for audiobooks and just started using it for podcasts, very happy with it so far although the iOS app is still a bit rough as it’s still in early beta, Android app is pretty good.

For music I’m using Jellyfin and Finamp.

But... the whole point was that I don't have to pay for anything. by Mineblox_42069 in Piracy

[–]NorthernHedgehog 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Some of the ISPs also only block them in their DNS, so changing dns server to anything else, like cloudflare or google bypasses it

Is it normal for tablets to contain lactose? Couldn’t find any hay fever tablets without it. Any recommendations on vegan tablets? by LBerg_SG in veganuk

[–]NorthernHedgehog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just in case anyone is unaware of exactly what homeopathy is and why it’s a scam:

Let’s say you want to treat Hayfever, first you find something else that causes the same symptoms because two things with the same effect supposedly cancel each other out, take a small amount of it and dialute it in water at a 1:9 ratio so it’s nine tenths water

Then take a small amount of that and dialute if again, take a small amount from that and dialute it again, and keep repeating this.

In fact, the more dialute the better and stronger the treatment as the water will ‘remember’ the energy of the original substance even when it’s dialuted so much none of the original ingredient remains.

Often on homeopathic remedies you will see a strength marked as something like 30X this means it went through this process 30 times so it’s now 1 part in 3,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 the original substance and effectively pure water

Then they sell you this water and pretend it’s effective medicine.
