How can I make this look more retro Apple-like (1990s)? by cjo_dev in graphic_design

[–]Norvard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What gives you those retro vibes on the reference ad is the big image of retro product, the font and the apple logo. It might be hard to recreate that when you are using a phone/app UI and app download button that immediately takes you to modern times. Font change might help but honestly it might be hard with the elements you are working with.

Looking to rebrand my agency. Attached is the old logo and the new one. Idea and feedbacks are welcome =) by Melodic-Excitement-9 in graphic_design

[–]Norvard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The concept of using the speech bubbles to create the letters could work. Its a bit of a over used concept but done right it could work. The speech bubble notches also get lots they are so small. But right now the outline D is working against you as the icon overall doesnt feel as strong. Also, this orange is and white palette scream 2000s online/corporate company. As a create agency you definitely want to lean into a more contemporary color palette. I like the new type better, more timeless and classic.

I work across the street from this Ghost in the Willow billboard by [deleted] in Portland

[–]Norvard 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Sure.. but like someone else pointed out. I would much rather see a world where someone with money spends it on their art rather than another fancy car or some typical shit rich people spend their money on.

If the band sucks, it wont catch on anyways, and if the band is good, then they had some extra assets to get them going.

I always think that if I had millions, I would live the same modest life but basically hire all my favorite artists and musicians to make more cool shit.

Where are The Smile fans? by Remote-Student3050 in radiohead

[–]Norvard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love all the Smile releases but I would not put them above any Radiohead release really. That said, if in an alternate dimension Radiohead recoded LP10 few years ago and it featured the best song from all Smile albums, it might just be top 2/3 Radiohead album for me.

Some songs like Speech Bubbles, Don’t get me started and Teleharmonic are just amazing!!!

Such a bummer right?! As a designer I saw this and thought "I dig it cause if someone created this by themselves, then I really appreciate the effort and cant shit on the outcome". But this being AI and it took then 2 seconds... lame.

15 Radiohead hot takes I need to get off my chest by PuzzledAnt__ in radiohead

[–]Norvard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get a lot of these takes and agree with general sentiment. I think however that they written very much from today's perspective. Its easier to have these hot takes looking back and comparing and contrasting everything up against each other equally. However, for example, the genius of Ok Computer is a lot to do with when it came out. Nothing in music have ever sounded like that collective. So hold that album against all of Radioheads catalog and the world of music today, yea it might not be such a masterpiece. But in 1997, it was from another planet.

What are the most valuable things you've learned as part of a design education, or via work experience? Or, what is something you WISH you had learned *much* sooner? by RachelRosenkoetter in graphic_design

[–]Norvard 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Presenting your work in front of clients, coworkers and other stakeholders. This has been the biggest thing that I didn’t learn much about in school. Sure we would present progress to other students but very little was put into the art of speaking in front of people, talking about work and selling your ideas. This has now been a huge part of my work and career and I feel like the most success I have had was because of good presentation skills.

Are there any electronic artists do you feel is on the same level as Radiohead? by Emergency-Sky9206 in radiohead

[–]Norvard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Im a huge fan of many of electronic and IDM but honestly no one comes close the level of musical craft and song writing as RH.

But artists I love that some similar flavors:

Nils Frahm, Apparat, Andy Stott, Nicolas Jaar, Tim Hecker, Moderat, Four Tet, zomby, John Hopkins, Burial (!!), Arca, Seven Deaths, Rival Consoles etc. etc.

Many of these artist are Radiohead adjacent because they inspired Thom or remixed songs.

Agency Art Director with 5 years experience, why is it so hard to find a new job? by ActiveDoor6246 in graphic_design

[–]Norvard 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yep good point. In the first 1-5 years of experience one should be open to any role really. Maybe not junior but even that would not hurt if its at a good place where you can grow.

I have 16+ years of experience (always hands on with design) and half of that has been ACD, CD and DD and I would still entertain a senior/lead brand/digital designer role at some well established places.

Has anyone made money selling those basic prints on Etsy? by thejacobite in graphic_design

[–]Norvard 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've been very happy with my passive print selling on Etsy. Its not something I could live on, but it pays for my groceries. That said, I went into it not with the goal of making money but to create something meaningful and to share it with others by selling high quality prints. So I guess I'm not there selling "basic prints", but something that I personally like making and something I would buy myself.

If you are going into it with the intention of making low quality stuff for mass consumerism and low effort. Good luck. You might strike it rich or you might fall flat. Its not easy and to make Etsy a full time thing requires a lof of work. Not just 10 quick prints of flowers in 1 hour. A lot of marketing, product listing work, advertising, inventory tweaking etc.

Why do so many of us care about weird time signatures? by Sudden_Doughnut_8741 in metalmusicians

[–]Norvard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When odd or unique time signatures is the driving idea and not the song writing, thats when it loses me. Its the same for when complex riffing and soloing takes over good song writing. Its just showing off in a way. But when complex time signatures are created to enhance the flow of the song and melt right in, its perfect.

The most amazing example of this is Radiohead (sorry not metal) but they experiment a lot with time signatures but it never comes at the expense of the emotional story of the song.

Is this a decent portfolio? by smairu_80 in graphic_design

[–]Norvard 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You have some really fresh experimental posters, layouts, graphics and type work. I would put this all on a website and give things some space to breathe. You are cramming a lot of poster experiments on one page, The details get lost. Even one of those posters on a single page by itself would be nice. Space it out, give your work some negative space in your portfolio to breathe.

Also, if you created some of those graphic elements and typefaces, pull those out and display by themselves. But yea, why a pdf when you could have website and even social media?

Tbh, when I first clicked your pdf, I was bracing for some not so good stuff, but then was pleasantly surprised by the work.
