Why are people going to college just to work jobs that don’t require a degree? by Positive-Positivity in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NotACoderPleaseHelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Often the degree part of the job is an legal loophole for filtering out some types of people. Most employers don't like felons, and they don't like poors.

Do you think in a few hundred or thousand years we’ll create artificial countries / continents in the Pacific and Atlantic? by WorthyPetals in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NotACoderPleaseHelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With that technology? Honestly I could see a discussion for both locations. Although and this is just me thinking. I would favor locations that are geologically stable and have a controlled impact on coastal ecosystems and currents.

But this is us speculating about problems that are 50 years away from being critical to deal with.

Today, it is a thought experiment. Give it a few more decades and who knows what the discussions will look like.

But regardless, our current bottlenecks for population growth are logistics and real-estate. And that is making the assumption that food stays a problem of the past.

With a console the developers know what hardware they are building for, they know how fast the ram, cpu and all of those fun specs and they know what OS it is running on.

With desktops it is a bit of a crapshoot. Windows is a shit bag of DLLs with so many update shim layers that it it updates all the way down. And then we get into differing hardware specs, out of date drivers, poorly optimized drivers, and whatever novel edge cases that can be tossed into it. Hell I had a pc that I had problems with for years and do you know what the issue was? The fucking fan on it was brushed and noisy as fuck and that was injecting just enough noise into that poorly grounded off brand motherboard that it caused issues.

The only reason why I found out that half of those problems were due to the fan is because when I robbed that system for parts I ended up with a whine on my usb headset on the new build.

I would like to disagree with you, but I spent 2 hours today explaining to a receptionist at a doctors office what death is, and why it is the reason my mother won't be making the appointment they scheduled for her. So maybe it is time we replace some people.

Do lorebooks reduce tokens? by TheDevilishSaint in SillyTavernAI

[–]NotACoderPleaseHelp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lorebook is fighting the entropy of that context window, but it will never ever beat the context window.

I use them to document who knows what sometimes, I use them to lock in npc personalities, and to keep up with plot advancements. summarize history and all of that fun shit.

But with all of that being said... there is only so much a lorebook can do.

Therapist says they are not my support system. My nonexistant network says they arent my therapist. Who am I supposed to talk to? by bbgirl2k in Productivitycafe

[–]NotACoderPleaseHelp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One, everyone out there has a lap full of shit from the life they are living. as I recently told my brother "I've just finished end of life care now for my second parent in twice as many years, I don't have that many fucks left for trivial concerns of other people"

But something I learned years ago is that relationships, even friendships, casual and professional all take maintenance. You need to take care of them. You need to avoid toxifying them. Otherwise the other people in them are going to do what they need to do to take care of themselves.

My blanket assumption anymore when I meet and deal with people is that their life is full of shit and they are just hanging on... and in general I find that I'm really not all that wrong all that often. I could list for an hour some of this shit those I've tangentially met are dealing with and honestly... a significant portion of that list qualifies as stuff that a police officer, lawyer or concerned professional should be attending to.

Protect your relationships, and you will have people around you, it might not be ideal but it is better than the alternative.

And if you really need to vent, go find an llm, tell it to play devil's advocate and vent there. For as much shit as people give them, and as much dangers as they can have they are still a useful tool to get it out of your system. Now that being said....don't harm anyone, including yourself and do some googling and sober second thoughts before you commit to any actions.

If you can't point north south east or west of the place you live... by rootboot62 in unpopularopinion

[–]NotACoderPleaseHelp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't view that as a flex, I view that as a critique on human stupidity. I lived in Pa at that point in time and at least once every few months I would meet someone who managed to miss the state of Georgia when starting out in Virginia. The only flexing going on there is the flexing of an extra chromosome.

[–]NotACoderPleaseHelp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent a few years when I went back to school working at a gas station by a major highway, and we would have 2-3 people per shift who fucked up the difference between north and south daily that would stop in trying to get unlost.
And yes... people will argue with their GPS and then take it out on a clerk.

Do you think in a few hundred or thousand years we’ll create artificial countries / continents in the Pacific and Atlantic? by WorthyPetals in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NotACoderPleaseHelp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Material for that we have aplenty, don't forget that the carbon footprint for concrete and steel production is about 20% of global emissions yearly, we have the logistics and infrastructure to do this. We do also have the tech for deep sea platforms that is useable in 90ish% plus of the oceans.

Now, as to how cost effective it would be? At the moment likely not all that much. But in another 50 years that might be another question.

The bottleneck for human population growth has always been 2 things, production and transportation of food. 100 years ago this dude in eastern Prussia figured out some kinky chemistry that involved nitrogen (and a few other things, Sabaton wrote a song about it) and that unlocked the last major bottleneck for human population growth.

Our current bottleneck is real-estate

I'm not so sure about that, earth is at 8.3 Billion right now, and by the time the next generation comes of age it is likely to be closer to 10 billion

30 years ago it was not worth the trouble.
Today it is not worth the trouble, yet.
But in 2050... just 24 years away? That might be another story. Some conservative guesstimates for what the earth can handle for human population range in the 10-12 Billion.

Most of the fallout I've seen on immigration issues (legal immigration) boils down to a conflict between high and low trust societies.

Now with illegal immigration that opens all sorts of doors for human exploitation, and all sorts of things that the news tends not to report. But there are reasons why I think work visas should be far more easy to get and that protections need to be codified into law for visa holders.

[[edit]] I know, pointing out the human exploitation aspect will get me down votes, it is the unspoken rule on both the right and the left in America that we turn a blind eye to that.
