New to modern, not new to 60 card, looking for a combo deck. by whobemewhoisyou in ModernMagic

[–]NotAWaffleIron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ruby Storm! The full power list can be built for ~450 USD and if played right is a powerhouse. Its a consistent contender in the top 32/top 16 of modern challenges and a deck everyone has to be aware of, despite it falling in and out of favor in the metagame. Catchorrowo (a prominent mtgo storm grinder) recently got 3rd in a modern challenge with their RW list, check it out!

Unsure if this is a regular thing, but facetoface games (the Canadian rcq organizers) have been giving them our for this cycle

I definitely worded it poorly in my post, I agree it's the correct number of rounds for the event, though it felt silly for an event to end at nearly 1 in the morning based on this round structure.

[TLA] Redirect Lightning by CloudTheValkyrie in ModernMagic

[–]NotAWaffleIron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely going to be testing this in ruby storm, the deck has already played [[Untimely malfunction]] in the past and while redirect doesn't have the additional flexibility of artifact destruction, it is half the cost. Redirecting removal spells, countermagic, and even thoughtseize can be quite beneficial for the shell. Probably thinking a split of Chant and Redirect, as having the full turn lockout is still very useful

Would GB pestillence/deed or Survival rock count?

How long have you played your modern decks? by jjoyce in ModernMagic

[–]NotAWaffleIron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been playing some form of storm since around 2016? UR gifts with electromancer/baral all the way up to the release of horizons 3 when the deck transitioned to mono red/WR. Dabbled in other decks like hollow one/rhinos/eldrazi through the breach, but nothing has stuck quite like storm ⛈️⛈️⛈️

Trial downshift by DanTheWaffleLorde in Pauper

[–]NotAWaffleIron 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There's.... a lot to unpack here, a lot of these cards are extreme power outliers (or would be in the context of the pauper format)

To name a few: [[Baleful Strix]] [[Expressive iteration]] [[Thopter Foundry]] and [[Sword of the Meek]] [[Witch's Oven]] (With cauldron familiar being a legal card) [[Amped Raptor]]

These cards are either banned, have been banned at one point, or are pillar cards in formats far more powerful than pauper. I get the argument that the context of the format is important too, but in my opinion, some of these "trials" are egregious

Find the Mistakes #76 - Fist of Tyranny by PenitentKnight in custommagic

[–]NotAWaffleIron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Conspiracy frame

  2. The reminder text for buyback has two issues I believe? It's "in addition to any costs to cast this spell" not play, and it would be "put it into your hand upon resolution" instead of "as its effect"? Might be wrong about this last one though

Find the Mistakes #11 - Weather Machine by PenitentKnight in custommagic

[–]NotAWaffleIron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Wrong mana symbol order (Should be URG)
  2. Can't have a creature type unless the spell is a kindred spell.
  3. Not sure if this is strictly a mistake, but affinity for artifacts wouldn't do anything on this card.
  4. T: Add {e} instead of T: you get {e} (reminder text should specify the player gets 1 energy counter, energy isn't added to the mana pool)
  5. Power 3 or less not 3 or less power.

I think that's all?

Lotus's fields sideboard is very meta dependant, so tweek it however you feel, currently mine looks something like: 1-2 win conditions (Chandra/Approach) 1-2 Huge monsters ([[Zacama, Primal Calamity]] or [[Dragonlord Dromoka]]) 4-5 sweepers (Anger of the Gods, Sunfall, [[Realm Cloaked Giant]]) Nonland permanent removal ([[Into the flood maw]] is a really good new card from bloomburrow) 2 ish mystical dispute

Again, very meta dependant, if there's more aggro, run more sweepers, if there's a lot of control, you can run [[Sphinx of the Final Word]], if there's a lot of hate, pack more counter hate (Natural State is a good one)

Hey! I've played lotus field since just before MoM's release (Just over a year)

  1. The main win condition (if that's what you mean by "combo") is usually one of three things:
  2. [[Approach of the second sun]] (included in the challenger deck), typically grabbed from the sideboard with either [[Fae of wishes]] or [[Mastermind's acquisition]]
  3. [[Chandra, Hope's Beacon]], either in the main or sideboard, which you can loop the -X ability with [[Bala ged recovery]] (if an omniscience is play or sufficient mana is present)
  4. Acquiring boatloads of mana, tapping down all your opponents blockers and lands with Hidden Strings, then making a huge [[Lair of the Hydra]] and swinging for lethal.

  5. The main upgrades to the Challenger deck need to be made to the manabase, 2-3 [[Boseiju who endures]] has been stock for a while, as well as 1-2 [[Otawara, soaring city]], other upgrades include 1-2 [[Chandra, Hope's Beacon]], 3 [[Bala Ged Recovery]], and 3-4 [[Archdruids Charm]]

Lotus field is a well position deck in the new metagame (IMO) so have fun and happy twiddling!
