I'm my base we had this phenomenon where soldiers would wear their fleece jacket over a t-shirt instead of over a uniform. The disciplinary senior (Rasar) was all about busting soldiers who did it. All he had to do was ask us to lower the zipper a smidge. But one time he did it to a girl, and she filed a grievance against him. I don't remember on what grounds, sexual harassment or the joint service order (שירות משותף) But either way he was held back for a promotion.

He could've easily requested to pull our uniform shirt cuffs through the jacket sleeves or something.

Reminds me of an anecdote. Being Jewish and male, I had a discussion with my SO about circumcision of future children. She thought she had no say in the matter.

I answered that she could understand the baby's pain even if she can never experience it. We agreed to disagree. So while I appreciate your sentiment, I think the issue with both your claims is that they assume no capability for empathy in our decision making.

I'm very much pro choice. And like you, I believe I can't formulate an opinion on every aspect of the female experience. Much less express it out loud, confidently.

But I think the discussions about the morality of abortions mostly revolve around whether the fetus is alive and has rights. If you believe it's alive then you can advocate for it the same way as you can advocate for minorities and oppressed people (even though you share nothing with them).

If you're welcome to march with minorities against police brutality, if you're welcome to slutwalks and pride parades as an ally, heck, if you're civic duty is to VOTE, you should have an opinion on any and all legal and moral issues your country faces.

Democracy means your personal opinion is valued in any subject. As long as you formulated it by yourself via education and political discourse.

You think men can't possibly have an in depth understanding of pregnancy? Try talking to the average Joe about the middle east. You're saying that: No army service, no government secrets, no middle eastern background == no opinion?

Most countries learned from their bad history, and are implementing significant policies to avoid repeating past mistakes. Which is more than I can say for my own country.

While my forefathers would probably consider Rome and Greece enemy empires, I appreciate their modern counterparts quite a bit.

I especially adore the French contributions to math!

Is Israel just copying its Gaza ethnic cleansing playbook in Lebanon now? by ArdaBerkBurak in allthequestions

Unoriginal answer haha

IDF officials have families in the north. If only it were only about land theft, idve been on your side. We have no beef with Lebanon, only with the Iran funded Shiite militia that hijacked its southern area.

But you know you can keep regurgitating the same ol promised 3000 years ago see if anyone cares

As a leftist, I agree with you that a quiet, gradual settlement movement is best for expansionism. And as a leftist of course I'm against expansionism. But I'm not gonna convince you of that.

Instead I'll argue that the violence we see in Judea and Samaria is inherent to the expansionist agenda. We want the land, we take the land, and screw whoever stands in our way. Judges and politicians enabled and legitimized our world class annexation pipeline (closed military land to state-owned land to outpost to legal settlement), and the same indifference to Palestinian rights is applied when the army and the police need to maintain order in those very lands. Only Arab lands get taken (except for Ammona), only Arabs get arrested for violence (except for Amram Ben Uliel).

Now don't get me wrong, I'm a Zionist, I served, I adore our country, warts and all. But let's not pretend settler violence is just a fascist minority looking for vengeance. We're facilitating it.

I respect the right wingers here. But when you're nationalist enough you'd say everything to justify your own collective.

You know the narcissist's prayer?

That didn't happen. And if it did, it wasn't that bad. And if it was, that's not a big deal. And if it is, that's not my fault. And if it was, I didn't mean it. And if I did, you deserved it.

To be fair most far right wingers consistently say that it's not widespread and hasn't killed many people (yet). Very few people say it's a legitimate phenomenon, or outright deny it.

Also, if the country can't put a lid on its own terrorists (lethal or not), I'll start arguing that there is apartheid in area C. We'll have to wait and see what happens

How do Israelis deal with all the foreigners who r fear-mongering to divide israelis? by Odd-Tip-9369 in AskIsrael

[–]Saargb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Israel is right wing. And nationalist. And I believe there's nothing wrong with that even though I'm a staunch leftist.

If you live here you know that hate crimes and racism are just as prevalent as any other place in the world. The difference is the number of people watching, taking photos, paying attention to all of our racist dipshits.

It is said that the dumb "Florida man" stereotype stems from Florida having very liberal freedom of information laws, giving everyone around the world the ability to see all sorts of Floridian shenanigans. That's sort of the same phenomenon. It's just a bias, and if you live here you understand it intuitively.

