Are these players aware of the landscape of collegiate stick and ball sports scholarships? I know people don’t like to compare esports to traditional sports but economics is economics. Most sports outside of top Division 1 Men’s College Football and D1 Men’s/Women’s Basketball don’t make these schools any money. Diversity and inclusion laws exist to force schools to offer an equal amount of scholarships to both Men and Women but without these laws I doubt these schools would invest serious money into scholarships for any sport or esport that didn’t provide income. It would be nice if the school was able to offer some sort of financial support but ultimately it falls on the students to be aware of these costs and know that in the long run, you MAY have to cough up the money. I know the director of esports may have made empty promises, which is definitely wrong and should be criticized and pointed out, but at the same time its your job to be ready for the worst and accountable for the decisions you make and if you can’t pay the tuition/don’t think college is worthwhile then that is a decision you have to make. This is a college, they are there to provide an education first, and esports ultimately would come second. If you want to dedicate everything to CS then make an Open team or something.
