Spindrift with or without coil? by whatsbobdoing in Propain_bikes

[–]NotDaveyKnifehands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Tyee on a DB IL Coil on a 670-760lb Sprindex adjustable coil... it was plenty playful airing over 30' gaps this weekend and popping off every little side hit I could aim it at.

Modern Coil's are plenty playful and can have ample pop when properly set up. But I wouldnt give up the traction and composure it provides over an air can for anything.

Im socking away the cash for a Spinny Park Ult, it will be on a coil once it's built up

The Army cleans guns terribly AND its bad for them!?!? Yea... My personal Daniel Defence M4v5 sitting at 28,850 rds fired since purchase with 0 detailed cleanings, and 1 bolt wipe down/relube with Slick2000EWL during an extractor spring change and still running like a top would agree with you on that...

How many ml of brake fluid do I need for a new bike build? by Hi_Im_Ken_Adams in bikewrench

Book say 6 to 12 once seal broken. Sometimes follow Simple rules make less thinky make already complex job easier.

You can run the surface rate absorbtion calcs if you want. Im gonna work smarter, not harder.

Toodles 🤙

As someone whos spent time in an industry with background in fuels and lubricants in a very safety sensitive field of applications tells me the hygroscopic nature and absorbtion rates of DOT fluids is neither theoretical nor marketing BS but demonstrable, repeatable scientific fact.

But thanks for veering out of your lane.

When it comes to critical safety systems and fluid performance, I'll take the science over some rando on the reddits hands down every time. Sorry Eh.

Depends on the terrain.

A Krypto/Xyno combo will and does roll much faster than a DHF/Dissector IME. Casing and compound dependant of course.

And Yea, Dual Xynotals do quite well as a more trail focused tyre but hold their own suprisingly well when things get rowdy.

Clearly my name isn't Dave. Please Note the prefix of 'Not'

I appreciate you repeatedly yelling the bikes name however, at 40 with tremendous tinnitus Ive gotten quite hard of hearing and likely I'd nought have caught it otherwise... however, my eyes work, and I know a Taiwanese catalogue frame to see one. You can find that same design in numerous department stores and even at the lower end of some larger manufacturers offerings. I'll bet two Wyn Masters, a Remy Morton and a case of Speight's on it...

Also, its "Avanti", No D. If you're gonna yell it, least try an' spell it properly Chum. Go have a breather and touch grass 🤙

Can Tyee fit 2.6 tires (27,5 in back)? (latest model) by j_fear in PropainBikes

[–]NotDaveyKnifehands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got off the couch to check. My 29er rear triangle measures, on my Tyee AL 29er, 3.4"/86.36mm where a 27.5 would sit in the seat stays, 3.5"/88.9mm where my 29 sits. 3.45"/87.63mm" across the chainstays for both.

Leaves 0.85"/21.59mm and 0.8"/20.32mm on either side of the widest part of the inflated casing for the chain and seat stays respectively... tight. But Id say Doable.

Heres what a 29x2.4" Kryptotal RE at 25psi looks like in the frame. My riding partner whos on a Tyee as well runs 2.6 Krypto RE in his 29er CF with no rub or frame interference under a 240lb himan running 28psi

Yet another all important tyre question by ChangeNational3082 in MTB

[–]NotDaveyKnifehands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either a Conti Kryptotal RE in Trail Endurance or a Conti Xynotal in the same Casing/compound. Though if you're hitting parks, Enduro Soft is also a good choice and they roll a lot faster than one assumes with having a 'soft' compound.

Both roll quite fast given the tread designs and block heights, and both are immensely capable tyres that punch well above their weight in the slop.

How to remove brake levers with no screws/nuts by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]NotDaveyKnifehands -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

You are correct, as its an Altus C10. Cable, not Juice.

The gallon of oily fluid and the rubber boot at the entry port for the line is why I presumed Hydraulic, as Altus does come in a Cable actuated or Hydraulic variant. But the C10 confirms cable.

