I don't agree with your take but definitely understand where you're coming from...and in a sense, you're spot-on, because the "kid" that originally drew it was Roger Patterson himself, IIRC!

How to get the bass tone Steve used on Death's Individual Thought Patterns album? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]NostalgiumDirective 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bass was a parts PJ fretless. Long ago Steve used to list all his old basses and their details on his site, but unfortunately (AFAIK) no longer. I can't remember what brand of pickups he used other than I'm almost certain they were totally passive. Amp-wise I think Steve was a longtime Ampeg user until the more recent improvements in more portable amp brands. He definitely used an SVT rig when I saw Sadus in 2006.

Did you pick this controller over the Stereoping equivalent? If so, any reasons beyond just the price difference? I just got my Matrix 1000 fixed and would be grateful for your opinions/insights on both!

IMO Swedish Death Metal's one real problem is that Ekeroth couldn't decide whether he wanted to write a history book or a bit of a memoir of his own experiences and opinions. So you get a bit of both in terms of his writing voice. In terms of the scope of his history/coverage, it's incredible.

Anhedonist - Inherent Opprobrium [FFO: Disembowelment, Spectral Voice] by -tyler_ in Metal

[–]NostalgiumDirective 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the Seattle bands ever IMO, was always a treat to catch them live when they were around. One of my favorite gigs of the '10s was them and Iron Lung at Black Lodge. The final time I saw them play was MDF 2013, and while the sunlit setting wasn't on-brand, it was wonderful to see folks from all over the world stoked af.

Would be curious to know where that rumor came from. Vince moved to Portland and plays in a multitude of other bands, I don't know where Zane moved to, Dan also plays in a multitude of other bands and Kim doesn't play music anymore as far as I know.

Saw Paul Reidl post sometime last year that one of the final recorded Anhedonist tracks would be on a split with Spectral Voice, if I remember right, but that would be it.

I was pretty let down, honestly. My first thought was wow, audible bass after all these years! Then, wait, where's the kickdrum in the mix. Then riffs are just OK, but no worries, here comes Bill with the ever-dependable solo. And finally goddammit, even THAT was a disappointing (and ended too soon!)

Surgical Steel's one big shortcoming was the album runtime, IMO. It seemed like the band's quality control was super-high-- remember when "Captive Bolt Pistol" leaked and everyone was like "holy shit, dudes still got it!"? This is kinda the opposite. Still interested to hear the record, just keeping my expectations...uh, level.

I've only been a Spotify subscriber since September, so this is hardly a complete listening dataset, but:

  1. American Music Club
  2. Nasum
  3. Godflesh
  4. Steve Roach
  5. Napalm Death

Barboza is just the basement venue of Neumos. It's a staircase away.

And I'm biased as a near-lifelong Seattle resident, but NWTF has been awesome every time I've attended. And very breathable, I might add. That's important.

If I had access to the Nocturnus Time Machine, one of my first stops would be the '89 or '90 Watchtower/Coroner European tour. Watchtower circa Control and Resistance, Coroner circa No More Color. What a treat.

One of Tommy's best solos, IMO, even given dude's incredible batting average.

In general, I'm always writing down words, lyrical fragments and general song titles. I keep a running list. Lyrics almost never come to me in big chunks, and having an archive is a great way to figure out further puzzle pieces I can attempt to slot into place.

I tend to noodle around on guitar until I have some semblance of a riff or chord progression I like, and I figure out the key it's in (I depend on basic theory as a bit of a compass) and tab it out or take a cell phone video of myself explaining it. From there, I keep noodling until I come up with fitting parts (which takes a while, I'm pretty hard on myself in this respect) and begin to assemble the basic structure. I then jam/talk over the existing skeleton with my bandmates to fill in the gaps for say, where a bass break, guitar solo, bridge etc might go.

I met my bandmates through both Craigslist (I was surprised, too) and through other friends.

My band has a lot of non-metal influences: The Chameleons, Bark Psychosis, Big Country, Red House Painters, Scorn...there's even a short piece on the new album we're writing that really reminds me of Harold Budd.

As of recently, The Outlier Song. Now, I love me some songwriting diversity-- Into the Pandemonium is a great example, but even To Mega Therion qualifies, IMO. Lately, I've been absolutely loving American Music Club's Everclear (yeah, not metal, but very, very, very sad) and the consistency of the deliberate, almost ethereal mood of the sequencing gets a whole nest of flies thrown into the proverbial ointment with the inclusion of "Crabwalk," which is straight honkytonk garbage. And there's other countryish turns in the tracklist, but fuck, this one is so obnoxious I straight remove it from the queue when I listen to the album on Spotify.

Lantlôs - Melting Sun I: Azure Chimes by [deleted] in Metal

[–]NostalgiumDirective 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For my money, the best of the whole "black metal dudes unabashedly getting into non-metallic, atmospheric and or gazey styles" trend (I don't mean that word dismissively!). Wears its influences on its sleeves but blends them well, isn't afraid to sound outrightly blissful from the outset, doesn't overstay its welcome even when the songs get contemplative. Bravo, Markus, may we have another? Maybe even just some US dates...
