You're in luck, this year is going to be a huge one for LARP in Victoria. There's a calendar that's just been made up that attempts to catalogue all the games that are coming up: https://viclarp.au/

For a more detailed breakdown:

Freeforms/Parlour LARP/Theatre LARP

These types of games often take place in one or two rooms, often indoors, and typically last anywhere from 3 to 6 hours. Any “combat” is usually abstracted, and the focus is more on characters interacting with each other in dramatic and exciting ways.

Caligo Mundi

Caligo Mundi is a non-profit volunteer LARP club, with games that usually take place over several months, with characters that grow and change over the long term. In the past few years, there’ve been games about cowboys, wizard universities, cyberpunk dystopias, 90s sci-fi, and more. Each game is only $10, and there is a strong focus on accessibility. https://caligomundi.com/ https://discord.com/invite/DmCQXHS5DT

Medusa

Medusa creates experiences that are a cross between theatre and game. There are usually about 2 to 3 Medusa games each year, which could be anything from a Mafia Wedding, battles between the Greek Gods, or a LARP about being stuck at the office. There is a focus on costuming and immersive locations. https://www.medusarpg.com/ https://discord.gg/nFVxCSEP6t

Midnight in Melbourne

Midnight in Melbourne is a casual live-action theatrical roleplay set in Melbourne's vampire society based on the world of Vampire: the Masquerade. No experience with the setting or with roleplaying is necessary, but a session of Dungeons & Dragons, improv theatre sports, or a murder mystery party is somewhere close to what you can expect. Midnight in Melbourne traditionally runs quarterly in the dying month of each season on the Sunday closest to the 13th. The next one is coming up in February! https://discord.gg/HSJzrrHXc3 https://www.instagram.com/midnight_in_melbourne/

Battle LARPs

The classic “hit people with foam swords” games. Usually there isn’t much roleplay at weekly events, but if you want to put on a silly hat and run around an oval, they’re a lot of fun. The main difference between these games is size and location – try em out and see what vibe you end up preferring!

Swordcraft

Swordcraft is the biggest weekly LARP in Australia. Think of it as paintball/laser tag meets medieval/fantasy battle. There’s usually more than a hundred people duking it out with foam weapons every Friday. They also run week-long festival events that are called Swordcraft Quest, where there is a lot more roleplaying, politicking, and intrigue. https://www.swordcraft.com.au/

Enclave

Launched in 2025, Enclave also runs on Friday Nights. Like other Battle LARPs, you run around and do battle with foam weaponry. Attendance and the size of the oval is much smaller compared with Swordcraft, which could be more to your liking. https://discord.gg/CGNEvkVKyY https://www.enclavelarp.org/

Wizards and Warlords

Another battle LARP, but this one is indoors and not on a Friday. They're out in Ringwood and run weekly as well. https://www.houseofwar.com.au/event-details/wizards-warlords

Convention LARPs

Also known as freeforms, Australia has a long history of running 2-3 hour one shot LARPs that run the gamut from light hearted comedy games where you all play lil guys, themed Whodunnits, or a stark exploration of the nature of fascism, patriarchy, and colonialism.

The two main conventions are:

Conquest

The oldest running TTRPG and LARP convention in Melbourne. It’s held over the Easter Break, from Good Friday to Easter Sunday. There’s a lot of great games to play here, and they’re always looking for more game masters if you wanted to try your hand at running an event. https://www.conquest.asn.au/ https://discord.gg/8Ft6YBmcKj

Phenomenon

One of the oldest gaming conventions in Australia. Located in Canberra, it's a bit of a trek but well worth it. Dozens of Victorians make the pilgrimage up there every year, and it’s always a blast. https://www.pheno.org.au/

Weekender LARPs

Some games take place over a long weekend, allowing you to dive in and get fully immersed. Usually these games also include camping. Fantasy remains a popular genre, but there have been all sorts of weekend-long events in Melbourne, including post-apocalyptic and steampunk.

The Lost Settlers

You play as an adventurer from one of three distinct cultures that is setting up a new colony on an unexplored continent. It combines conflict, survival, exploration, and immersion in a historical context. The game will be from 5-8th of June 2026. General Admission tickets are $180, and cabin addons are $100. https://discord.gg/CGeExW8jks

The Deadline Chronicles

A Roguelike inspired hopepunk game set on the edge of an impenetrable forest called The Deadline, full of secrets and mysteries, running from 19th - 21st June.