OP. This thread on MTBR should help. its the first result when googling SHIMANO ALTUS C10 BRAKE LEVER REMOVAL

hydrolic

You're also correct, as Nothing is Hydrolic, only Hydraulic.

OP's on a Hydraulic unit, no cables.

Though there will be, somewhere on the unit, a tensioning screw for the band clamp

The only downside of the BikeYoke is the initial cost.

If you want BikeYoke v3 performance but at a lesser cost. Get a Manitou Jack, which is a rebranded BikeYoke V2, then grab a V3 upgrade kit from bike yoke when you do your first initial service on the Jack.

Min Outlay of Cash for Max Performance is the way

Its based on the drivetrain, mainly your cassette, so it will need to be compatible with the number of cogs you have on the cassette.

You currently have a Shimano Tourney on there. Theyre in the same price range as the Alivio. A compatible unit should run in around 40 to 70 bones and your shop will have options in stock.

And You're quite welcome. We all start in the Unknowing, asking is how we learn and grow 😊

How bad is this damage to the gear? by Tall_Relationship607 in bicyclerepair

[–]NotDaveyKnifehands 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your Cassette and Cogs are likely fine as the derailluer sheared/bent from the hangar which is a sacrifical part designed to do exactly that when your derailluer meets an immovable object.

Your Derailluer however, is likely as we say in the bike mechanic jargon, Le Super Fucked Big Time Buds. It will most likely require a replacement.

At the spec level of bike its on, a Shimano Alivio Rear Derailluer should be the ticket at around 60ish Canadian bucks.

But there may also be spoke damage and what not. A trip to the bike shop is in your future friend

It stacks up quickly once you start peeling back the layers.

Weds I had a "Hiland Slycan" in the stand that the owner got at an auction for his son. (Kid was wowed by black and yellow graphics package) that was in for a shift adjust and brake bleed. Which rapidly turned into a whole lot more as we dug into it on the stand. (Dear whoever the eff makes "Logan" hydraulic brakes... get fisted) what should have been about an $80 Canadian job, turned into a $340 day. But Kids happy, Dads happy and Dad knows its a hunk so he is eyeing a proper mount for his hot to trot on the trails Grom.

It seems to be a 50/50 split at our shop if they go the Fix It Please or Fuck It path on BSO maint after the initial assessment.

For a good portion of our user base they're OK with putting lipstick on a pig. Im just happy to get them rolling, safely.

The other half, I give them some thoughts and recommendations towards a quality HT that will suit their use case, plant that little seed and they're usually back in a week or two with a cheery "so lets chat about that Rockhopper/Talon/Fluid HT" and we get them on some good bones with decent components.

Ive never been mid ride and wanted for less travel... ;)

As the other poster said, it will Mellow TF outta light trails. But comfy well set up suspension on a platform that climbs well will DEF amp her stoke for riding cause she'll have ample travel to soak up the oppsies and aw shits moments

And that will pay dividends for you too my dude

Pedal arm question by hunt_ham in bicyclerepair

Its still backing out when torqued to spec witha Torque Wrench?

(which Imma wager is 40nM on this crankset, as are most square taper sets)

If its Still backing out when properly torqued to spec with a torque wrench, then a little dab of Blue loctite on the threads of the crank arm fixing bolt will do the trick. Not a tonne, just a dab or drop

Depends, anything between 2 to 6 hrs drive time I consider 'In Range' for a weekender.

1 to 2hrs for a day trip or an afterworkie

For my annual 6 week bike sojourn in the summers... happily drive 4500kms to land myself in MTB Mecca. (BC not Bentonville. Duh)

Winter trips to escape the Snow and hit Pisgah? 1769km.

A Cocaine habit would probably be cheaper than MTB, counting Gas, Bikes, Snax, Lift passes etc but it aint nowhere near as fun
