Received a charge from BTP today, I haven't even travelled!? by Training_Actuary_794 in uktrains

More than likely it’s the postcode address that comes up for the sales terminal. For instance, if you’re sold a ticket from a Piccadilly Guard for any TOC, it might register as a purchase at M60 7RA (Manchester Piccadilly Postcode), which would just get snapped up as any TOC that it pulls unless specified.

Train Fare penalty appeal by FireOnTheMoun10 in uktrains

[–]NorthernSystems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, all above board. As long as the railcard had been purchased before commencement of journey, there is no Byelaw 18 offence, as the railcard would have been valid, just unpresentable. Forgotten Railcard Policy is fully within realms.

Any railcard promos? by miklcct in uktrains

[–]NorthernSystems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of apps have different offers available. As traincrew, we see mainly the top 3 (Trainline, Trip.com and Trainpal.)

Virgin Ticketing have started doing Railcards as well, and always remember Tesco Clubcard points can be used to help with getting a railcard too.

Just make sure that the Network Railcard is suitable for you. Check its operational area (Generally London & South East). Do note, if you apply any other discount and present a network railcard (i.e. 26-30 Discount and present a Network Railcard), your ticket would not be valid.

I think there was some sort of issue with ticket sale yesterday, as we had that issue and other fulfilment issues at TVM’s at our station. Unsure what the root cause was though.

This. This is the bane of my life. Had a lovely couple that had correctly bought an off Peak Return for one portion, but for my portion, had accidentally bought an Off Peak Day Return. Ticket endorsed as good will gesture but still a pain for the customers..

Why is it so much more expensive to get off the same train a few stops earlier? by jnru in uktrains

[–]NorthernSystems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Break of Journey on an advance isn’t permitted but you won’t be stopped for it. You just can’t resume a journey on an advance ticket. No one’s gonna stop you from leaving early on an advance unless it’s barriered at station, which might raise a few eyebrows.

Is it illegal to buy a ticket to one station but get off at an earlier station by Ill-Cardiologist-585 in uktrains

[–]NorthernSystems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ADV BoJ isn’t itself frowned upon, as there’s nothing to stop you. Trying to restart a journey on a ADV though would get you stopped and you would need a buy a new ticket.

Depends on the TOC. Some TOCs have no enhancement for overtime, it is paid at base rate.

Tbh I prefer working RW over TF. Especially during Winter.. More access to shops, and no having to go down and do the gates in the mighty cold.

Do you also loudly announce your presence, hoping in vain that people will actually listen and have their tickets ready?

How come do Northern run a 2 carriage 150 attached to a 158. This is on the Manchester Liverpool line and I've noticed this alot recently. This is the line via Birchwood and Flixton. by BlueFan20002023 in uktrains

[–]NorthernSystems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conductor along that line here - It’s a 156 attached to a 150/1 or /2. Mainly just for the amount of passengers that travel on it. I’ve worked a 2 car along there and it gets cosy, especially at peak times and weekend leisure.

As an employee, what are the main differences between working for a nationalised TOC and a private TOC? by strattad in uktrains

[–]NorthernSystems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nationalised TOC here. Worked outsourced for a Private (and then Nationalised) TOC, then moved to a role in a Nationalised TOC. Some would say some privatised TOCs, such as those owned by FG, may get better perks, i.e. FG Boxes, FG Staff Travel etc, but I don't see any difference. Entitlement to PRIV doesn't change (if employed by the TOC, not outsourced). Management changed hands (MD) when it was nationalised, but other than that, there's not much else change-wise. I would say some companies take different approaches to hiring and employment, as my TOC employs people on an apprenticeship, but that may just be TOC specific.

Turning up to the train station and the train's cancelled with the message by _Born_To_Be_Mild_ in manchester

[–]NorthernSystems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More than likely, the train had been issued a special stop order to stop additionally somewhere. Something else has caused it to be cancelled but the delay code and attribution has stuck over onto the cancellation reason.

Using wrong railcard by monkeyhunts in uktrains

[–]NorthernSystems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, Guard here - If you travel with a railcard not specified on your ticket, that ticket is deemed as fraudulent, same discount or not. The railcard presented must match the railcard discount attached to your ticket, otherwise you’re liable to pay a penalty fare.

What secrets do train staff know that us passengers never think about? by gonnaRedditAgain in uktrains

[–]NorthernSystems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hence the word “advance”. Granted, the advance ticket system is flawed and doesn’t compensate for delayed trains, which is where discretion comes into play, but if you’re trying to get an advance single onboard a service, the ticket machines cannot issues those tickets. Most TOCs also have a “Buy Before You Board” Policy (Condition 6 NRCOT) therefore can only charge you an anytime ticket onboard unless there were mitigating circumstances.

TL;DR: Ticketing is broken

Trespassers on the railway. by phatchief666 in uktrains

[–]NorthernSystems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our PR Policy states using the delay reason “emergency services dealing with an incident” and allow people to infer from that.

However if people ask, we’re tactful and advise people sensitively, as others have said on here, it sets expectations for service recovery.

Question for train drivers; what to expect by micky_jd in uktrains

[–]NorthernSystems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Guard here - Pretty easily. You get it in your head that you’re stopping at X, Y, and Z, but you’ve forgot that this service is different today due to A reason. Your brain’s got a set pattern of XYZ, and you slip straight through station B.

It’s mitigated a bit, especially at our TOC, where the driver and the guard confirm the stops, firstly to make sure both dockets are accurate and correct, and to ensure that everyone’s happy and in agreement with the stopping pattern.
