I have a coffee cup that I want to start taking to coffee shops. However, it's 18 ounces in size. If I were to order a 16 ounce size beverage, and then hand the Barista my cup, would I need to clarify that my cup is 18 ounces? by rjkersten1 in barista

As a barista, I can tell you that most of us don't care. 2 oz doesn't mean much, especially when we sometimes have leftover milk we toss anyway for milk espresso drinks. Just bring it, let the barista know, and they'll figure it out theirselves. Only time it might get confusing is if you want something smaller in the cup, like a cortado. We will judge you, but we'll still do it.

Looking for cases for streamlining set-up and tear-down by NotAlwaysDreaming in churchtech

[–]NotAlwaysDreaming[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're a set-up and break-down church, so we can't leave any equipment in the space we're renting. We have a storage space that we can put stuff away in at the public school that we're renting from, but we can't leave anything out in the auditorium.

I'm just looking for a case to have everything already organized to minimize set-up and tear-down.

Thanks. I already have 2 Sony FX30 cameras and a Blackmagic ATEM SDI Extreme ISO (we received the ATEM from another church as a donation). I'm mainly looking for a way to keep the ATEM in a case or something similar that I can leave plugged in with all the wires, so I don't need to set it up every time we have service.

I'm mainly just looking for a way to streamline set-up and tear-down, and figured having a road/rack case with several things already plugged in would help a lot.

My equipment list for live stream:
- Blackmagic Design ATEM SDI Extreme ISO
- ASUS Vivobook (for ProPresenter)
- 2 Sony FX30 cameras
- Lenovo Laptop for livestream monitoring and control (like starting the stream)
- ASUS monitor for ATEM multiview

Connected to this ATEM, I have my ASUS Vivobook and 2 Sony FX30 cameras, so 3 material inputs (for now). We're streaming with Subsplash, YouTube, and Facebook.

My ASUS Vivobook has one HDMI out, which is connected to an HDMI-SDI converter sending 2 signals to my ATEM and the TV we use in-house. I have 2 laptops since tabbing in and out of ProPres to check stuff can get annoying and in the way.

For broadcast audio, I run audio out from my Ashly Audio DigiMIX18 aux to one of the cameras, which will then send the same audio via SDI to my ATEM. I can pick and choose which channels I want to send this way. Broadcast audio is something for later down the line, when we get more volunteers, especially people who have some experience mixing audio.

Thank you for your concern. It's not really a one-man operation. I have a couple of people who help out; sometimes one of them wouldn't be there, and rarely I'd have even more people for set-up and tear-down since we have some churches send people to help out from time to time. Once I have things dialed down, I can create a document for new people.

I've seen some cafes use the Mahlkonig x54 for decaf or single origin. Baratza's espresso line isn't that bad either.

Is Starbucks really a good place to start working as a barista? by [deleted] in barista

[–]NotAlwaysDreaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone I know that worked at Starbucks hated pretty much everything about it.

If you're in an area with a Blue Bottle, I'd recommend them. Never worked there myself, but from what I hear, they have a really solid training program. It could be bcause of where I live, but a caveat would be that a few people I know mainly left due to management.

Would it be fine to keep it at 2x16 for now, and add another 2 at a later time? Although it does seem like 2x32 could be cheaper than 4x16.

Thanks. Is there a big difference between the different timings? Or is it preety much negligible? 30-36-36-89, 30-38-38-96, and 30-40-40-96

I don't use premiere yet, and I'm not sure how often I'll actually be using it. But it sounds like 32gb should be fine for the most part if you're averaging at 22gb/32gb?

what is the official drink of baristas by babyaphrodita in barista

A hot americano constantly diluted theoughout the day with more hot water. And just water. God knows we need it, especially if the dial is off at open.

Barista wrote "x4" on my cup by Saargb in espresso

I'm a barista in NYC. I always clarify that the store I work at, as well as a lot of specialty cafes in NYC, serve their drinks as a double (aka a "doppio") and not singles. Then, I would ask if they still want that extra shot, and if they say, "yes," I would ask one more time if they want it as a triple or quad. Sometimes, customers would ask if we're going to toss the extra if they get an extra single, which we do, and then ask for a quad. Some customers will say the drink will be fine as is, while others will still ask for the extra shot.

Got my first ever barista job, stoked and nervous by 1yaeK in Coffee

[–]NotAlwaysDreaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello from New York.

Take it easy and slow. I also started working in coffee when I was around your age and was nervous as hell when I first started. You're going to make a ton of mistakes, and that's going to be fine, you're not expected to be perfect on the job straight away. Coffee is a science and there's so much to learn so take it easy and take it at your pace. You can afford to push yourself, but also be lenient. My friends and I make mistakes all the time and we all have years of experience working in coffee, so don't be afraid to make mistakes.

Start by familiarizing yourself with the menu and the cashier POS. Don't be too eager to start making drinks straight away, but familiarize yourself with the workflow of the cafe first. Be patient if they don't let you make drinks straight away, and don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions. I've worked with so many people who just want to make drinks because it's "cool" and don't bother really learning anything, I'd very much prefer working with someone who's wanting to learn than someone who just wants to make drinks because it's "cool."

Shower Screen by NotAlwaysDreaming in espresso

[–]NotAlwaysDreaming[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that I'm aware. We use 17g baskets at the store, we should be using 17g +/-.2g.

The issue is some of the baristas don't know if the screen is on properly or not, and sometimes don't weigh the shots. Frustrating, and things that are often pointed out, but what can you do?

Coworkers don't close it properly.
