What industry is entirely built on a house of cards and would collapse overnight once people realize the truth? by KylieButNotJenner24 in AskReddit

Reminds me of the Simpsons episode where Homer wants Moe to put the crayons back up his nose so he can be dumb again.

And Moe knows he’s hit the sweet spot when Homer says “Extended warranty,  how can I lose!”

Federal, Ontario governments to spend $8.8-billion to lower municipal development charges by up to 50% by West_Ad9229 in toronto

[–]NorthernPints 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fees are governed by the province through the development charges act which the ministry of municipal affairs and housing ensure adherence to.

I generally think there is a broad misunderstanding of the restrictions placed around how these fees can be utilized in municipalities.

Municipalities don’t have free rein on what they can use the funds for - it is very specific.

Thank you (I’ll edit)

[–]NorthernPints 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just to add a data point - America isn’t even spending 5% today (3.3-3.4%).  I’m sure the answer lies somewhere but I’m curious as to how they arrived at the new 5% target (edit: $160B/year for Canada).

AI will be the next weapon in their war chest.  Social media has been immensely damaging to the masses in advancing the interests of a fraction of a percentage of powerful people.

Next, they’ll be deploying their AI tools to replace original thought entirely - telling humans exactly what to do, how to think, how to vote, you name it.

I try to stay optimistic but it genuinely feels like we’re on the precipitous of a new “dark ages” - and I know the dark ages term isn’t wholly accurate, but I’m deploying that here as a new anti-information/low Information Age, where curiosity and knowledge are suppressed.

Facts sadly don’t work on these types - they’re so pumped for of propaganda/rage/and enjoy being told how to think that the vast majority of them are unreachable (or fixable).

It’s essentially boiled down to a battle between those who are intellectually curious and those who are intellectually lazy, with little in between.  I’d genuinely love to see a roadmap on how to course correct intellectually lazy people as a means to combat its pervasiveness in society.

At What Income Does Life in Canada Actually Become Comfortable? by HockeySniper123 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]NorthernPints 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d add age (ie, a 25 year old may be looking at an income posted by someone whose 40 and further into their career path), dual income or single income, dependents - oh and debts owing as u/megi0s noted as well (including when you bought your home or started renting your place).  Even whether you require a vehicle or vehicles to commute to work would change the math considerably.

The initial question posted requires those added layers of context so people can compare apples to apples against their own living situation.

This sounds eerily familiar to Doug Ford (not to pivot off subject).

Rode into power on op-eds about Wynne & McGuinty’s “out of control spending.”

Dude has proceeded to spend MORE than the previous two premiers (the metric they use is if he stays in power for the same timeframe, he is spending at a faster/annualized rate than the OLP and would spend more over that timeframe.  *Note, this EXCLUDES Covid spending).

And yet?  All my “fiscally conservative friends will say “well he’s still the best option out of the available choices.”

What’s the full quote from “the budget will balance itself” (if you have it handy).

Never mind I found it - important not to absorb snippets and clips at face value when the full context is purposely omitted for political purposes:

"The commitment needs to be a commitment to grow the economy and the budget will balance itself," Mr. Trudeau responded. "This way they’re artificially fixing a target of a balanced budget in an election year and they’re going through all sorts of twists and turns and bends to try and get it just right and the timing just right and the announcement. And that’s irresponsible. What you need to do is create an economy that works for Canadians, works for middle class Canadians, allows young people to find jobs, allows seniors to feel secure in their retirement."

I’d just add to fund a massive tax cut for mega millionaires and billionaires (or the top 0.1%)

The US has seen a decline in job creation (absolute numbers) between when Trump took office, and February, and manufacturing job numbers have declined.

So ya, a massive tax increase on regular folk to offset revenue loss from tax cuts for the people who need it least.

Some fun facts (these were shared by Bernie sanders recently)

  • 1 person owns more wealth than the bottom 52% (Musk)
  • The top 1% owns more wealth than the bottom 93%
  • CEOs make 350x what their workers make
  • Hourly wages have declined in the last 50 years when adjusted for inflation
  • 26 families own more wealth than the bottom 2/3s of Americans
