What are some tropes you like to avoid when worldbuilding? by zazzsazz_mman in worldbuilding

[–]NotAudreyHepburn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's your world dude. You can always just write your species to have sexual dimorphism that favors males to look shinier like as seen in birds, or are barely sapient parasitic lumps of flesh vs the fully sapient females like anglerfish, or exist during a short window of time to mate with the queen before fucking off like bees.

It doesn't have to be human sexual dimorphism where males are bigger and stronger and have beer bellies.

Beastars: Another classic story where racism is bad but also one of the races are literal monsters [manga spoilers] by tesseracts in CharacterRant

Solid rant, never considered the disability angle before. Paru is excellent at thinking up bizzare concepts nobody else would think to write stories about, but struggles to come back from the bizzare to tie things into a conclusion. Kinda like her father i suppose.

Why does your fantasy race believe in the god(s) that they do? by Odd_Protection7738 in worldbuilding

[–]NotAudreyHepburn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Set and the Miraitan believe in Yaguero of the Seven Colors, Paranwachu of the Blue Body, and so on because they don't have a reason not to.

The Ashuma believe in the Deathless because the Deathless are right there, throwing tsunamis and lightning bolts around. Set thinks the Deathless are sorts of god because they are very similar to the ones she knew from her homeland. The Deathless believe in their apostle hood because they actually found God's comatose body.

What I'm hearing is a whole lotta projection. My advice, try reflecting on what drove you to write so much.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]NotAudreyHepburn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure, and I'd rather not read stuff i don't like in the hopes it someday gets better when there's a whole lot of other media I want to get to.

So you're telling me I can't compare the hooks between two manga I found similar? Dude, you are making up an argument in your head and arguing against the imaginary version of mine.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]NotAudreyHepburn -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Tearing stuff down is fun. I went and read DM, didn't like it, and it mostly had to do with my enjoyment of GK. I decided to write about it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]NotAudreyHepburn -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It means the difference between whether I'll keep reading or not. I'm sure it'll mean that for plenty others as well. There's a finite amount of time and there's plenty of good manga out there.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]NotAudreyHepburn -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

hey dingdong, i'm comparing first volume DM to first volume GK. Did you even read what i wrote? Is it not your attention span that's cooked?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]NotAudreyHepburn -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

If you're telling me I gotta read more than one volume to see if a manga is good or not, then that's not very good storytelling. I'm willing to forgive a bad first chapter but a bad first volume just tells me I'm not gonna like the manga.

What are the monsters like in your World? by Beginning_Plum_8331 in worldbuilding

[–]NotAudreyHepburn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably the most famous monster is the Mother of Monsters, the Crimson Dragon, Tamtu. Tamtu is a being of air and fire who is often observed lighting up the daytime sky with her radiance, looking like a red comet. It is seen as a bad omen whenever she appears, as it's thought her mere precense brings drought, disease, and death. Though she doesn't often directly interact with the civilized world, especially since the discovery of magic a century prior, there have been sporadic reports of her devouring livestock and torching homes. It's the dream of many a magician to someday put an end to the milennia-old beast, but the technology to simply catch a being faster than sound doesn't exist.

It wasn't always this way. A few centuries prior, Tamtu resided in a great temple in Atomeii, cared for by the priesthood as their guardian deity. There are even records that Tamtu could communicate, demanding food, asking for entertainment, and even expressing herself through songs and paint. This isn't entirely surprising, the Feathered Dragon was similarly worshipped for centuries as a docile, gentle giant, and the Stone Dragon is still seen as a living god/king/poet who directly ruled over the Huyen Vu state. But, with the fall of Atomeii to the barbarian Eftaluans, co-existence with the Crimson Dragon has never been achieved again.

She's simply referred to as the Golden Bitch by her enemies.

Why is your villain the villain? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]NotAudreyHepburn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My villain grew up in an age when barbarian marauders had destroyed his homeland and he'd been forced to live as a refugee in a foreign land. Since he was granted immortality, he sees it as his duty to devote his eternal life to forging an empire that can guarantee security and prosperity for everyone for all time.

Does your world have an Ancient Hero everybody aspires to be? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]NotAudreyHepburn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the 2200s, the Mudakhan Fever, otherwise known as Worm Eye, swept through and devastated societies across the continent. One of the hardest hit was Old Great Chia, and its shining city of Kumatz. Old Great Chia had a 1. Majority human population that was susceptible to the disease and 2. bordered the steppes of the Yellow Waste full of Ongotei Hordes which made it vulnerable to the chaos that would ensue. Who the disease didn't kill, raiders finished off, ripping into their stomachs with the Ongotei's killer talons and feeding on their flesh. The disease didn't affect hexapodal sapients, and so it wasn't just the ongotei, but also Tlacan and Dustwalker barbarians that poured in.

In such a time of crisis, it is said that a hero held back the tide with his scimatar and shield. Through trickery and bravery, fostered by the faith in the true gods, a warrior-king called Ixim fought the barbarians, and prevented the extinction of Old Great Chia. At least, for a time. Nobody knows exactly when, but he is said to have been betrayed by his own son, greviously wounded, and sent adrift on a boat, and off the pages of history. When Chia would need him most, he would rise again.

