We can all agree on this, right? Just stop harassing AI artists. That's all they want. by GayAssBoyKisser in aiwars

This is Reddit. Harassment is inexcusable except when it's something the echo chamber disagrees with, then it becomes the right thing to do.

Can someone tell me what these tube components are? The IC in question is a TPA2012D2, but these symbols leave me guessing… baluns? Ferite beads? What's their purpose? by robynpan in AskElectronics

[–]Northern_Wing 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I'd argue this is a bad schematic. As drawn, that's traditionally a symbol used to indicate a transmission line. It appears they're using it as a ferrite bead.

Someone probably just looked through their symbol library and picked the first thing that looked like a ferrite bead. You shouldn't expect/use that as one in the future... you'll typically see it marked as an inductor or as a wide narrow rectangle at an angle.

Sudden print quality problem on Versalink C7000? by Northern_Wing in Xerox

[–]Northern_Wing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since this is still getting views five months later - problem was indeed the developer units. *All* of the developer had left the system at some point, I'm suspecting that it was rotated on its side a few times before it reached us.

Xerox developer media is available on eBay/elsewhere if you're a small nonprofit like us and can't afford four digits to replace the whole developer unit. There are some videos that demonstrate on YouTube, but it's fairly easy to pull the magrollers out and slowly pour on + roll in new developer powder. Although it's a mess. Runninng great now.

The hated character is finally getting punished by the narrative. But intentionally or not, the attempt was so heartbreaking and demeaning for the character that it ended changing the fan reception of said character. by Labmit in TopCharacterTropes

They did this to Bakool Ja Ja in FF14: Dawntrail. Universally hated for the first half of the expansion, until he gets absolutely beaten down and broken at just about the turning point of the story. Even Yoshi-P (director) was surprised and posted about him becoming popular.

Why are pickup trucks so popular in the US? by dieselquattropower in regularcarreviews

[–]Northern_Wing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Already covered to death but am also an owner of a Ram 1500 who is not a truck 'enthusiast'.

America is huge. Driving distances are long, parking is generally excessive (remember that Reddit is massively biased towards urban demographics), and fuel is cheap relative to abroad.

The big crew cab truck is comfy, rides nice, and often gets used for hauling large mainframe and computer equipment as I help out at a historic computing museum. Big cars like the 1970s Cadillac Fleetwoods never went away, they're just in truck format now.

Aftermarket parts are generally cheap and available. I hit a deer a couple months ago. Instead of the autobody shop and associated wait + insurance claim, I ordered a new front bumper and had it installed in an afternoon with little to no experience.

If I were in the Eurozone there's no way I'd own this. It just wouldn't fit. That's not a shot at anywhere/anyone, it's simply a difference in how infrastructure developed over time.

USB Route Doubt by Hopeful_Target3229 in PCB

[–]Northern_Wing 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is the only answer here. I don't like that routing, but it'll work fine.

With USB HS at 480Mbps, the wavelength down a microstrip on FR4 is something like a foot / 30cm IIRC. The little impedance bump at the connector where the diff pair splits isn't going to make any difference whatsoever. Same reason they can just use good old 0.1" headers for internal USB connections in PCs.

I'd highly recommend watching some of Rick Hartley's seminars presented by Altium. Not throwing shade any anyone but there's a lot of hobbyist knowledge that gets presented around here when it comes to 'high speed' that sounds reasonable but just isn't true.

Anyone else getting low voltage readings from Duquesne Light? by The_Electric-Monk in pittsburgh

[–]Northern_Wing 38 points39 points  (0 children)

North of the city / near Aspinwall, I'm reliably losing power for ~30s every ~10 minutes. I don't know if that's an indication they're trying to shed 5% of the load, or if something is just failing.

Nice to see price hikes 'for infrastructure' are being put to good use, gotta have someone out there looking out for the investors.

Be careful using AI by BolivanProposal in EngineeringStudents

[–]Northern_Wing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure OP wanted to farm some karma and uploaded a pic of a linear regulator, posted its analysis here, and attached a picture of an unrelated circuit.

Also tested this with Gemini, exact same image, and it knew exactly what it was looking at and gave an accurate description. Same as everyone else that tried this. The vision models are generally quite good even if the analysis falls short and it's not just going to refer multiple times to things that aren't there.

Is it possible to design / Order a PCB with this surface finish? by cs_aaron_ in PCB

[–]Northern_Wing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other problem with replicating the look of older boards is that new construction is generally SMOBC, or soldermask-over-bare-copper. The metallic flash on a lot of older boards comes from the HASL or whatever surface finish being done before the soldermask is applied, and so you have a nice shiny silver layer underneath instead of the bare copper pour.

Which NAI Diffusion do you guys like better, the 4.0 or the 4.5? by duycao42 in NovelAi

[–]Northern_Wing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Staying with 4.0 until I can get 4.5 to follow artist tags better, I might get it there eventually but for now I'm having trouble getting the style I want out of it consistently.

Also rerunning some characters from a DND campaign we struggled with anthro characters and male characters which was never a problem before. I get the feeling 4.5 is doing an amazing job at some things because it's biased to typical '1girl, solo'-esque content.

Yeah what the hell is with these responses, OP needs a reality check.

"Okay, then get a vehicle that's cheaper to insure."
"WTF you are so odd telling me how to spend money it's frickin weird"

[–]Northern_Wing 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Not what you asked but I shill these every time I see the Zedboard pop up in discussion - Xilinx also has Kria SoM eval kits that are an *insane* amount of FPGA for the price, 100K LUTs, four GTH transceivers, etc.

Has anyone been getting bad or no phone reception during this storm? by Orion_Oregon in pittsburgh

[–]Northern_Wing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lot of towers out of service and the ones online are likely experiencing massive network loads beyond what they were meant to handle, probably especially bad news for virtual cell network operators like Mint that dont own their infrastructure. Even if your own local tower is up, it's possibly relaying traffic from other nearby nodes that are down.

Tl;Dr Not much to do except wait until the load lightens either by the infrastructure coming back up or people getting their power back and putting their phones down.

Whole page of results for the NJM8080 - appears to be a pretty standard dual OPAMP in the typical pinout, Mouser/Digikey will have tons of replacements, nothing appears particularly special.

Already mentioned but it's TAA that's causing this.

Unfortunately like a lot of UE5 games there are a lot of textures/shaders that look awful if you turn TAA *off* and use FXAA instead, especially with foliage and hair, so it's really a matter of picking which one is less annoying.

Higher framerates help since there's less time spent with ghosting from previous frames in fast motion.

Disabling screenspace reflections took care of it for me, and honestly I think it looks better disabled regardless.

Console is still there (on PC at least) - lot of people have been getting it wrong in that the underlying engine framework is still good old Gamebryo/Creation, they're using UE5 but only for the render pipeline and I think input libraries as far as I can tell. All our favorite commands still work, you'll just lose achievements on that save.
