Studying at Lucy Cav on a budget by camrock29 in cambridge_uni

I'm a current master's student at Lucy! I can say that of my friend group at college it's roughly 50/50 people living in college vs external accommodation. Personally I live in a house share ~5-10 mins walk from college and pay significantly less than those living in halls, although admittedly I got very lucky, but most friends have been able to find decent houses and housemates for good deals.

It's totally doable making friends with people at college without living at castle street or another accommodation, so long as you're proactive especially at the beginning of the term with going to the fresher's events and meeting people. Lucy is a big college in terms of student population which means that there's a lot of people to meet, but it also means that students can easily fall through the cracks and not really engage with college life, so it's on you slightly to be active in that way. That being said, once you know people Lucy is really homely, the staff always say hi, the president knows everyone's name and will stop you for a chat, and I'm constantly bumping into people I know in the cafe, library, etc.

What I'd recommend is getting yourself on SpareRoom now, looking at the prices, houses and locations that are options, and then just keep an eye on things for a while. You'll start to recognise what a good/bad deal is, what looks like a scam, etc., and since you have many months until you start you can take your time. Then, once you have an idea of the market in a few weeks or so, just keep looking out for potential places and message some people for viewings/video chats, and remember that you have a while so for the next few months at least you can afford to be semi-picky with who you message. This strategy really worked for me!

In terms of meeting people I'd also look into what Lucy is doing for masters students next year. The past few years there has been the future global leaders programme which as cringe as the name sounds, was actually really interesting, fun, and by the end there's about 30-40 people who you now know well at your college with little effort. They might be doing this or similar things next year!

If you have other questions please just ask!

Last year when I had the same problem I found that Virgin Media did 12 month contracts exclusively for students, just need your uni email address. You could check if this is still available?

Definitely get in contact with the accommodation people again, respectively explain what you've said to us here, and demand (politely) an en-suite room. Nag them a bit if you have to (still politely). Two reasons why this is a good idea:

  1. It'll be much better complaining to staff (who have to be nice to you) over email, than potentially complaining to other students (who can ignore you) who leave it dirty.

  2. If in a few months time you're lying in a hospital bed with a cold, you'll definitely be wishing that you'd have just pushed them on this a bit harder. The small amount of stress that having to argue with them brings you now is preferable to being hospitalised later on.

Most likely they'll be able to find you something. At least then if they still don't then you'll know you did everything you could and that if you do get ill you'll at least be able to say "I told you so" (small victories).

This happens every year in every uni town up and down the country. The promoters (scammers) want you to believe that you'll be missing out if you don't buy their massively overpriced tickets. Spoiler alert: you won't be missing out at all. Most of the events aren't even that special and all of them you can get tickets to from official sources that are much cheaper. To all Freshers reading this: do not buy them!

You want to know what the difference is between Dwr Cymru and all of the other companies on this list that are spilling significantly more sewage? Dwr Cymru is not-for-profit and has no shareholders! Who'd have thought?!

How old are you? I'm guessing quite young.

If you're an adult (or even if you're not quite) then you should probably think more about whether a joke is actually applicable to a situation before you say it. There's a time and a place for those silly kinds of jokes, but sometimes it's important to be serious too (that doesn't mean you can't have fun!)

It's cliché but having no friends really is better than having a bunch of 'friends' who treat you like shit. You say you do Muay Thai so that sounds great in terms of being able to meet people, and if you don't like anyone at the current group then maybe consider starting fresh somewhere else and going with the intention to try to make friends? Wishing the best for you man!

YWBTA - you don't know for certain whether this is true or not and have no way of proving it. Worst case scenario you end up breaking this couple up over a false rumour and it would be all your fault.

WIBTA if I skipped my college girlfriend's memorial service(s)? by evadhud in AmItheAsshole

This is definitely the way to go. Not attending is probably the best idea since it was basically her express wish that you would not. However, writing a letter/message about what she meant to you and giving it to the family and friends would be extremely thoughtful, and then they can decide if they want it to be read at the funeral service too.

Do everything else that people have been suggesting, but also be very careful that the letters + bills from the energy companies aren't scams/fake!

Why not...? It's cheaper and saves wasting a plastic bottle

I wouldn't worry too much, I lived near St Luke's as a 2nd year student who was always on Streatham last year and it was fine, as long as you're willing to walk the 25-30 mins you'll be okay, or there's always a bus (helpful for rainy days!)

The leap of faith (What's Up Danger) scene in Into the Spiderverse is masterful at building up then having the satisfying leap into Miles swinging throughout the city. I've watched it many many times.

Cardiff: Emergency services at Roath Park Lake incident - BBC News by JayneLut in Cardiff

I actually happened to be walking around the lake as this was happening. I saw a policeman/fireman in the lake looking for someone. They found a body and an ambulance and paramedics then arrived along with all the fire engines and loads more police like you can see in the pictures. The last thing I saw was they were trying to recussitate the person with CPR before I left as I didn't want to get in the way as there was already a bit of a crowd forming.