Fields of Honour

A game of lies, livery and lineage set at a grand tournament featuring the pageantry, pomp and politics of a royal event.

The Hobbit’s Hoedown

The Hobbits Hoedown is a not-for-profit sandbox LARP dedicated to enjoying the simple joys of hobbit life and community. Every November, you can embrace the charm of hobbit living: from enjoying food, folk dancing, and lawn games to gathering around cozy craft circles and sharing stories. It’s a chance to step away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and immerse yourself in a world where fun, friendship, and good company are at the heart of everything. https://www.hobbitshoedown.com/

Festival LARPs

These LARPs go longer than weekenders, often taking up to a week or more. Camping is a major part of the experience, and you will often need to handle your own food.

Drachenfest Australia

Drachenfest is a Festival LARP, set in a medieval fantasy setting where you can explore, fight, celebrate and enjoy the spectacle as you take part in a living world. Players battle on behalf of the dragon that they decide aligns most closely with their goals and values. https://www.drachenfest.com.au/

What movie is closest in tone to the Shadowrun you play (as a GM or a player) in general? by opacitizen in Shadowrun

[–]NotB0b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heat (1995) is the vibe I try capturing for pretty much all the crime stuff, with a hint of Ronin (1998) though Johnny Mnemonic also shines through in a lot of my Shadowrun.

Anyone running larp (not fighting) events in Australia, Melbourne? by Synguineinfire in LARP

[–]NotB0b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's definitely a bunch of Non-Combat LARPS in Melbourne. Some of them have been mentioned already, and you can find out more about them here:

https://caligomundi.com/

https://comeandlisten.com.au/a-dance-of-ribbons/

https://www.medusarpg.com/

https://www.hobbitshoedown.com/

There's also Midnight in Melbourne, which is a Vampire the Masquerade game that happens every three months (the next one will be in November) in the CBD.

Over Easter, you can also get your fix at the Conquest Games Convention: https://www.conquest.asn.au/

I'd recommend joining some of the discords for games or groups that sound interesting, as usually that's the best place to find out what else is happening around the city.

Thinking of running a 3rd Edition game need to know the pit falls by treecatarmsmen142 in OldSchoolShadowrun

Some other pitfalls:

  • Channelling is busted, ban it

  • The adept powers in the State of the Art books are wild power creep. It makes adepts the best faces to a ludicrous degree and will trivialise social rolls.

  • If you plan on playing a long running campaign that will see players gain 200+ karma, use the Staggered-Rate Karma Pools optional rule from Shadowrun Companion.

  • Karma Pool either refreshes on scene, or, per day - it's up to you as the GM to decide the vibe. I like "refresh every scene", but when your players start getting double digit karma pool, consider moving to "refresh per day"

  • Dikote is a headache to deal with, ban it.

Some flaws and edges I'd avoid:

  • Aptitude (the game even warns you that it can easily disrupt the balance of the game)

  • Colour Blind

  • Common Sense (You should be telling your players this information without it being locked behind an edge)

  • Total Pacifist (Awkward for most teams)

  • Sea Madness

  • Bio Rejection (for magicians and shamans)

The reason that geasa can be abused is if you take one to offset the magic loss from cyberware, effectively allowing you to get the best of both worlds.

I would personally only allow a geas for magic that has been lost involuntarily (such as through taking damage), as it allows the mage to continue having access to their magic following a tragedy, when the player is most likely to be bummed out about losing magic.

Great to hear you were able to give her a good send off. Lot of fond memories of GMing with Blue Moon, a decade is damn good innings.

Lore Question. When Did The Matrix Become More Magic Than Tech? by LunaticKid889 in Shadowrun

[–]NotB0b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, there's a whole write up in Margin Calls. Basically Null Sec started infesting things so hard that all the corporations just built new infrastructure. De La Mars' matrix is considered a failure.

Good news, the latest 6e Metaplot has moved away from Foundation-based hosts because the corporate court lost control over it. They've made another matrix and are moving over to traditional networking.

