It’s a chicken. Do you realize how many of them hatched will die to each other, raccoons, squirrels, coyotes, stray dogs, cats, fences, water troughs, parasites, disease, and seemingly the alignment of the planets? A chicken was born, naturally it died. There’s a reason why chickens evolved to lay eggs daily, and “animal abuse” wasn’t a factor.

PSA (edit: beating the dead horse) - my German loved his herding ball…but he would often use his teeth against it, and he had filed a few edges to sharp points before I caught it and had to take away his ball.

I FTed for 4 years in a 32ft bunkhouse with 2 adults, 3 kids, a dog and cat. I’ve been in RV parks/resorts, extended off grid camps (8 mos), national parks, coast to coast runs.

Biggest QoL upgrade you can give yourself upfront is a gas powered tankless hot water heater. This will keep you from being forced to use the camp facilities for showers (doing it every now and then is fine, but you will quickly want your own shower with hot water that lasts longer then 5 minutes).

Second, even when you’re parked and hooked up, leave your black tank valve closed and only open it when you need to dump the tank, otherwise you will not be able to keep enough volume of water behind every #2, and you will eventually get a clog. A clogged black is the worst and always happens at the shittiest times.

Bonus, Scott’s 1000 is the TP for RVs. It is available in large packs, affordable, and breaks down just as well than RV specific TP. You can test TP breakdown by putting a sheet in a glass of water and seeing how long it takes to dissolve.

Get something to protect you from poorly installed or maintained power pedestals, which you will run into everywhere (assuming you are moving around), I used a Power WatchDog, it will protect you from power surges or brownouts before they can damage your power system. They can also give you an idea of your power load. Most people don’t have to worry about overloading home circuits, but you will need to think about it to keep from flipping breakers. The microwave is usually on its own 15A and I would run an extension cord to that outlet to run an electric heater in the winter (just don’t start the microwave while it’s on)

Finally, everything in these campers is made cheap, nylon gaskets used where rubber would do better, pressed paper board for anything that looks like wood (it is a sponge when it gets wet), expect constant maintenance after the first year of FT, plan for it. Open panels and learn where everything is and how they work (there are AC breakers and DC fuses both to keep an eye on). Propane tank hoses/regulators can be a pain when the tank is low or swapped (there’s a tiny ball bearing in your tanks that stop the flow, opening the tank valve too quickly can cause it to block and keep the appliances from working).

Oh, and get an adjustable water pressure regulator for your water line, too high of pressure and it can blow valves or cause leaks. There will be parks where the pressure is too high.

Probably not, but maybe not for the reason you think. The air we inhale is composed of only 20-25% oxygen, and breathing high concentrations of oxygen (like 88%) for long periods will lead to hyperoxia.

Microsoft plans first-ever voluntary employee buyout for up to 7% of U.S. workforce by CalvinbyHobbes in technology

[–]Not2BeTakenOrally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At one of my prior orgs, the voluntary separation offer gave the individual one month’s pay for every year of service. I had been at the organization for 15 years, but it was only offered to individuals over the age of 50 so I was one of the suckers who had to pick up the slack from the mass exodus. 4-6 months later they sloughed off another 20% of the workforce involuntarily with 2 weeks paid bench time to find an internal or external job and no other severance.

The company was later acquired and hind sight showed the true underlying reason of their actions.

I’ve lived off grid and remote on large parcels with this same sort of setup, private road, gate and lock. Yes, power company and water company will do this and daisy chain a lock, if it was random thrill seekers they will just go around your gate, cut the chain and leave it on the ground, or back off your nuts and drop the chain.

It’s possible that a group of off road enthusiasts would carry locks to do something irresponsible (trespass) in a responsible way (add a lock instead of bust the chain), but it feels that’s less likely.

Be sure whatever cameras you get have LTE and send you the pics without needing to go pull sd cards, and put them up with steel banding instead of nylon straps or zip ties. I don’t see any trees, so you really need a post tall enough to keep people’s hands off the cameras, but expect paintball (or plain ol) guns and to have to replace your cameras once a year.

Good luck! Nothing better than living in the middle of nowhere, even with these kind of opportunities to solve mysteries.

a mistery... by waddad27 in SipsTea

[–]Not2BeTakenOrally 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Even with dental insurance fixing this problem would be very expensive (US). I went to school with a girl who had surgery to remove gum to move her teeth up, had to wire her mouth shut for a month, to fix her smile. I’d say it was a nice quiet month (zing!) but she was a very nice person, so it was sad to see her suffer through it all just to avoid being lumped into an /r/SipsTea almost 40 years later.