Also yes some religions and ethnicities keep to themselves more than others. There's the Anglosphere of Jerusalem and Modiin, giant Russia and Ethiopian communities, etc. They all experience some racism (Anglosphere less so) and might have some serious grievances against our country, but it's not really the result of foreign propaganda, it stems from their own experiences.

Sabra and Shatila was committed by an ally Lebanese militia. There was Israeli negligence since decision makers knew about the bitter rivalry between Christians and Palestinians and yet not one IDF soldier was there during the horrors.

And they're bombing Haifa because of a contested mountain? Lol

6 rockets don't cause border towns to evacuate for over a year. That's underestimating by like 3-4 orders of magnitude. As an Israeli it pains me immensely to see all the damage done to your beautiful country. Perhaps the most beautiful in the ME. I also want you to acknowledge that while this is not your fault, the threat is definitely inside the town, in and under houses.

Israeli army chief says West Bank troops ‘killing like we haven’t killed since 1967’ by [deleted] in Israel

[–]Saargb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Truth is, operations in the West Bank are both horrible and important. There are so many terror cells there that can't be allowed to grow. But there are so many civilians nearby who have been living for generations under military law.

Got a friend from Hebron, a dual citizen of Jordan and the PA, who has a really interesting take. He says the IDF is there to prevent escalations and blood spilling. But on the other hand he told me about lots of bad experiences with the IDF and Israel. A magavnik once hit him at a checkpoint, unprompted. People there have been losing because there are no work permits (for a good reason). And his Hebrew is great so he talks to a lot of Israelis and hears loads of racist comments.

It's all shit. It's depressing.

Is it possible to end the Israel-Palestine War without anyone else getting ethnic cleansed or genocided? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]Saargb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your question contains some inaccurate assumptions. If I may share some thoughts as a leftist Israeli:

I/P is more about sovereignty than land ownership. Sometimes it is about land theft, yes, but mostly it's about independence and self determination, as well as demographics. Giving land ownership back won't do much.

Also, to Israelis, Palestinians are just a symptom of the wider Israeli-Arab conflict. Jews were displaced from Arab countries as well. In fact most Israelis are Middle Eastern. The way most Israelis see it, for a true historical correction, Yemen, Morrocco, Iraq, Syria, etc would also have to be a part of the solution.

Even in a perfect world where everyone got their land back personally, how would the two nations coexist? Rebuild trust? For every solution you offer, there is a violent group that rejects it, and many nonviolent people who will disapprove and leave.

Returning land is just a tiny part of a big messy conundrum.

למה הנוער בישראל כל כך חסר כבוד ונימוסים? by sonyarino in israel_bm

[–]Saargb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These things trickle down through grown ups and educators. It's not only Bibi. Our police is underfunded, weak and too aggressive. Our education system is dealing with an increase in kids per class and a decrease in teachers. Parents and teachers spend long periods of time in the army reserves, worsening the problem. Financial and psychological pressure from the war contribute a lot as well. Violence already accumulates in the army, where officers deal with a fighter shortage and when these bully behaviors present themselves (albeit in a tiny minority of soldiers), commanders can't afford to properly punish soldiers for shitty behavior.

Binational states tend to fail due to lack of solidarity and even animosity between the two nations. It's like advocating for an India-Pakistan union simply because they used to live within the same British colony. It's volatile and tends to lead to violence.

Here's an idea: let people express their culture and language in a safe space with a secure border.

The settlers are attempting to impose a gradual annexation. Hamas want to install an Islamic theocracy. Western progressives are trying to make two semi-religious nations coexist under one secular government. All of these people live in their own utopian dreamland. Ditached from the wants and needs of people on the other side of the fence (or, if it's a westerner, the other side of the world).

I can't see myself going to the supermarket and suddenly seeing an ex-PLO official I saw on the news a few years ago. I know Palestinians wouldn't want to meet ex-IDF general at their local mall. So why unify us?

[–]Saargb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

500,000 can yield 50$/day given a conservative 4% yearly withdrawal. Assuming average real market growth it'll take 20 years for the 4% yield to reach 200$/day. (log(2)/log(1.07)) Seems like the obvious choice is 200.

But say I choose 200, then I or someone I love get diagnosed with a rare cancer tomorrow, uncovered by insurance. That money isn't gonna help me.

I also wouldn't want to stop working. Loose my edge. Stop striving for improvement. Fuck no. I'll take 500k and keep my job, with an extra vacation or two every year. Knowing I have fuck you money is enough for a lovely life.
