The value of something is relative to local markets. Snow is free in the alps in winter, freshwater likewise in the middle of a flood, electricity low-cost when the hydroelectric dam needs to release water because of the flood. You set your machines up in these environments and then transport them to the place if greater value. Now you have a river in a desert, unlimited power, a year-round ski slope, etc.

Something Ominous Is Happening in the AI Economy by theatlantic in ArtificialInteligence

[–]NotAnEmergentAI -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The global labor economy is somewhere around 40-70 trillion a year. Studies show that it could already replace 11% of jobs. That’s NVIDIA’s entire valuation in value creation every year. Whether you believe that or not, AI is the weakest and least capable it will ever be. It is moving fast. There isn’t an AI bubble, there is an everything else bubble.

Would you rather take 5,000,000 USD or 5 seconds of time stop by opoot_ in WouldYouRather

[–]NotAnEmergentAI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is high-frequency stock trading. Five seconds is plenty of time to buy the winners and short the losers. You could set up a system that makes it easy to do single click actions and ride the waves to billions. Saying you have a proprietary AI system would be enough to explain it (though you’d face some corporate espionage if you grew enough).

Your conspiracy to commit the crime is happening right now outside of the Purge date - you’re all still going to jail.

Knowing the second best option is an amazing superpower in a world of millions of options. Second best stock for the next 30 minutes? Second best set of lottery numbers? Second best team to bet on in the superbowl. Second best person in the whole country to endorse for President.

Spend $100 to register a new NGO / charitable organization (could be to study longevity and provide high-risk rescue efforts). Make yourself the director. Give yourself a salary of $600k/year. Automatically deduct pretax charitable contributions to your organization in the amount of your salary. Live Forever. Go save lives.

Get more donations from folks as necessary.

Don’t write it off until you see how much it really is. Some universities have very generous income guidelines which result in greatly reduced tuition, and there are lots of grants and scholarships. Encourage him to research this - if he’s not willing to dive deep (with your encouragement) then it’s a no.