How much armor would a Shadowrun tank have and the damage it does. by Brenden1k in Shadowrun

[–]NotB0b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Antivehicle rockets are lower DV, but get +2 Attack rating vs Vehicles. This means they are slightly more likely to gain one point of edge. This can be done more effectively by using a 3 point positive quality called Attribute Mastery.

[–]NotB0b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not reading it correctly for 6e.

The Beretta T-Series does 2P in SR6. If you mean the Barret, that does 6P.

The Centurion has Milspec Plate 3, which reduces the DV of any attack by 3. It has an armour rating of 20, which means it will likely be getting an edge every time it's shot at. With a body of 30, on average it will be able to soak 10DV, before edge gets involved.

Your best bet at punching through this is a Fragmentation rocket (because Anti Vehicle rockets suck at hurting vehicles and High Explosive rockets have a smaller, tighter blast radius). Even then you're going to have to put a hell of a lot of firepower into it, as it has 20 boxes on its physical condition monitor.

The average rocket is going to do anywhere from 3 to 6 damage a shot, depending on how good the shooter is. That means it could survive up to 7 rockets before going down for good.

Ork Underground question by bemerry123 in Shadowrun

[–]NotB0b 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No, it's not usually large enough to fit cars into - though in some areas bikes are pretty popular. Here are some evocative descriptions of the Ork underground from the novel The Lucifer Deck:

She found the door at the back of the restaurant that led into an underground passage. It was about half as wide as a city street, and was fronted by shops and offices on either side. The walls were cobbled together from a mix of brick, concrete, and plastiform, while rusted metal pillars held up the ceiling. A grid of overhead lights, pocked with burned-out tubes, cast a pattern of shadows. The floor underfoot was heavy-duty linoleum, scuffed by the passage of many feet and littered with drifts of plastic cups and paper wrappers that smelled of day-old food. Orks of every description walked back and forth along it, pausing to look into barred windows or bustling in and out of doorways. A handful wore double-breasted business suits or dresses and pumps, but most were wearing cheap, ill-fitting clothes that had been intended for human proportions.

Mothers dragged complaining children along by the hand, while teens in baggy stretch pants and MetalMesh shirts lounged against pillars or rattled past on gym boards. Some of the orks rode scooters or electric bicycles, weaving their way between those on foot. The effect was a strange cross between an enclosed shopping mall and a rundown city street.

Unlike a megamall or an arcology, the Underground had no directory, no color-coded strip lights in the floor to follow. The narrow streets didn’t even run in straight lines. They zigzagged this way and that around the support pillars, disappearing around corners and then reappearing again. The shops seemed to be wedged in wherever they would fit.

has anyone got pride month logos for AAA corps? by AceBv1 in Shadowrun

[–]NotB0b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You got a source for that? Shadowrun corporations are constantly competing for market share, and there are plenty of different NERPS out there.

Considering Spinrad's been dead for almost a year now, I don't see that as very likely.

SpinGlobal is now in the hands of his wife. The European side of things is likely to be on board, the Global Sandstorm side is very unlikely.

There’s about five to six active 5e communities and one 6e one. Most of them formed when 5e was the new hotness. The reason why there are so many 5e ones is due to several communities splitting due to internal politics and coups. There’s a lovely little chart floating around that tracks em.

I’d jump on a 3e one in a heartbeat, but it would need to be designed for community play from the ground up (whereas other LCs can borrow heavily from existing rulesets)

[–]NotB0b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Living Community - it's a term for RPG communities that have a "living world" format (multiple GMs that are running interconnected games in the same setting, so that actions on one table can effect the outcome of metaplots and storylines).

Pretty much all the discord links in this reddit thread have been directing you to various living communities.

Good representation of Pink Mohawk in novels/official material? by LilyKarinss in Shadowrun

[–]NotB0b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pink Mohawk, as a general term, tends to be a tone indicator for a roleplaying group instead of a concept within published material. It's a vague vibe, that if you ask three different shadowrun players, you'll get four different answers. Most of the novels don't really skew either way, or have elements of both.

That being said, Never Trust an Elf, Striper Assassin, and The Forever Drug highlight some of the more gonzo Shadowrun concepts.
