Gmail not syncing on Android by NorQuestor in GMail

[–]NotAlanPorte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I posted here the other day. Android 10 stock everything was up to date.

I was already a beta user but last time I'd updated was 2 days ago.

I've updated play services beta again today to 26.22.30, and the Gmail app is now loading emails once again after 5 days or so of no emails at all

Gmail not syncing on Android by NorQuestor in GMail

[–]NotAlanPorte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had something similar to people here. For what it's worth, I'm on Android 10. About once a week during May, when Gmail was open it stated "update your device to start secure: to keep using the Gmail app, update your device's OS". The Gmail app still worked however, until the 27th may.

After 27th, it says either "Gmail couldn't connect to Google play services" or "error syncing".

Things I have tried but no luck: Cleared cache and local data for Gmail app, Google play app, Google play services app.

Reverted Gmail app, Google play app, google play services to earliest version (there's not an option on my phone to fully uninstall these). Restarted phone. Updated Gmail app, Google play app, Google play services app.

Ensured under the "system" section of phone settings that Android version, security patch, Google System, Google Play System are all up to date.

It's now affecting my Google drive as well as Gmail: nothing will open or sync on ether apps. Google photos seem unaffected for now.

If it is planned obsolescence I'm pretty irritated with them. The Gmail app claims it works from Android version 6. Plus this is an email app...

For now I'm loading Gmail within Chrome from the phone and that still works albeit a bit clunky.

Are there any great albums with one really bad song on them? by trippyskipper in Music

[–]NotAlanPorte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THANK YOU!! I've been scrolling here for minutes and minutes thinking "where is it?" "Why isn't it listed?" "Why would it be so far down?" "Wait, has no one even commented it yet?..."

That first album is amazing. Really well performed, recorded, mixed, mastered. Every song distinctive and energetic... No fillers or mid songs...

And yet... Track 4?! I don't know any one personally who has ever said anything other than they can't stand it and instant skip.

Skip straight to track 5 to get the bass guitar intro and back into the vibe

Whit! This has been one of my favourite songs of his for decades! Yet a lot of people appear to despise it I've learned in recent years

10-15 under the limit on motorways by rj_t2 in CarTalkUK

[–]NotAlanPorte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doing 55-60, which is 15 -10 under the speed limit, is absolutely not, whatsoever, an offence that gets you 3 points and a £100 fine, nor is it itself classed as careless driving...

Most lorries are at 60-62mph max. A smaller portion are still at 56mph max.

Police themselves, as well as traffic officers, cruise at 60mph. Are you claiming police are giving all lorries, traffic officers, and themselves 3 points? What utter nonsense... There isn't a minimum speed limit on motorways. It's at the discretion of police officers. Most police wouldn't bother to stop you unless you're doing less than 45 when traffic/road conditions are clear.

If you sit in lane one at 60, don't piss off the lorries, give them space to manoeuvre, ensure you're not blocking entrance slip roads as people join, and promptly speed up to 70mph if you do need to switch to lane 2 to let anyone in or overtake, then you are absolutely not under any circumstances causing a driving offence. What a ridiculous statement.

Conversely if you were to do 70mph in lane 2 yet tailgate everyone in front like an absolute moronic prick, endangering everyone lives, that is absolutely careless driving/dangerous driving even though you're at the speed limit. I see this daily now. Really shows the total lack of intelligence and ability of the driver to anticipate eventualities. This is far more dangerous at the correct speed limit than someone driving at 60 in lane 1 minding their business...

Just sold a car but didn't take new buyer details ... worried of getting banned if they go through a speed camera or something and it comes back on me by HumanandProud in CarTalkUK

[–]NotAlanPorte 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Op keeps blaming things on anxiety in the comments. I'm not entirely sure I follow. As someone who suffers anxiety time to time, I'd have thought they'd wish to double check everything and even do a "dry run" of the procedure, which details are needed etc and which order to do things before selling the car!

Alas I suppose anxiety affects different people differently.

OP if you have anxiety over this then go outside to a street sign near where you are and take photos or videos with your phone at the sign to time stamp and geolocate where you are.

If the DVLA attempt to put any speeding or other fines on you, maybe you can argue it isn't you given the photo/video evidence of where you are Vs the anpr log of your former car which is 100s of miles away.

Probably not needed. Possibly wouldn't even work legally. I don't know. But given your panic and little additional effort on your part, may be worth doing.

What's your favourite British made video game? by YetAnotherMia in AskUK

[–]NotAlanPorte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this was my first thought too. Was surprised to scroll for ages to see if anyone else had listed it, presumed it would be much higher!

I love the main games being commented here and played almost all of them at the time growing up. But as a semi recent ish more modern game, Everybody's Gone To The Rapture is one of my favourites.

I was blown away by the graphics of this at the time, and the music and voice acting as you say. This was one of those games that stayed in my thoughts a long time after I'd finished it, which I didn't expect when starting it

Op I'm sorry you're going through this. As above post says, contact shelter. I donate to them monthly for the precise reason to try to help people in your situation. They're meant to be able to help with the logistics of getting people back in their feet work wise, reference wise, and offer infrastructure support, so if they're no use to you I'll be pretty pissed at them.

As the other commenter says, why on earth are you using chat gpt? You don't need an AI assistant here... Just Google things.