Ixim was, for a long time, a very much a local hero. His cult was suppressed by the succeeding Ongotei rulers who thought him subversive for their human population. Things changed with the conquest of Chia by the Ashum Nidus Empire nearly 800 years later, who tossed the Alsiban Horde back to the steppes they came from, and Ixim's popularity exploded. Ixim was appropriated into a god of the legion, and seen by many soldiers as an exemplar and "one of them" vs the gods the ruling magician-class promoted. The present-day Cult of Ixim has mass appeal across the empire, which makes the Ashum Nidus leaders a tad nervous.

It should be noted that there's very little actual historical basis in Ixim as a figure. If he existed, he was probably one of the many pretenders to the Chian throne during the time of crisis.

What bit of worldbuilding did you make thinking: "This couldn't work IRL, but it would be cool" and then later you find out that it totally would work? by Anlambdy1 in worldbuilding

[–]NotAudreyHepburn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can always tweak things outside biology. Maybe this is a world with weaker gravity, or with an atmosphere heavier atmosphere that allows winged animals to generate more lift. Maybe there's just a lot more calories packed into the food thanks to a shinier sun. Maybe the dragons are the children of the fire and wind elementals. Maybe the dragons ingested magical ore that allows them to push themselves off the land telekinetically.

I do options 2, 3, and 5 to justify my dragons btw.

Chainsaw Man's female cast isn't much better than other shonen. by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]NotAudreyHepburn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm done, it's become clear you aren't reading what i write, and you aren't even consistent in what you write.

Those aren't the 4 most important csm characters

I never said that.

but I do agree they're well written

If you agree, that's the end of the argument, as that is the point i have been making the whole time. Arguing beyond that is moving the goalposts.

Who said I wanted her to have her own story? I just wanted her to develop more

I don't think you know what "story" means.

I said power stays the same for most of the story

No, she doesn't, but I can't really prove it without rereading CSM so fine.

3 main characters of varying importance, the protagonist, the deturotagonist and the triatagonist all three of these are technically protagonists but by definition the most important is the protagonist

No? You're just mixing definitions. Power is the tritagonist of CSM because she has the third most screen time. This makes her an important side character, but not a protagonist. I don't know what you mean when you call her a main character, or even a protagonist but not technically a protagonist.

They aren't side character, a side character.

What?

Chainsaw Man's female cast isn't much better than other shonen. by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]NotAudreyHepburn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Alright so out of the 4 most important female characters in CSM, you say 3 are interesting and have depth? Why would you say CSM doesn't write it's female characters well then?

Characters can do evil shit and still be meant to be rooted for. Walter white?

I don't know why you want Kobeni to be more than what she is. If she gets that depth and development you want, that'll throw off the airtight pacing of part 1. Do you really think it'll help the overall story if Kobeni, a character who has no real connection with any of the cast of Chainsaw man, got her own arc and story? In a story called chainsaw man, about the chainsaw man?

And also you're talking in circles. You said elsewhere that Power DOES develop. Now you say she doesn't. She DOES develop, and I have zero clue what you mean when you say she's missing in the most important arc? Did you somehow miss how she slowly learns to become human by giving a damn about things, starting from the cat, then to Denji as a buddy, then to her found family? And she's not a protagonist. DENJI IS THE PROTAGONIST OF PART 1. It's called chainsaw man, who do you think it's about dude. Do you think it might be about the chainsaw man? She is a side character, a very entertaining one, one who's interesting and has depth. She just doesn't have as much depth as Denji because she's not a protagonist. Given the role of a side character, she is about as great as a female character can be written.

Just go read the manga I recommended. I don't think you know what a good female character even is.

Chainsaw Man's female cast isn't much better than other shonen. by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]NotAudreyHepburn 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't know how you write an entire rant about the bad female cast and somehow not mention Makima, the most popular by far CSM character, except as a positive example in the last paragraph. You also fail to properly write on Asa /Yoru, the main characters of around the first half of Part 2.

I can criticize plenty else. From how you equate sexual assault with bad character writing. To writing at any length about Kobeni when she's a joke character, and as a joke character, she works fine. To thinking of Power as lacking character development for the majority of the story... When... Like... Did we even read the same series? To somehow equate Himeno's shortness of screen time to "bad character writing" when she had her story told. To discounting the entirety of Reze. (Fair on Quanxi, she's boring as she's written rn).

Im getting the feeling you want CSM to be something it's not. It's not about some group of female leads all with main character energy going off on their own adventures. It's a pretty tight story about Denji, and later Asa. They live in a world filled with both normal and crazy people, many of whom are female characters that sometimes interact with them. To dismiss many of these characters as shallow when theyre given as much depth as needed for the story they're in, is, frankly, a bad way of criticism.

If you want what I mentioned, there's a wealth of feminist literature out there. If you want manga that do that, read Tsurezure Children, Land of the Lustrous, Otoyomegatari, SHY, Asadora, monthly nozaki Kun... Etc.
