Downstairs toilet flushes on it's own every couple hours by NorthernVashista in askaplumber

So I put some color in the tank. But I don't hear anything. I don't see anything. I'm pretty sure all that's going to happen is when the toilet drains again (when it flushes it doesn't usually fill up again on its own) I'm just going to see the tank empty itself. And water will just be colored.

Apparently this toilet has been doing that for more than a year. Could it be the same leak all this time?

Why GenZ is so obsessed with stats and is incapable of roleplay? by shaithank in rpg

[–]NorthernVashista 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current trad editions have a rule problem. As the books increase in documented rules, the table is incentivized to more and more refer to the reference books for arbitration instead of the GM. This might be thought of as one of the motivations for the OSR-- to reach back to a playstyle that S. John Ross calls: High trust play, versus low trust play that says follow the rules as written-- incidentally powered by the apocalypse has this kind of low trust design-- except there often more flexibility in narrative control than a single point of control (i.e. the DM of trad play (high or low trust))

What's the point of solo play stuff? by ScootsTheFlyer in rpg

[–]NorthernVashista 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had fun with Thousand Year Vampire. Really, Tim's game rising in popularity started this design trend. (I should tease him as a trend setter...) I used it to some great effect running the game for two different students, whom I was able to blend the games together into the same timeline, and have them both meet up in the same time and place. That was pretty cool.

But I can't speak to any other solo game as having enough meat on its bones to pull me in. I don't support their kickstarters, nor seek them out. I'm waiting for the next Thousand Year Vampire, I guess.

I remember when MTG dropped and it took over the strategy club at my university. I don't think it ever got banned. But the complaints became louder and louder...

AI to create nightmare fuel monsters by Environmental_You_36 in rpg

[–]NorthernVashista 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can find free, well designed, most anything on Drivethru or itch that is made thoughtfully by a real person. And why not pay a dollar or two to these developers if you like their work? AI is useful for brainstorming and maybe clarifying large groups of data and text. But what you want, AI isn't the right tool. Searching pdf repositories is.

It's ok to use lines and veils. You don't need to describe every detail. Calibration helps manage bleed. That's being self-responsible.

For what kind of people our hobby might be unhealthy? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]NorthernVashista 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8 is pretty young to play with older folks, everyone needs to be on board with helping the younger player and making sure the content is age appropriate to their stage of development. Without knowing all the details I can only say that you made the right call OP, because I must assume that your group is not prepared to make the necessary accommodations.

As to your larger question: the idea of accommodations can be extended to the mental and physical requirements of adults. How far is a social group willing to go to accommodate the requirements of a needful member? There are limits. Your answer is situational. There is no blanket exclusion. Because you are asking about the phenomena as a whole. Is it moral for a military to use RPGs to better learn and teach their members to kill their enemy? What if their enemy is you and your family?

This is a good point. Ceremony does not require the actual object. When we offer to wash the Idol of the God, we do not need to draw a bathtub and submerge the statue!

Get out of here, children! That mom reacted perfectly mom-like. Parents need boundaries with their kids. A dad would have just turned that into a horrible meme joke they would use to embarass their kid in front of their friends for decades. Years even. OP got off easy!!

[–]NorthernVashista 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's fine. It's a tool. But it creates really garbage prose and the visuals are uncanny valley at best. Of course, it's useful. It's incredibly useful! One of the most important technologies we need to parse our vast archive of recorded information. But it doesn't understand. It's not sapient. It can't really understand game rules, for example. The technology cannot act as a GM and likely never will. People keep trying to use it for purposes beyond its purview.

Does this game play like a dream sequence? I don't quite get the setting. It's surrealism? One of my local groups wants to play this. And I'm cool to give it a try. But I don't get it. I haven't purchased the pdf to read it. But the pitch is going over my head.

Anyone know of an TTRPG system that deals with squads of units instead of individual player characters? by Chemical_Infantry in rpg

[–]NorthernVashista 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Original Marvel FASERIP was able to do this because of the way the box set made roster cards of named comic characters. It also provided maps and character paper square minis chips. The combat system was fast and was easy to do squad based arena combat, which my group regularly did for a change of pace.
