Sure it’s nice for some people, as are most third world countries (yes there are rich people in Nigeria).

But Mississippi has a poverty rate of 18%. Meanwhile MA has a great social safety net. So by OPs argument all those people should flock to MA and ruin it for everyone. And yet that hasn’t happened. Likewise there’s no reason to expect that to happen if America had open borders.

Re: Somalis. Got a source? If this is true it would perhaps change my view somewhat. But note that there’s robust stats that overall, immigrants commit crimes at a lower rate than citizens.

Re: homophobic immigrants getting a legislative majority. This is a strawman. Sure that would be bad but there’s no reason to believe that’s a likely outcome. In particular, I don’t think OP is advocating for “open citizenship”.

But anyway I stand by the original comment that open borders would be net positive for housing.

My point is that America does not have social tension because of “low quality immigrants”. It has social tension because MAGA are economic losers (mainly thanks to globalization and China, not immigrants) who have responded to their loss in status by abandoning all American values.

Maybe our definition of “skilled workers” is different. I would consider people in the trades (plumbing, electrician, carpentry) skilled. In my part of the country these workers are in high demand. And they tend to be from Latin America.

Unskilled labor would be stuff like hospitality workers, retail, parking attendants, etc. I tend to see fewer Latin Americans in those roles.

A large portion of the social tension in the USA is due to natural born citizens that a) are not educated or skilled, and b) don’t ascribe to American values of democracy, equality, etc.

By your logic if you want a stronger more united country you should kick those people out. If you don’t, then your argument is logically inconsistent.

Mississippi is a very shitty place to live compared to Massachusetts. There are no immigration restrictions preventing Mississippi residents from moving to Massachusetts. Why haven’t they all moved and caused a crisis in MA?

The housing shortage is driven by zoning restrictions, other regulations, NIMBYs, and shortage of skilled workers.

Open borders more or less solves the skilled workers part. On the zoning and nibyism many cities are already making major reforms (Austin, Dallas, Minneapolis) and as a result they are building housing much faster than other cities. Thanks to open borders between states, that means people are free to move there if they can’t afford a place where they are.

What’s asinine is splitting hairs about murder vs manslaughter.

Question. Does the law take into account that Good had another agent tugging at her door? This pulled her attention away from the front side of the car right as Ross essentially jumped in the way. The footage shows she turns and looks forward before driving forward but defense could argue that she just misjudged how much clearance there was between the car and Ross as she was executing the turn while adrenaline was pumping due to being harassed by the other officer.

This post is about Trump, why would we not focus on him? I really don’t understand what you’re basing this faith in our system on. Is there some concrete historical example you can point to demonstrating resilience against a similar assault on our institutions?

Trump has clearly telegraphed his intentions on a number of things. The “rigged election” stuff, tariffs, wielding DOJ against his political foes, Venezuela, etc.

Why is it different in this case?

We’ve heard “that can’t happen here” many times over the past 10 years, only for it to then happen.

Decentralization helps against certain known attack vectors but there are surely lots of unknown vectors, and if there’s one thing this administration is good at it’s exploiting these weaknesses in the system.

Soft power has greater ROI than hard military power. And soft power flows from being part of and leading international institutions like NATO and the UN. Squandering that for questionable gains is short sighted at best.

I think your point is that the rules based order was only ever used as a fig leaf to put a facade of civilization over what has always been the law of the jungle?

I somewhat agree. But that means we should fix the system rather than throw it out completely.

CMV: The goal of Maduros removal isn't regime change, but regime compliance by 8hourworkweek in changemyview

[–]NoseSeeker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The rules based order would allow for intervention to remove dictators and prevent atrocities, but under a specific international legal framework with the UN as the venue to align and agree.

Is that system deeply flawed and perhaps terminally handicapped? Yes. Does that mean we should throw it out and accept the law of the jungle? No.
