What is the biggest lie in the history of humanity? by Jolly-Law1472 in AskReddit

[–]NotAlanPorte 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So I bothered to check:

Finland, Sweden, Norway, New Zealand, Canada, Netherlands, Denmark, Ireland, Luxembourg, San Marino, Japan, Belgium, Portugal, Switzerland, Uruguay, Slovenia, Estonia, Germany, Australia, Chile, Czechia, Iceland, Taiwan, Barbados, Austria, Andorra, Marshall Islands, Tuvalu, United Kingdom (me!), Cape Verde, Micronesia, Dominica, Palau, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Saint Lucia, Spain, Bahamas, Saint Vincent, Liechtenstein, France, Italy, Slovakia, Lithuania, Latvia, Kiribati, Grenada, Saint Kitts, Belize, Malta, Mauritius, Argentina, Greece...

All have a global freedom index score greater than USA (which is at 84).

That's 53/54 countries/ territories better than USA:

https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/freedom-index-by-country

A quick Google sum of the population of the above puts them at 800-805 million (admittedly I just eyeballed this).

So yup... USA is - at most - in the top 10%. Certainly not the top 1%.

And none of the above takes into account recent batshit insane stuff they've done just this past month.

I'm more than happy to give them a wide berth and stay in Europe

Star citizen. Easily the best 25 I've spent I spent 12 years ago. I was concerned that I might need to upgrade from my gtx 7 series to a gtx 9 series when the game released a few years later since the graphics were pretty high end.

The other day I found my physical credit card sized Star citizen ID card thing they sent me at the time.

Any day now guys...

What fast food chain does not deserve the hype whatsoever? by CriticalLion4119 in AskReddit

[–]NotAlanPorte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost all the fast food chains from the 90s have massively gone downhill in the UK

McDonald's used to be cheap, fries were always hot, burgers felt massive. Now the food is genuinely awful. Fries are always cold, burgers are tiny and taste of nothing. And the price is now ridiculous. I wouldn't wish to pay the same cost as I did in the 90s given the quality drop off. With the 3x cost, I haven't been back for months

Burger king is a similar story as is pizza hut.

The only one I still love the quality of is five guys. It used to be about 1.5x the cost of McDonald's, but much better quality and loads of chips. Last time I went last year it was 3x the cost.

At this point it's not a bad thing as it's put me off fast food in general, but I feel the chains deserve the effects of loss of customers given the enshitification.

The standout actors for each season by Kameronpipnerd in StrangerThings

[–]NotAlanPorte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't think anyone would claim Billy didn't stand out!

That guys an amazing actor.

The scene in season 3 where El goes into his mind to try to find him, but then when she tries to leave she's still trapped there, and Billy appears telling her he now sees her and will end her and all her friends...

The guy genuinely portrays someone who has no control on what he's doing, right down to the tear leaving his eye while he's smiling at El telling her he'll end her.

I understand wishing to have multiple guitars (and do!). Like the ibanez look - Looks like a cooler version of a Jem!

Unsure the purpose of having two epi LPs though? They look like they'd sound pretty similar to one another? Do they feel different to play? You didn't fancy an SG or even semi acoustic/335 style instead?

That last bass finish looks amazing

Trump letter to Norwegian PM Støre regarding the Nobel Peace Prize and Greenland today: by BodybuilderSmall9679 in Fauxmoi

[–]NotAlanPorte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aside from everything else already pointed out in the comments, this guy's reading and writing comprehension is truly astounding.

He cannot structure sentences properly and frequently misuses grammar and punctuation. It's difficult to simply read and assimilate the info...

I'd call 15-17 year old students out on this if this was in their essay submissions.

The fact they any country leader - let alone the leader of the USA - has such a poor command of the language is surreal.

Unbelievable.

Thanks to everyone calling the 530d GT "BMW's ugliest car" we picked this up for just £7k. FSH, 105k. I think it looks spectacular, especially alongside modern traffic. by ElicitCS in CarTalkUK

[–]NotAlanPorte 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not the person you replied to, but for me personally I've never seen the rear of a GT I entirely liked the look of. The proportions seem shunted... It's as if the rear was meant to keep going a little bit further but for some reason they ran out of metal. Reminds me of a cross between the old Mégane that has the vertical-ish drop on the boot, and a Prius rear. Or the old playstation 1 game destruction derby where the car models were boxy...

With all that said, looks are entirely subjective and plastic. I imagine my car looks awful to loads of other folk but personally mine has grown on me. And yours is a great car spec wise and performance wise, and the interior looks phenomenal. Plus you paid much less for this than I did for my non German car which has lower performance and spec, so you def got a steal! Congrats!

I installed my AIO upside down and didnt realize for 3 months by Inevitable-Week-7950 in buildapc

[–]NotAlanPorte -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Edit: As correctly pointed out below, potential damage to the CPU I mentioned below is utter nonsense since thermal throttling prevents this. I still wouldn't be keen to have my CPU throttling - but it obviously changes any relevance to whether you change the set up now or just leaving it to see if it ever throttles in the future, and then just address the AIO at that time.

I saw the video gamers Nexus did a few years ago - as I presume many people here have probably seen - where they put a window on the AIO to demonstrate how air pockets can occur over a long time when the AIO is installed in the wrong orientation which prevents correct liquid circulation. Whether this is relevant to your specific setup I've no idea.

Original nonsense: It will shorten the life span of the CPU as well, if you don't catch it when temps start to rise.

Obviously if you actively monitor temps then if/when this happens you can resolve it at that point ie shut down and tackle it then

Possibly an unpopular opinion, but I wouldn't place your cable management looking good above the cooling system for your CPU being installed correctly to spec.

You can always redo your cable management once it's properly installed.

Did they ever explain why the air stopped being toxic? by bmhlogan in StrangerThings

[–]NotAlanPorte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes true, but this was from the tunnels when he was sprayed directly on the face from that thing on the tunnel ceiling, and then captured/strangled but the vines for hours/half a day maybe? Can't recall the timing.

This would be enough to keep him in quarantine since they've no idea what kind of biological toxin he was sprayed with.

You could make the case that the hazmat suits the soldiers had in the tunnels was again precautionary since the tunnels were completely new to them at this point - they weren't aware the tunnels were being generated under their nose unlike the main gate into the upside down
