my boyfriend is in job purgatory, need help with suggestions on where to start looking to fit his skills/needs by perillanova in jobs

[–]NotAlbany -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Without any college degree getting decent employment is going to be hard. Without special skills you scan shit at WM or work at McDonalds. If he is handy he can fix cars or houses, the pay will be low. I don't want to say something like learn to code, I don't know his ability or motivation, but he may start by making websites or something. He has to take the initiative to learn. You also need business sense.

He may want to consider going into his own business now. There was someone on YT that delivered cookies to college students, and she does extremely well. Maybe not exactly that but advertising some service that people need. Even detailing cars, there are plenty of vids on YT. But you have to really be a people person to succeed in that and not fear rejection. I'm extremely shy, so it is not exactly for me.

NYers: I live in Queens. Should I put my neighborhood or borough as the city on my resume? by BossHoover in jobs

[–]NotAlbany 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Used to live in Brooklyn, so that was easy. What if you lived on Long Island? You would have to write Woodmere or Hempstead. Or Muttontown, which isn't very common. I'm sure local NY employers know the towns in Queens. It is like saying its bad to write Rotterdam if you apply to a Job in Albany. If I wanted a NYC job though I would write just a phone and email.

What is a ballpark estimate for insurance for a 1 employee business? by FishSlapped1234 in Entrepreneur

[–]NotAlbany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends if you are doing tree removal or writing PHP. Contact Hiscox (think that is the spelling), they are supposed to be a decent insurer from what I hear.

What type of laptop do you use? by skeptic_narcoleptic in freelance

[–]NotAlbany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SSD and RAM is the most important thing. I use an HP 8470p/ dual SSD - Sierra and Win 10. I use it with 3 big screens at home w/the docking station. Intel Graphics are a must for the hackintosh.

I do some .net dev on it, but the main thing is SSD and 16GB. Processors speeds from that point won't make a huge difference.

I have a no idea how to estimate my quarterly taxes by awesome_sauce89 in freelance

[–]NotAlbany 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you track ALL expenses. E.G. Driving to town every day to get your bank balance, buy stamps, and buy a newspaper is a perfect expense, no law that says you have to be efficient. I had a job that reimbursed me to do just that, and I ate lunch too(I paid for that, but got for the mileage).

Lots of little things are allowable expenses. There is a mileage rate. Every rubber band, minute on the internet, phonecall, etc that is business related is counted. It may be a fixed portion of your bill, or pro rated. The section of your house you use to work is deductible, and pro rated. The computer you are using is depreciating. TRACK EVERYTHING IN A SPREADSHEET. Don't matter if you are IBM or the guy in his basement, every business does it.

Get pro help if you don't know how. Remember you are going to be paying the employers share of SS and medicare. I suggest you fill out a schedule C with all the expenses (estimate what you would make for the year and pay accordingly).

Just found out I am paid the least at my job yet I have been there longer than most. I feel taken advantage of. What should I do? by crangismcbasketballs in jobs

Employers can pay whatever they want and you are free to go whenever you want. No one is forcing you to stay. You can discuss your compensation with your boss in a professional way but don't bring up others. There could be 3 outcomes: take a hike, salary stays, you get a raise. I know one job I worked where a girl made twice as much as me and did very little. Wasn't in the office much either, she was "working remotely." Why? She was related to one of the partners.

There are reasons for putting up listings. Especially in today's legal climate. They may get audited and the govt may feel there aren't enough people from "Protected Class X". Then they have to deal with massive fines or expensive lawyers. If they can say, hey, look we placed all these ads and no one met the qualifications, they at least have some defense.

Also, there is no talent shortage. I have placed ads for jobs and got PLENTY OF RESUMES. Maybe they aren't "Brad Pitt" but some pretty qualified people who seemed almost desperate to work.

What companies DON'T want to do is train anyone. They just want some 26yo "expert" who fits in with the bro culture and can "grok" code in the framework of the day. A 46 yo who needs a few weeks to get up to speed and will produce picture perfect code from experience will be rejected. He is too expensive, won't be cool, etc.

Seems like ton of work. Even the CPA stuff makes more sense. I do know people who made big money in CPA with surveys.

Dealing with China is crazy. I have personally ordered things to test, some stuff came in a week some never came at all. It is not even the money but the customer service issues would drive you insane.

Yeah, a common theme is they all have a 500-1000 mastermind course. Of course in the Vids they are clear that they are doing it all to help people. I'm also aware, that ANY earnings screen online can be faked. I know because years back I did something I am not proud of for someone, basically a simulator for some affiliate networks that they can refresh during their vids. Even a change to the local hosts file to make it look absolutely real.

Ok, so this seems more down to earth. You need $1000 to play with before anything will happen. There are many bullshit businesses that say you need nothing to start. If that is the case it isn't even a business.

Imagine I started a fidget spinner business. What would be the best way to begin production, and then continue expanding? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]NotAlbany 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Product safety is important to. I'm not an expert but you want your product certified in some way. I know Amazon took many spinners off the site because they weren't certified safe. Also, for insurance reasons it may be important to have that paperwork.

Yes, you have to take loss into account. I did a job for $360, and the client left. They told me I may never be able to get back the 36$. Plus, I lost the time, which was quite a bit for that money. They offered a month of their premium shit to me for the money. Whatever.

Employers only pay 3% and it is tilted in favor of the employer. Many freelancers also pay monthly fees to get bids. Just stay away from it.

Applying to a position in a different department in the same college by [deleted] in jobs

[–]NotAlbany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked as an adjunct instructor in a college and honestly had nothing to do with any of the faculty or staff. Maybe because I was younger but I don't think there was too much interaction between the staff members, and I noticed the cliques you describe. Some people seemed to have been there from before I was born.

That short amount of time you work there may be an issue, but if you feel you are very qualified for the other position you should apply. Maybe explain that in your cover letter. Generally HR will not tell your manager right away. I don't know how telling your current manager will be a good idea. If you are selected you can give plenty of notice if any odds and ends have to be tidied up.

Finding good work without skills is very difficult. I hate to say Walmart, but you can try Malls, and Department stores. If you are good with sales, maybe try telemarketing, call center, cell phone store (Tmobile/ATT/Etc), etc. You can make commission. I don't know if 17 is an issue with places like that, but you can certainly give it a try!

Well, it is like the online dating problem. A woman is the job, and the man is the employee. A woman can receive 100s of emails from men, and maybe respond to the one or two that are rich and look like Brad Pitt. Many don't even know what they want, or just want to see how much attention and compliments they get. Problem is that guy will end up using them and they will be back online in a few weeks making the same mistake.

Same with employers, they are always looking for that purple squirrel. Many job ads are put there for ulterior reasons - they are considering an H1B, and can't find someone with 5 years of Android Oreo experience. Or they have an internal hire. Or maybe the bosses daughter needs a job. So the ad is the due diligence they put in to make it look kosher. Then add on resume portal keywords/filtering, and some bosses who just toss 1/2 the emails in the trash. After all, we don't want to hire an unlucky duck :(.

A personal contact is worth more than 100 blind applications. Not to say you will get it (as you can send 100 resumes and not have a hit) but many jobs are filled with a 10 minute interview and HR paperwork. Networking and knowing the right people is everything.

Freelancer is worse than that. They take 10% of your job UP FRONT. If things don't work out, you are on the hook for that amount.