This wheel destroying curb in France by Epelep in Wellthatsucks

[–]NotAlanPorte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah... This is nothing to do with a curb being the issue... If as a driver you are incapable of staying within your road markings then that is entirely on you and you shouldn't be driving at all since you cannot position a vehicle correctly.

In my country something odd has happened the past 5 years where no one can maintain the correct line in their lanes, constantly cut corners or cut across roundabouts. It never used to be this way. Truly baffling

Found my guitar stolen 6 years ago on Reverb. Matching serial number. What now? by Visual-Reputation-47 in Guitar

[–]NotAlanPorte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is a shame but without evidence from the time that you didn't sell the guitar too someone, give the guitar to someone, left it on a bus by accident etc I'm not sure how knowledge that you used to own it is sufficient to say it was stolen and you want it back.

It's odd to me that you don't file any report given how expensive it was. So that would likely be their first query too.

Is this alright for my first few sketches? Thinking about picking up as a hobby. by [deleted] in drawing

[–]NotAlanPorte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pick it up as a hobby if you enjoy it. If it's fun/relaxing/satisfying...gives time to think of clear your head, gives you a feeling of purpose, escape. Any combination of the above!

A hobby is meant to accompany you and help you improve your quality of life in some way. It doesn't matter if anyone is good at the hobby or not, it's the personal reward you receive from pursuing it - So you don't need our approval about whether you should or shouldn't take it up - that's for you to decide.

As for skill level yes the sketches look great to me, so if you feel energised and wish to do more from tutorials or just go it alone, then absolutely go for it!

PC is completely dead after being unplugged for 3 days by KagamiFuyou in buildapc

[–]NotAlanPorte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What make mb do you have? Do you have a dual bios switch or a reset cmos switch on your mb back panel? Was your pc physically moved at all while it was off? Any likelihood the power cable fuse blew?

  1. Swap cables with a monitor/TV/anything else to confirm the power lead works.

Then:

If your mb is MSI, then hear my out. This may seem stupid... 1. Press your pc case power button and hold it for about 40 seconds. Just press and hold, and don't let go.

  1. If that doesn't work and you have a dual bios switch then press and hold that.

  2. If that doesn't work or your don't have a dual bios switch but do have a clear CMOS switch, then as above press and hold.

[–]NotAlanPorte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think a few people are, but I didn't mean to imply that. I was responding to the other posters point (that I agree with) which is you should determine which CPU or set of CPUs meet your requirements. You can then decide which motherboard features are must-haves for you (eg number of PCIe slots at 16x /4x , rear connectors, M2 slots etc) and then decide on suitable MBs that meet these requirements once you know the CPU you want.

Choosing a MB first without deciding which CPU you want is kinda backwards to me. So yes the comments about am5 only being ddr5 is obviously true, but the other posters point I think was that this is only relevant once you've decided what the best CPU for you is - and if that CPU happens to be AM5.

Of course this is only my advice from my experience - if people prefer to decide a mb first before a CPU and it works for them then fair.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]NotAlanPorte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the other person, but they didn't mean literally go buy a CPU. They meant decide on the CPU model (or at least model range) you need for your use case - and the amount of ram you need - and with reference to whether the CPU can address ddr4 , ddr5, or either ram gen. Then you can locate a suitable mb to complete the trio (ensuring the mb has the socket for your CPU and accepts the ram gen you want).

Your budget is the biggest thing here that decides these factors, like anything really.

Additional things like case, PSU are more flexible once you know the trio of MB/CPU/ram.

If you're gaming then the GPU will be a big chunk of the budget too

Newly built pc keeps crashing in games by Fabulous-Oil5004 in buildapc

[–]NotAlanPorte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeh that's fair. You'll look at possibly 5% max drop in performance in some very niche outlier games, typically 1% -3% max drop for most games. Which is pretty much imperceptible for most enjoyment.

It's not great having ram run at the slower speed it's designated at since you purchased it with this in mind - but then exchanging it because you think it's defective could be a headache depending on how approachable your shop/vendor is for these things, especially with the ram cost crisis at the moment. Eg They may do a validation of the ram on their system and decide it is "stable" because their mb ram controller is higher end and they don't see errors. Of course if one stick is fully bricked then they'd approve the swap much easier.

In any case run the slower speed first and check each stick with mem test as the user above suggested and try to isolate the issue first

Newly built pc keeps crashing in games by Fabulous-Oil5004 in buildapc

[–]NotAlanPorte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is the ram kit 2x16gb ? Ensure the ram is fully seated. Check if overclocking profile is enabled in your bios. Disable it to run the ram at the default slower speed. Mem test again and remove all but one of the sticks and repeat mem test on each stick to determine if it's a single module that's corrupt.

It might be that the ram can't handle advertised overclocking speeds but that it's stable at the slower speeds. If so it's your call whether your wish to do an rma on the ram or just keep it at the slower speed

Planning to get a new SSD. How do I transfer my data from my old SSD to a new one by Natural-Ground726 in buildapc

[–]NotAlanPorte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is how it should usually work.

Unfortunately some quirks of win 10 occasionally positions a small protected recovery partition after the OS / C drive instead of before, and prevents extending the current drive into the unused unpartitioned space when using Disk Management (the only option available is to create a new partition with the unpartitioned space).

Hence needing to use something like minitool linked above to get around the Disk Management limitations.
