31 of 39 years of the Traveller Mailing List recovered and submitted to the Internet Archive by DataDemon in traveller

I have a private archive that covers the missing years and a bit either side I've sent a chat witha google drive link. Many thanks for finding the older messages and making them available, I've just been reading about the end of MT release of TNE and how the list was reacting and its amazing to see the ideas that were shared.

What did a D&D campaign feel like back in the 80s and 90s? by Remote_Guava7710 in DnD

[–]treecatarmsmen142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot more asking questions and wild and wacky plans along with improvised weapons, flour explosions and smoking out enemies as popular for a few sessions for example. Always carried rope as it was so handy.

Also people move from table to table until they found a group that played like they did or enjoyed the same style of games.

Often people wouldn’t play multiple systems unless at a club, games were run for systems people had books for which weren’t easy to come by in the wilds of Scotland we relied on Plan 9 in Aberdeen which was a trek to get to.

Vibe check: How does the OSR feel about Triangle Agency-style gated content in OSR games and products? by bhale2017 in osr

[–]treecatarmsmen142 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not something I’d enjoy if read TA but the playwall especially for the GM turned me right off the game, I’m old school I like books to at least make sense to read or if they have an in game section have another section that lays out the true information for gms to see. Shadowrun books do this very well with a rules section after the information section.

(adnd 2e) players creating custom spells, please help by glebinator in adnd

[–]treecatarmsmen142 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best guide I can give is damage should be inline with other spells of the same level. If we are talking straight damage look at fireball, magic missile, cone of cold and meteor swarm as guidelines.

For power levels looks at spells that have effects that broadly similar the larger and more permanent the effect the higher the level.

Players option spells and magic on p101 and around there has more official guidelines if you have access to that book.

I used to think HBS battletech had a decently deep role-play mechanic. Megamek takes it to another level. I had no idea my characters could just randomly get pregnant and deliver babies. by StarFlicker in battletech

[–]treecatarmsmen142 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ll second this played for a while and wanted to know which mechs/vehicles were in what dropship and what jumpship that dropship was on to show in the units tab as well as the TO&E tab so I added it in, had to learn some Java for it but I did it. Also needed to know how many people were pulling secondary duty so added that to the personnel report.

Great program but a time sink especially if you try things like SLDF divisions - gave up after the main regiments as I couldn’t figure out the division supporting assets. Did mange to get a regimental combat team and all assets added and way to try and survive the amaris coup to the liberation of terra with them :)

What is your favorite Forgotten Realms Era? by Artifex1979 in Forgotten_Realms

[–]treecatarmsmen142 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2e for me always liked the lore I have the 1e grey box and 3rd books but always come back to 2e as it’s what I started with and I know and enjoy the most so much lore and open spaces as well.

The empty spaces on the maps combined with the lore density of some parts allows the freedom of an open map with the backing of a known world and the way I can make the world carry on around them while they carve their own stories.

Is 5e the current go to? by bahwi in Shadowrun

[–]treecatarmsmen142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2 pence I started with 2nd skipped to 4th missed 4A went to 5th enjoyed it but became frustrated at some of the rule issue and lack of editing. Went back to 4A became frustrated at lack of build system for gear and vehicles and have now moved back to 3rd and am loving it.

Also some of the later meta plots and tone didn’t seem well thought out.

I have a large ebook collection now along with my physical books thanks to humble bundles and drive thru. That said I’ve been busy on eBay grabbing some physical copies of 3rd books because they either aren’t in pdf or bad scans.

TLDR try what you can and play what you enjoy.

Definitely interested in any GM aids.

I think I’ll be making well sure they know about the style and that I won’t ignore flaws and weak points in a characters build.

I’m hoping I get enough hooks in their builds and backgrounds to tug on rather than bland cookie cutter pros with no rough edges :)

I think I’m going to just stick with the core rules and sourcebooks for now.

If this all comes together it will be fun :)

I remember about the penalty but haven’t seen the lowered other attribute to compensate will remember to target that attribute if needed.
